So, I'm reading that people actually want us to suck for a year or two more.  Because the QB grass will be greener in a year or two.  That's nice.  In the meantime, can you give me the winning lottery numbers?

What makes anyone think that we will be the only team in contention to draft a QB next year...or the year after?

4 more moths before we find out what we do.....

It's the Browns.  I'm sure they'll draft a stud LT, shore up the offensive line, get an amazing kicker, and a stud punt/kick returner.  We can still watch putrid football but we'll be able to brag to all our friends about how we have the best O line in the league.

What we should do is reach for a QB at #2 overall, watch him get his brains beat in, develop horrible habits, then move off him in a few years and have to go and get ANOTHER QB.

    That would be tits.

But as long as YOU are entertained.

The one with Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, etc?

Much higher than this current one.

Hell yeah. That's what I'm talking about. Tim Couch era again.

I'll take Lamar, his 1 playoff win, and several real bad exits over whatever this product we're watching is.

I'm on board with giving up the pick and waiting until we draft again at #1 in 2 years for the perfect QB - Arch Manning.

He could very well declare after next season - so for the 2026 Draft. Next season will be his third college season.

And you aren't the first person I've heard/read talk about tanking for Arch Manning, but he's had all of 95 college passes so far. Great genes, though.

If he’s great and wants to come out next season - does the Manning family want him in Cleveland.  Does the family pull Eli Part 2?

I hear you.  We had Joe Thomas and Alex Mack blocking for guys that should have been Insurance agents (and nothing against the career/profession insert what you like).  We had seasons where we NEEDED a position and we picked in the Top 10 (2020).  But We benefited from some 1st/2nd round type talent on our Oline when we made a couple of playoff runs.

I can’t see a Reach again for a major need but I can see a bandaid next year and developmental guy too (DTR ain’t it).   If the stars align maybe it is Cousins or some other heady pocket passer type that has some battle scars and experience.

My order of preference when you stink and pick this high.  1. Franchise QB 2. A freak pass rusher or 3. Multi Pro Bowl LT.   I feel like 1 and 2 impact the game the most.

If the QB at #2 is worth taking then we should take him.  But I wouldn't advise throwing him in there as the starter.  We have Watson that we can feed to the wolves and let the new guy live and learn.  Not sure if Watson will be ready though...so we bring back someone like Brissette.

Now, if they decide that the QB available is not worth having on your team (and that's the decision you'd be making because he won't be there at the top of round 2...or even later in the round because the Raiders or the Giants or somebody will draft him) then you take the BPA or trade out.  Then try to get somebody like (Jeff) Beck and see if you can develop him into a good starter.

The scenario may become clearer after the FA frenzy.  If we don't bring in a sought after veteran then that'll be a tip-off as to what may happen in the draft.  We'll learn more about the quality of the QB's as the months trickle by.

I remember him, he also wanted us to pick up Greg Roman and run an option heavy offense.

Obviously it's had great NFL success regular season.  Until you realize that Lamar has one playoff win, and several *real* bad exits including first round bounces his first two years.

He's Exhibit 1 for what I've said for years:

At the end of the day, for a QB to have the ultimate success, he has to learn how to win from the pocket. To be able to stand back there, make his reads and go through his progressions.

Lamar Jackson has been a phenomenal regular season QB.

This might be his best chance.  Here's his passing stats below and then what Henry can do on the ground.

1 problem!  KC has Mahomes + Spagnola's Defense at home in cold winter temperatures.  When all things are equal I'd put my cake on the one playing the better defense.

  • Understanding TB lost 5 of the 6 games that Mike Evans missed - maybe all Lamar needed was a WR like that.  If they didn't always hand MVPs to QBs I could see Barkley & Evans being serious contenders.  Even Crablegs threw 33 TD passes in TB but 30 INTs the same season put a damper on celebrating those.

Mike Evans might be the quietest super star with 11 consecutive seasons exceeding 1000 yards along with his countless TD receptions.  He does wonderful things for QBs especially when you consider Johnny Manziel has a Heisman Trophy.

Great points! Poor Joe Thomas played 10 years and never had a good enough QB to even get them to the playoffs.  The closest he came was in 2007 when the Browns had a 10-6 record.  DA's Cinderella story had an early midnight so there were no playoffs.

I like your order of preference. That said, if we invest a #2 overall pick on a QB - I think we have to prioritize his blind side protection at the top of round 2 (round 3 might not be immediate impact at LT).  Then, I'd go after edge rush and DT.

I wouldn't say it isn't good.  There just aren't any QB's that rate high enough to push them up to the top of the 1st round.

