GOODYEAR, Arizona (WKBN) – The Cleveland Guardians have announced that relief pitcher Trevor Stephan will undergo reconstructive elbow surgery and is not expected to pitch again in 2024.

UPDATE ON * BAD NEWS *
According to a release from the team, the 28-year old experienced elbow soreness following a throwing session.
Further examination revealed the need for UCL reconstruction. The surgery will take place within the next two weeks.
According to a release from the team, the “collective hope is that by addressing this issue surgically, he will be able to return to his prior level of performance and durability.”
Stephan originally joined the Cleveland organization after being selected from the New York Yankees in the Rule 5 Draft in 2021.
In three seasons in Cleveland, the right-hander has posted a record of 16-13 with a 3.73 ERA. He has struck out 232 batters in 195 2/3 innings.

Antonetti told reporters on a Zoom call Thursday that right-hander ★ Gavin Williams would open the year on the injured list with a sore right elbow. Williams was scheduled to be one of Cleveland’s five starters, so a ★replacement has to be found.
He also announced that left-hander ★ Sam Hentges, a big part of the bullpen, was getting the middle finger on his left hand examined by a specialist. Antonetti said Hentges has experienced soreness and swelling in the finger
