Today was fun again and for me, the win couldn't have come against a better team.
As much fun as I was having I kept thinking about Kevin's quote "Watson gives us the best chance to win" and I said several "Fuck you Kev" out loud.
Hopefully JOK is not injured too bad as that looked pretty damn scary the way his neck extended on impact.
I've had a good run the last 3 sporting events (games 1 & 2 World Series and today) so that means it's time to pay the reaper for me, so put all your money on a Skankees comeback.

You were way smarter than I was my man! There's certainly nothing wrong with that!

I just heard on TV that a medical update on JOK and Ward will be released this afternoon.

If some are going claim that Haslam meddles, then he was the one to mandate that Dorsey be given the chance to run his O and call the plays, and told Kevin to play Winston.
It only makes sense, right?
Maybe. It seemed to me Kevin was married to Watson. Once #4 was done - Kevin seemed to give up play calling. This could be because Kevin and Watson had a more conservative gameplan where as Dorsey and Winston are more risk takers.
Either way Kevin deserves 100% blame for how the season started. Even if higher ups demanded #4 to play, Kevin should have grown a pair and made the right decision. It was obvious to everyone #4 was not getting it done.

We will get the story of who's deciding what in Berea sometime in the future I imagine, similar to how we were blessed with all the Hue Jackson drama after the fact.
Kevin himself is not a conservative playcaller - him giving it up is most likely because they were 1-6 and they wanted to do something to show fans they are open to change, you could say he was forced to call games conservative because:
a) The OL was playing like swiss cheese and the running game was lackluster, both are better with the return of Teller, Conklin, Pocic, and Chubb
b) His QB couldn't go through progressions, navigate a pocket, or throw it with any semblance of accuracy, velocity, or anticipation past 10 yards.
Regardless of (a) I am a pure Watson hater though, no matter what people say about "oh Watson just had a bad OL and now they're healthy", the metrics show the receivers were doing very well at creating separation. And it's quite obvious on the tape that there's many open guys he didn't throw to or even look at - and there's plenty of evidence now since Moore, Jeudy, and TIllman actually exist for the first time all season. Similar to how guys suddenly existed when Flacco took over.
---
Why did they make DTR the backup though against the bungles, that is a question they should answer.
Winston is an NFL talent without the brain (historically), he played well for the Saints before his injuries. I'm not convinced he fixed his turnover problem given that Hamilton dropped the easiest game sealing INT of all time right before Winston threw a perfect TD to Tillman.
But I mean I would take 30/30 TD/INT over the lowest scoring offense in the NFL, worst 3rd down conversion percentage in the NFL, most 3 and outs in the NFL. Just let it fly, score some points, convert some downs..

Cleveland.com first half? Try one drive. I couldn't believe my eyes.. Night and day. So this is what 1\2 competent QB play looks like? Mad after a win? Well yes, because Watson should have been sat down 3 weeks ago, while the season was still salvageable.
Whoever was responsible for trotting that bum out there when he was looking like a BAD third string QB should be fired. You can wipe that egg off of your face Kev if you think I was dumb enough to believe Watson gives us the best chance to win.
Yeah it's just one game, but damn, Winston wasn't dancing around there taking sacks because he couldn't figure out who was open. Our game winning TD? Care to bet Watson would have thrown it in the seats?

The line played its best ball all year. We were about as healthy as we’ve ever been too. We had some long developing play action passes where we gave Winston plenty of time - reminded you of the great run by Flacco last year. Winston could have had three turnovers too. He only had one.
Ball Placement was much better with Winston. And when pressure was in his face he was still surveying the field. Watson especially this season has fallen into the habit of head down stagger around in the pocket when he feels the slightest pressure.
-
And just like that, the team is watchable again. I thank god every day for destroying Watson's achilles, because our front office certainly was not going to bench him.
-
Regardless of what happens, Jameis is going to be entertaining

I'm just disgusted that stupidanski insisted that watson gave the the Browns the best chance of winning.
The Btowns deserve a better head coach. One that isn't an incompetent wuss.

Well the Steelers offense has crashed back down to earth...
Tied at 9 with the New York Football Giants.
Wait... the Steelers just ran back a punt for a TD.
16-9.

Steeler (and refs) won a close game. I had to stop watching after all the flags.
Daboll actually pulled a smart one

Kind of like how Oregon intentionally put 12 men on the field so time would elapse during the end of their game against Ohio State. Rule change happened immediately after

Hey just out of curiosity, after 1994 - how many times have the Browns won 11 regular season games?
It's 30 years later and they've done it twice in 2020 and 2023 with the same Head Coach. Is he really the Big Bad Wolf?

That's a great point but I don't think it excuses him from the shit show that was the beginning of this season.
2 things were painfully obvious.
1 Watson needed to be benched.
2 the team as a whole needed more focus to eliminate stupid penalties.
I think clock management was bad too but can't remember.
Those fall on Kevin. He only made the changes because he was forced to. I'm not saying he should be fired but his ass should have a little heat on it.

I agree Watson needed to be benched. Tell you what, I sure got the impression he had a lot more fun calling the plays when Flacco was directing the offense last year. Did he make the call to not re-sign Flacco or the FO (which probably needs the 2 thumbs up from the owner).
It was awesome to see our best 5 OL starting for the 1st time together. The flags seemed less frequent - although the guy rejoining the group (Teller) had a couple penalties. Some guys are getting healthier to be more efficient in that group as well.
Just my opinion (and it could be wrong), the financial commitment made to Watson (and traded away picks) was done by Owner and FO - so I doubt Stefansk would have the absolute power here to just say "hey I'm benching your idea of football savior at QB and myself as play caller."

It’s a tricky scenario in general, one that upper leadership put Stefanski in.
Watson beat the ravens last year before blowing out his shoulder, we all said he looked good and the season was over RIP - then Flacco happened. So it made sense they had some confidence in him going into week 1.
If Stefanski benches Watson for Winston and dark jameis comes out and throws his 4 INTs - then they switch to DTR who lobs ducks to center field, he’d be in hot water for benching Watson in the first place who sucks but had other excuses like the OL and no running game. Winston is the QB who has historically come out and thrown 400 yards and 4TDs one week, and 180 yards and 4 INT the next week.
I fully supported benching Watson during and after the giants game, but I understand the politics involved - definitely should blame the owner and FO for putting the coach in that situation even if he signed off on Watson he isn’t ultimately responsible for personnel decisions.
Stefanski can be criticized like anybody, especially maybe for the mind boggling failure of putting DTR as QB2 when Winston is obviously more NFL capable. But he is nowhere close to the hot seat.

To Stefanski’s credit…when he was calling plays…it is a difficult job when you have two incompetent bookend tackles, bad QB play, your top running back out, your #1 WR pissed off and your Guard and Center in and out of the lineup. So those shouting for discipline and focus under the conditions above - good luck.
