How many QBs do you think you'll evaluate?
I'd love to see your thoughts on why Beck regressed (his roster definitely was not as good as 2023), why Kyle McCord is still so low in the rankings, what other QBs you think would be worth a mid-round pick.
Re: McCord. Took a dive into his year at 'Cuse. I remember his 2023 quite well so that was unnecessary.
The big issue with his ranking will be his throwing and footwork mechanics. I've mentioned that both him and Cam need a lot of work. His release makes his arm almost flat at times and the ball comes out lower than it should. It's a high risk for balls getting batted down, but it's worse when you combine his windmill windup.
His initial windup mechanics before the hand crosses his shoulder reminds me a bit of Tim Tebow. That isn't a good thing because it nukes down field accuracy and makes back shoulder throws that much harder on the WR to adjust.
His footwork, driving through his delivery, with his trail leg coming up reminds me of another Buckeye QB from back in in the day - Todd Boeckman.
I remember this bomb to Robo and asking myself why his trail leg came up SO far. The drive through was just odd.
At 2:07
At 1:20... McCord does that alot as well.
These things are going to hinder him in the NFL a ton. Plus he still has a high penchant for turnovers when coming off his primary. I don't believe Kyle processes at an NFL level at the moment. None that would justify him climbing rankings.

And that is precisely why he is high on the Browns list. He is a lesser threat to Watson the Great

Thanks for sharing that and for the accurate analysis! The stats shown on the video were before his 13th and final game. This is what he ended up with per ESPN ... 2024 season stats. YDS. 4,779. TD. 34. INT. 12. QBR. 78.6. 13th. While that set the single season record in the ACC - like you said previously the competition faced wasn't all that good. The QBR has him ranked 13th and the competition might dilute that even more so this would be a 4th - 7th round pick in a trade-back scenario for more early picks where we also added a FA vet like Cousins. My guess a 5th round pick for someone?
A lot of what Joel Klatt (former Colorado QB/Commentator) had to say about McCord was how frequently he likes to use the back shoulder throws that he and his receivers are consistently on the same page with. Not against Pitt though they prepared for the back shoulder tosses they intercepted 5 times and a few were pick 6s. That said he only had 7 INTs throughout the other 12 games which ain't bad. Some of that is lesser competition but some of it better pre-snap decisiveness than he had as a Buckeye. IMO, that was where he improved most in the 4 games I saw.
An earlier mid round QB growing on me would be Will Howard. But again, I'm not a QB expert - just a fan...
-
I read somewhere the Browns are going QB with pick #2. But that may just be a ploy to bump up the price in a trade up from someone else just as needy. My opinion is that no one is more QB needy anywhere than the Browns. Right now we don't even have a middling college level QB other than Winston.
-
I don't think Deion's punk kid or Ward is going to be the answer - I'd like to see us trade back out of the #2 spot and take a QB to develop later on. Someone will make the call - Giants, Jets, Raiders to get into the top 2.

I've asked this question to Buckeye fans before and still haven't received an answer.
Is Will Howard any better than Cardale Jones or J.T. Barrett?
And if not, then what makes him a 'mid round pick'...?

Yes. Because they need a QB. Which is different from us I guess.

We need one. Ward and Sanders aren't worth a top 2 pick. In a non-crappy QB class year, Ward would be a mid to late first round pick and Sanders in the late first/second round.
I feel the same way. But if, for some reason, every other team feels the same way, is either worth the first pick of the Second Round?
Assuming the Browns hold onto that pick.

At #33 if both were there, I'd draft Ward but not Sanders. But I'd say there is no chance either one makes it to round 2.

Couldn't tell you. What made Vince Young, Anthony Richardson, Tim Tebow and Brady Quinn 1st round picks?
Not that this means anything - he's moved up Kiper's list to the 7th ranked QB.
Cardale Jones was a fill-in starter. Great athlete but my guess is outside of a couple BCS Games or so - he was too inconsistent to trust as the fulltime starter longer term.

Sorry, but that's the price you pay for a QB. Feel free to kick the can down the road and not pick one.

