my Must Win Games philosophy
-
1) You've got to at least split the games with division rivals. (Steelers at home will be a short week of 4 days...and on the road 6 days)
2) Beat the teams that you're supposed to beat. (my 'stretch' here is beating Denver in Denver)
3) Play 50/50 with everyone else.
If you can do that, then you should make the playoffs. If you can't do points 1 & 2...then you're probably not playoff caliber. Go Browns!

Interesting! I'm gonna come at this like this is a team that wants to improve upon 11 wins from last year. Consequently, I have to take your 8 must wins and add some Performance Enhancing Drugs like Viagra or Ecstasy or Psychedelics. Yes, listen to your buddy Flugel and watch your football wood factor go from balsa to sequoia. Let's put our game faces on; and giddy-up and get after it.
Adding to your 8 must wins above, I think that game in New Orleans is definitely one this team should and must win. Their offensive line isn't very good; which should feed right into our strength. It's also indoors so maybe we catch the passes in the end zone that touch our hands this time against them. That gets this team to 9 must wins. Next? Jerry Jones and his product think they're gonna mount their running game horses (on the worn, torn and tired bodies of Zeke Elliott and Dalvin Cook) to leave Camelot and run it down the Browns esophagus? Who says Cee Dee Lamb can't get a soft tissue injury from the long holdout? This is very much a "must win" to bring the inventory of those to 10. Next, this team can matchup with the Eagles to get us to 11 must wins. Meatball on spaghetti, how much does a warm weather pampered Miami want to come play in sub zero wind chills off Lake Erie on December 29th? This isn't the 2022 Browns - it's the one in the process of building upon the success of 2023.
Adding to your 8 must wins above, I think that game in New Orleans
I thought about the Saints. It's certainly an attainable win and it would be disappointing if we left there with a loss.
Dallas was 12-6 last year. We're notoriously bad in season openers. And Watson hasn't played at all yet. I'm just not feelin' it for that game. As for the Eagles, they had 11 wins last year. I don't see us being the much better team (or us being favored to win by much, if at all). As for Miami coming up on 12/29...well, you referenced the game where the Saints came up to play us in one of the top dozen coldest football games ever. And their offense was a crippled offense...running the wild cat a substantial percentage of the time. And we lost to them. I no longer consider our Cold Weather Games to be a home field advantage against anyone.
I think with Watson not playing at all in preseason, and with Chubb unable to play, our offense is going to struggle in the early games until Watson and the offense settle in.
Obviously this is a BIG year for Watson. If he doesn't get his ass in gear and show that he's a QB to be reckoned with, then, I reckon we'll be looking to make a change. DTR? A draft pick? Who knows.
Of course, I hope you are right Flugel!

Good points! If Jack Conklin and Dawand Jones stay healthy - I can really see this team taking the next step. That's 40% of the offensive line which opens up a lot of places to run the ball that we needed to avoid last year. That'll make our running game a lot less predictable. We can't ask for better run blockers than Conklin and Jones - although we do have to hope they can both stay healthy this time around.
We'll find out real soon my man...
-
I'm thinking they're going to have to sweep one of the AFCN opponents.
I'd also put the Jags in the must-win column in addition to Flugel's suggestion for the Saints.
The AFCE could be pretty competitive come late December. The Dolphins game will probably be pretty important for both team's playoff chances.
It's the hardest schedule in the NFL. Every week is going to be a dog fight and every win is going to be earned.
-
I totally agree on winning at least 4 division games, but the cruel irony is the dreaded Steelers were 5-1 vs the AFC North last season and finished 3rd. Weird.
I always say protect your home turf (6-2 at a minimum), and at least split on the road. In my pee-brain, that should be good enough for a playoff season.
I'm an eternal optimist, but I have no clue how this will pan out. I'm really concerned about our running game, while Watson has much to prove.
GO BROWNS
-
I did that at one time, but it's too complicated.
Just stack wins and limit losing. If you do that you will find yourself in a good spot. I mean, what are good games to lose?

Well said! Not only that, if you have been a fan of this team for a long time - you learn to worry more about the games the Browns are supposed to win more than the ones they are supposed to lose.
-
This is a pile of Opossum Jism
If the Browns win all these jackoff "must wins" They would lose 8 games and most likely miss the playoffs.
So then, the games you didn't place importance on, in essence are the "must wins".
CONVERSELY.....If the Browns won all the NON MUST WINS, they would only need to win 3 or 4 of your NINE must wins to get into the playoffs.
So, you see how idiotic your mental masturbation fantasy about must win games is?
I realize that it is football season and people love to talk about football, but for the love of naked Nigerians, you guys need to stop with all this asshole statistics and analytical nonsense.
The only game that is a must win, is the game a team is engaged in.