I'd trade back just enough  to still take one of our top 5 non QBs on the board.  I'd take Jackson Dart if he is there at #2.

No doubt we need a QB, but we can't keep chasing qb's.  That is what got us in to this position.  Set the board, then stay true to the board.

I don't know, there's seems to be a general consensus that Sanders and Ward are definitely a notch below the three guys at the top of the draft in 2023 - Williams, Daniels and Maye.

Then the bottom kind of falls out of the QB class.

Like Garrett Bush said in the video I shared, if the Browns decide they aren't going to take Sanders or Ward, target four or five guys and trade down, and you are guaranteed one of them. Hopefully Ward gets taken first, and the Giants, Raiders and Jets start a bidding war for our #2 overall.

I see the confusion here...my fault...Jackson dart would be drafted by us in the 2nd round, not #2.

Another thing that is disgusting - the amount of all 22 on Shadeur vs about any other QB.

I'm trying to get through, at minimum, 6-8 games of each.   Sanders was easy to dig up.  Cam? Not so much.

For anyone wanted to jump in and talk some football, possibly follow along with my eval while I take a break from writing about the Browns season, you're more than welcomed too.

How many QBs do you think you'll evaluate?

I'd love to see your thoughts on why Beck regressed (his roster definitely was not as good as 2023), why Kyle McCord is still so low in the rankings, what other QBs you think would be worth a mid-round pick.

Re: McCord. Took a dive into his year at 'Cuse.  I remember his 2023 quite well so that was unnecessary.

The big issue with his ranking will be his throwing and footwork mechanics.  I've mentioned that both him and Cam need a lot of work.  His release makes his arm almost flat at times and the ball comes out lower than it should.  It's a high risk for balls getting batted down, but it's worse when you combine his windmill windup.

His initial windup mechanics before the hand crosses his shoulder reminds me a bit of Tim Tebow. That isn't a good thing because it nukes down field accuracy and makes back shoulder throws that much harder on the WR to adjust.

His footwork, driving through his delivery, with his trail leg coming up reminds me of another Buckeye QB from back in in the day - Todd Boeckman.

I remember this bomb to Robo and asking myself why his trail leg came up SO far.  The drive through was just odd.

    At 2:07

At 1:20... McCord does that alot as well.

These things are going to hinder him in the NFL a ton.  Plus he still has a high penchant for turnovers when coming off his primary. I don't believe Kyle processes at an NFL level at the moment.  None that would justify him climbing rankings.

Thanks for sharing that and for the accurate analysis!  The stats shown on the video were before his 13th and final game. This is what he ended up with per ESPN ... 2024 season stats. YDS. 4,779. TD. 34. INT. 12. QBR. 78.6. 13th. While that set the single season record in the ACC - like you said previously the competition faced wasn't all that good. The QBR has him ranked 13th and the competition might dilute that even more so this would be a 4th - 7th round pick in a trade-back scenario for more early picks where we also added a FA vet like Cousins. My guess a 5th round pick for someone?

A lot of what Joel Klatt (former Colorado QB/Commentator) had to say about McCord was how frequently he likes to use the back shoulder throws that he and his receivers are consistently on the same page with.  Not against Pitt though they prepared for the back shoulder tosses they intercepted 5 times and a few were pick 6s. That said he only had 7 INTs throughout the other 12 games which ain't bad. Some of that is lesser competition but some of it better pre-snap decisiveness than he had as a Buckeye.  IMO, that was where he improved most in the 4 games I saw.

An earlier mid round QB growing on me would be Will Howard.  But again, I'm not a QB expert - just a fan...

  • I read somewhere the Browns are going QB with pick #2. But that may just be a ploy to bump up the price in a trade up from someone else just as needy. My opinion is that no one is more QB needy anywhere than the Browns. Right now we don't even have a middling college level QB other than Winston.

  • I don't think Deion's punk kid or Ward is going to be the answer - I'd like to see us trade back out of the #2 spot and take a QB to develop later on. Someone will make the call - Giants, Jets, Raiders to get into the top 2.

I've asked this question to Buckeye fans before and still haven't received an answer.

Is Will Howard any better than Cardale Jones or J.T. Barrett?

And if not, then what makes him a 'mid round pick'...?

  • I don't think Deion's punk kid or Ward is going to be the answer - I'd like to see us trade back out of the #2 spot and take a QB to develop later on. Someone will make the call - Giants, Jets, Raiders to get into the top 2.

Yes.  Because they need a QB.  Which is different from us I guess.
