SCOTUS Decisions June 2024
-
Lots of big decisions on the docket this month.
Government influence on social media - The case was brought up by Republican lawmakers who felt Big Tech had cracked down on opinions that did not go along with prevailing theory during COVID. SCOTUS declined to rule on this case over procedural grounds. I'm pretty disappointed in the decision because it's probably going to be another 10-15 years before a case like this gets brought to them again.
Gun rights - Two cases.
Case 1 - Trump's bump stock ban is deemed illegal. This one's good in my book. No need to punish the entire population because some retard uses one to shoot up a concert.
Case 2 - Violent felons have their 2nd amendment right rescinded. Need to keep an eye on this one as the affected group could easily be expanded from violent felons->felons->misdemeanors->wrongthink.Chevron Deference - Reagan era ruling gets overturned. As a result, government agencies, such as the EPA, can no longer be the determinants of what is or is not legal. This is now a function that belongs solely to the courts. I agree with the part of Kagan's dissent that this will "shock the legal system." The Chevron case has been cited over 18,000 times since its ruling in 1984. However, I don't buy that it will automatically mean we go back to a flaming Cuyahoga River. Experts in their respective fields can make their cases in court.
Homeless sleeping bans - Homeless can now be fined/jailed for sleeping in public places they aren't allowed to. This one went 6-3 along ideological lines. Ironically enough, one of the big supporters of this bill is Governor Gavin Newsom. As someone who personally can't stand getting accosted by the homeless and hates all the used needles and crime that they bring with them, I am a-okay with this. More of them probably need to be institutionalized in a mental hospital, but that's a discussion for another day.
Abortion pill - Case brought by pro-life groups to attempt to ban mifepristone was thrown out on procedural grounds and goes back to the lower courts. Women can continue to use it in Idaho.
Steve Bannon gets to go to jail - Moral of the story is don't act in contempt of court.

This has the potential to be my favorite, we'll see how it plays out.

Please, please Mr know it all.. Please, if you can find time during one of your endless flight gate waits. Please please enlighten those of us that have dealt with the homeless on a daily basis for years as to their root cause..
Someone seems a little testy this evening
I'm not sure what banning sleeping in public areas does to address homelessness
Medical debt leading to homelessness seems like a good place to start. How we can call ourselves the greatest county in the world when an illness can ruin your life financially is a joke.

Medical debt? WTF are you even talking about.

Well, this is huge!
In the Supreme Court's monumental decision in former President Trump's immunity case, one justice questioned whether Special Counsel Jack Smith – at the helm of Trump's unprecedented prosecution – was constitutionally appointed.

Regarding the homeless, l’m generally in favor of government being used as a function to reduce desperation in the populace.
In what ways?
In what ways?
I’m not sure l can super succinctly answer, but basically support programs to help people identify their cause of homelessness, and help them help themselves to be homeful again. I’m realizing homeful isn’t a word. Why isn’t there an opposite word to homeless?
There’s obviously various causes of homelessness. Addiction, divorce/break ups, guy with a high paying job loses his job, old person outlives their reverse mortgage, etc. And there are programs in place to address these things, some of which aren’t even government programs. AA is a fiercely independent organization and does some of the best work in addiction.
If homelessness is a growing concern, then it’s fair to say the demand is outweighing the supply for these programs right now. This is why we have the government, to address growing concerns like that.

I don’t know who this is, but you’ll appreciate it instantly reminded me of this.
Easily one of Zappa’s biggest barnburners. It shreds. You gotta wait over a minute to hear any glockenspiel at all. That's Special counsel Jack Smith.. His case just went up in flames and yes.. I'm a huge Zappa fan... Studied his music for years... I saw the quote on twitter so I made a meme.. I caught the zappa quote immediately...

This graph more or less tells the story. I'm not implying that a mental hospital in the 1950s was a Ritz-Carlton, but maybe we need to think about bringing them back and updating them to be more humane.

Some thoughts on the Trump immunity case.
1 - It sets a new legal precedent for presidential immunity that has never existed before. It could certainly be abused, and the dissenting judges are absolutely correct on that mark.
2 - It's unfortunately a necessary response to the DC establishment's waging of lawfare against a wrecking ball like Trump with frivolous, retarded cases that would never be brought up against anyone else. The good part about this ruling is that it prevents any conniving GOP appointed judges from going after Biden with frivolous retarded cases after he is out of office. The tit-for-tat shit needs to stop. -

The President can still be prosecuted for crimes.
2. Along the lines of what you said, there has never been a case like this against any former President and there has never been a cause to define immunity.
The immunity clause is something I always thought existed anyways. It's sad to see at least one justice turn around and fear monger the extremes though.

I think a big start to helping homelessness, is what Vapor said, mental help/institutions but also combating drugs/addictions.
I don't think either is any small feat.