Every year I look at the games that we 'should win', and play 50/50 with everyone else. For MANY years there weren't too many games that we 'should win' with absolutely no chance of playing 50/50 with the rest. Recent years have been different however. Our season is not over after this loss. Nor next week's.

The season is not over? LMAO, buddy, are you out of your fucking mind?
I have never run a football team, but I have taken charge of work forces in my life, and I can tell you first hand what is wrong with the Browns.
It has nothing to do with football, talent, play calling or analytics. There is no "regrouping" or fixing things during the week here.
For as long as we can remember, the Browns V 2.0 have made and continue to male penalties, drop balls, miss blocks and tackles.
The reason for this is because the team does not have a head coach. It does not have a leader. It flounders just like a child in a fatherless house flounders. There is nobody in Cleveland at which the buck stops. You can say whatever the fuck you want to say, but Kevin Stefanski is not the mother fucking head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
His players continue to be lackadaisical because they see what happens within the organization. They see that he constantly has his strings pulled by a puppet master. Bill Cowher, Bill Parcells, Vince Lombardi, or Bill Belichick would never tolerate this kind of shit football week after week, year after year. Until Haslam has a head coach that is the very highest executive on the franchise he is never going to have a winner
Until the Browns head coach is the guy where the buck stops, this ridiculous bullshit will continue.
Whether it is a corporate team, a Girl Scout cookie selling team, or a sports team, if there is not a father figure if there is not a badass at the top of the totem pole, there will never be success. There is no fucking way anybody can take a look at Kevin Stefanski and say to themselves boy this guy is really in charge.

I completely agree with your angle. I disagree that Stefanski can't be the man. I believe he needs to step up and be the man.
You didn't use the word so I don't want to put it in your mouth. I believe players see micromanagement. The players are smart enough, or should be smart enough, to know that when a man is hired for a job he needs to be trusted to do the job. And lack of trust in any team or organization is disastrous.
I believe ownership oversteps their bounds and meddles. I believe analytics department (Depo) oversteps his bounds and meddles. There are analtyics to football but they are not related to the sabermetrics(matrices) of baseball.
A room full of alphas want to be able to look to the front of the room to the big dog alpha, the head coach, and know that he's not being manipulated by the FO and ownership. And I agree, they see the manipulation.

Thanks for the response, brother. I in turn, disagree with you.
A person doesn't just decide one day to be a leader. A man is either an alpha or a beta.
Many here get mad at my insistance that DePodesta calls the plays and runs the team, however, Grossi reported at the time that Stefanski was willing to give up some of a head coach's responsibilities in order to get the job.
That in itself eliminated him as the right guy. Can you imagine Cowher, Belichik, Lombardi, Madden, or Brown accepting such a job?
Stefanski is not a leader. He is a weak man. There is no magic that can all of a sudden give him balls.
Many here also cry out, "what can he do, he is not the owner?" These are people, no disrespect, who have spent their lives revering the rules, cowtowing to management, and biting their tongue in order to save their job.
The world needs drones; worker bees, if you will. However, worker bees don't become billionaires. Worker bees don't change the world.
People who achieve great things are largely ego maniacal, self-centered, intolerable pricks who don't.give a shit to hear anything other than what they believe in.
Haslam is a weak man. He is a buffoon. He is buffaloed by an analytical egghead who have never won a fucking thing in his life.
Again, there are only two possibilities.
1) Stefanski is a horrible head coach.
2) Stefa ski does not have the balls to risk his job, put Haslam in his place, and stop watching his team and fans be humiliated and embarrassed.
Either way, Stefanski is a loser.
The only reason he has a job is because management fears it will be too hard to find another coffee fetcher.
Stefanski is a coffee fetcher.

Think about Bernie Kosar. Approaching 70, battered and worn out. Yet, if Stefanski asked him to start, he would.
That is the spirit the Browns were built on. Haslam has no earthly.concept.of this.

Wrong. The HC and GM have to work as a team. But when it comes right down it, they each have to stay in their lane.