Kurtis Roarke is the QB l like as a mid round guy to get. Tall pocket passer type guy who had a heckuva season for IU. Any thoughts on him?

Will seems to have the requisite size (two inches on JT) and I always thought while Barrett wasn’t a shrimp he didn’t stand tall in the pocket. Both had/have leadership qualities you look for in a QB.
Cardale was always a wildcard as a prospect he had 11 starts in college. And he had his infamous line where you wondered is this guy going to study and digest a playbook and run an NFL offense?
Probably an imperfect comparison on both fronts.

And he played with a bad knee all year too (torn ACL) He stood out watching MACtion games last year. Seems like he could have a longish career at the next level.

Yeah l watch some MACtion myself. Go Redhawks! I like that he made the jump to the Big 10 and found success there. Makes me think he could make the jump to the NFL and do ok.

I was watching today's Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show and they brought up something I hadn't thought of:
Greg Newsome and Martin Emerson are both on their last year of their rookie contracts in 2025. Denzel Ward will be entering his eighth season.
And we know Berry likes him some defensive backs.

I know there's a really good CB at the top of the draft but If we're not going to pick a QB, we had better do something about LT. Unless they're planning on putting Dewan Jones over there. Even so, a tackle and a guard somewhere is needed.

This may have been a little rhetorical on your part, but some might need a refresher...
Vince Young - 6'5" 240; the first FBS Player to throw for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a season; was romanticized by the 2006 Rose Bowl - considered one of greatest CFB Games of all-time.
In reality, he was 2006 Offensive Rookie of the Year, and was 30-17 as a starter in TN and quietly had the best NFL career of the quartet.
Anthony Richardson - 6'4" 240; a complete specimen that passes the eye test and duped a drug addict (Jim Irsay) and the NFL's luckiest GM (Chris Ballard) into thinking he was ready for Sundays after only 13 College starts.
Tim Tebow - 6'3" 250; two-time National Champion, at the time, considered to be one of if not the greatest CFB Player of all-time.
Brady Quinn - 6'4" 235; Maxwell Award winner, 37 TDs & 7 INTs as a Senior at ND.
The first three were/are FREAK athletes that could play QB. They relied on their legs in College; can't do that in the NFL. I stand by the belief that most athletic QBs eventually get figured out by DCs and it's game over.
Brady Quinn was the most traditional QB of the bunch. His arrested development in the NFL was probably due to some ineptness in the FO and the the revolving door at HC (I know, shocking for the Browns).

All the players you listed had some sort of elite physical talents. Brady at least played in an offense similar to what the Patriots ran at the time. So that 'pro-minded' appeal was there.
Even though there were things he struggled with that were made clear as early as the 2005 bowl season.

I suppose my point is made for me. JT produced as much as Howard despite being 6'2. So we're essentially pointing at Will being 6'4 and on a national championship team as the reasons. That would historically value him as a 5th rounder.
Kurtis Roarke is the QB l like as a mid round guy to get. Tall pocket passer type guy who had a heckuva season for IU. Any thoughts on him?
He's on my list, will get back to you. I'm shooting for write-ups on the top 8.

I'm not disputing any of that. My reply of questions pertaining to Tia's question of what makes Will Howard a mid round prospect when Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett were not. 32 NFL Teams deemed they weren't and who knows - they may also think the same way about Will Howard. We're just having some fun spit balling as fans.
The Browns ended up looking like the only team thinking Brady Quinn was worth trading back up into the back end of round 1 for. What made Quinn the alleged most pro ready QB in his class according to many scouts and draft analysts when he locked onto the 6'5" Jeff Samardzija seemingly 90% of the time besides 27 TD catches in a 2 year stretch? While that looked impressive - it formed a bad habit he perfected and leaned on. It looked like a hard habit for a young prospect like him to break at the next level. The Browns learned this guy didn't have the pre-snap vision that helped to expedite/speed read the progressions at the NFL level. End result? After not being able to beat out journey man DA - he went to Denver to be Tim Tebow's caddy on game day.
