Don't know how you just lose a step. It's not like Kareem Hunt has a ton of milage on that body of his. Maybe he's just not keeping himself in shape. Maybe the reason he remained unsigned for so long. I wish him the best! Welcome back.

Hunt is only 27, and still has a lot of tread on the tires. Guys usually don't start "losing a step" until they're well into their 30s.  He primarily was unsigned because the RB market tanked, and had (justifiably) a high asking price.

I think the team is going to ride Ford as the #1 unless he shows he isn't.  Either way, I could see a fairly even split in carries.

Let me do a nickers for you 'peen. Ford is mediocre. Sucks. Cheap backup to Chubb that was only going to see limited time. Has all the power of an e-bike. Take away his big run, he averaged 2.5 yards a carry against the Steelers.

  • Good on team Hunt & Kareem to get this deal done. Welcome back angry run 27 !  ?

sure, Hunt may have been slowed with a thigh, than ankle injury late in his contract year w/Browns.. but this looks like a fair deal to return home as a Brown healthy again. MKC reports he looked 10 lbs lighter staying in shape.

Good Luck Kareem Hunt & welcome back !

I am not comparing the two, rather simply to point out you can't take away runs.  If you took away long runs from Barry Sanders, he would be a pretty average back.

  • If I was Berry I wouldn’t be done yet. I would call Atlanta and get Cordelle Patterson.  He can get wide and use him as a returner.

It can't hurt to try that idea.  Even though there's 2 pretty good reasons named Robinson & Allgeier that he's now 3rd on Atlanta's depth chart - he's proven he can score from anywhere on the field as a Return Specialist, RB or WR.

If not, Jerome Ford rushed for 106 yards in his first opportunity with significant action.  Even so, that was only in about 2.5 quarters of action.  On that long run, he outran a lot of guys with good pursuit angles on him and the only way he was going to get caught - was a Safety that was already back deep diving/hoping that was a better option than what all others failed to do.

I can see Hunt and Ford giving us a Thunder and Lightning type of 1-2 punch.  Ford is still playing on a rookie salary cap restricted contract as a 2nd year player on a team with a salary cap that has to be about ready to suffocate in the very near future.

We might have cap problems, but we clear space this go around.

We will probably jettison Amari after this season.  We do have to hope at least one of Tillman or Moore balls out.  Wo do have a few vets like Bitonio we probably aren't going to extend any.

But at any rate, the loss of 1st rounders may start to hurt over the next few seasons.  Those are the guys that by year 3-4 have turned in to very good players.  On the flip side, berry has done a pretty good job with the 2nd through 4th round to get at least pretty good players, but it will be a good thing to start getting 1st rounders again after this next draft.

The key is that Watson gets his mojo back and starts playing.  If that doesn't happen, then we have problems because we are back to looking for a QB unless the rookie isn't just a mirage and actually turns in to a real deal player.  That said, we won't even think about moving from Watson for another 2 years.

Not only that, if anyone looked at that run and wasn't impressed - it's because they didn't want to be.  As that play began with Ford taking the handoff and heading to where the point of attack was supposed to be - he noticed the Right Side of the line was dominated again so he reversed his field and outran a lot of good pursuit angles the first 2 lines of defense had on him.  The TD saving tackle was made by a Safety in the back tier of defense that could only dive out in desperation hoping to grab an ankle or trip him up.  That was a pretty big play for Cleveland at a time when momentum was heavily favoring Pittsburgh.

I LIKE Hunt and I look forward to seeing the tandem he and Ford can be.  In fairness, both guys were here to be a change of pace to the best RB in football so contributing a 106 rushing yards in only 2.5 quarters of football is pretty good job by a guy that had very few opportunities (an no preseason) prior to it.

Since we don't have any other choice - we can at least give the guy a chance.

  • Never forget, the Kareem will rise to the top.

He very well might.  Ford might do the same.  Nobody knows at this point.  Heck, both might end up sucking ass.

Detroit wasn't any good during his tenure.  A breakaway run or two per game didn't help them much.  The rest of the time they punted.  I'd actually rather have the consistent yards that Chubb gave us over Sanders.  But that's just me.

I don't disagree, but just like Sanders, Chubb isn't playing football this season.  But no doubt that sanders had a lot of 1-2 yard carries.  You just had to keep handing him the ball, waiting for that 60 yard run.

Regarding the bold 'peen If Watson doesn't start playing at least 1\2 decently WERE SCREWED. To the tune of the $195 million guaranteed we'll still owe him to get him here. That contract is going to be a cap busting albatross if he flops.

Regarding Chubb- looks like that was a shades of Willis McGahee destruction of his knee. Just saw they're now talking two separate surgeries to repair it.  🙁

  • And McGahee's was while still in college...bowl game.  Nick has already had a serious injury to that knee.  I don't know how many times you can repair a knee, but it can't be unlimited.  Next year is Nicks last year on the contact.  If he is medically clear we can cut him or play him.  If not, we can IR him for the year and pay him around $12 mil or try to work out an injury settlement and release him.

Either way, I seriously doubt Nick plays for the Browns again.  Maybe not for anybody.  I was going to say probably, but didn't want to do that.

As for Watson, no doubt it is best if he starts playing like a top 10 QB.  If not, we took a shot and it didn't work out.  I wouldn't say it was a bad bet when we made it.  People may not have liked us signing him, but nobody can seriously say they ever doubted his skill level based on what he had done in the NFL before.

I do know that if we fire Berry or Stefanski, I doubt I renew my season tickets.  I might if we keep Schwartz and bring in a full spread O type coordinator.  Watson played it well at Clemson and in Houston.  If that is all he can play well, then we need to play him in that.

The two separate surgeries isn’t actually a bad thing. It’s separate for meniscus and separate to repair the ligaments. They seem to believe that repairing them separately is better for faster rehab. So not that they can’t do it in one, but that it’s actually better to do it separately.

  • I may be in the minority here, but I think Ford is the RB1 with Hunt repeating his RB2 role.  Hunt looked done last season.. because he likely is.

Ford was RB3 in his draft year.  He was an Alabama recruit who transferred to Cincy for more PT.. which should be to his positive because he has less wear on the wheels.

I just hope by the time he comes back it won't be too late.

This was to be his sixth NFL season, which means he might come back during his seventh, and probably wouldn't be, if he ever is, 100% until his eight NFL season.

    So frustrating. Sigh.

You might be correct on this, and I agree, I thought Hunt looked pedestrian last year. His yards per carry and yards per reception were both career-low.

Some thought he lost a step, but to me it looked like he literally was playing blind. I don't know how many times he'd take the handoff and run with his hair on fire right into one of his OLineman's backsides.

Yet I won't lie, I'm glad to see him back. I'm a damn sentimentalist, I suppose.

Just remember.. OJ Anderson wasn't fast and bull dozed his way to a championship with Bill Parcells.

  • Ottis Anderson, like Hunt, was all-pro his first season and it's all downhill from there.  Only 220#, he played for the Cardinals for 7.5 years before going to NYG mid-season 1986.. where he was a backup to Joe Morris until 1988.  Joe Morris, incidentally, ended his career in Cleveland as a 3.1 ypa backup in 1991.

Ottis was also 3.1 ypa basically every year in NY.  That super bowl year, Rodney Hampton was 4.2, Meggett was 7.5.. even ancient Phil Simms was above 4.0 when he scrambled.  Ottis somehow had a 3.5ypa that season but his entire time in NY [before and after] he was just a plugger backup.
