Exactly, draft a DE to replace him and he can sit out if he wants. The FO obligation is to the team not his whims.

You won't be able to replace Myles.  He's a 1st ballot HOF'er.  You can get somebody else to play the position, but two TE's won't be following that guy across the formation pre-snap.

He turns 30 at the end of next season. He's battled through injuries the last two seasons.

There's part of me that wouldn't be surprised if he's one of those rare guys announcers constantly refer to as "ageless" because he's still dominant at 35 years old, there's another part of me that wonders if he's never going to have more value than now. How much longer will Myles stay at the level he's at today?

You're right, the Browns aren't trading him and replacing him most likely with a first-ballot Hall of Famer. But they could replace him with someone who in 2027 is better than he is.

Totally agree, even a world class athlete needs time to recover, despite the modern medicine rehab.

He may never return to former form but will definitely get a chance to try. I hope it's here.

Just look at Edgerrin James post injury. Was still a great back.

James tore his ACL at age 23.

Chubb tore his MCL, PCL, and LCL, as well as dislocated his knee cap in college.  Then at age 28 tore his ACL and MCL.

The possibilities are intriguing. The big problem is I don't see much chance of trading Myles this year before the draft.  Maybe June 1 at the earliest.  The reality is it will probably have to be a June 1 cut next year. The anchor of the Watson situation along with some other contracts that had money pushed forward have us in a tight spot.

It was at least on paper manageable the next 2 years. This Myles situation has thrown a monkey wrench in to that plan.

The Browns are not required to trade him, so the monkey wrench really plays out against Myles alone.

    I understand that.

In a perfect situation we could trade him without having to gut some other positions. Myles has made it clear to everybody he doesn't want to play here.  He doesn't believe in the FO or his teammates.  That being the case, I don't want the guy here.  I see more negative than positive.  It's not like he accounted for a lot of wins last season.  In fairness to him, it is hard to attribute wins to any defensive player.

I also agree on the leverage angle.  The only real leverage he has is he doesn't have to agree with signing an extension with any team where he might be traded.  As an example he wouldn't sign an extension if we traded him to Carolina where he would with Washington. A refusal to sign the extension would surely reduce the compensation we might receive.

To be fair he does not trust the judgement of the FO and the one key teammate they saddled this team with that prevented them ever seeing daylight in regards to playoffs. It isn't teammates he doesn't believe in, it's the bag of beans Watson who won't even be here for this coming year. And when he plays, he's worthless.

I said 80% of Myles, the Eagles didn't have a Myles on their D line but won them a SB. On the other hand I hope the SB raises the asking price for Myles.

I think everybody knows that Watson is done.  Even if we wanted him to play he will miss the first part of the season, so to me he is talking about other players on the team as well but agree to a lesser extent than talking about the FO and Watson.

This vent isn't aimed at you ballpeen - this is just a convenient spot to park some thoughts.  Franchises live and die by their FOs.  Howie Roseman, whom I had hoped Andrew Berry learned a thing or 2 under before he returned to the Browns, builds through the draft perpetuating a healthy cap.

The SB Champs drafted their entire OL that gave Barkley the best season of his career & a SB Championship. LT Jordan Mailata 7th Round 2018 (no college football), LG Landon Dickerson 2nd Round 2021 (Bama), C Cam Jurgens 2nd Round 2022 (Nebraska), RG Tyler Steen 3rd Round 2023 (Bama), RT Lane Johnson 1st Round 2013 (Oklahoma).  I'll even add their TE Dallas Goedert 2nd Round 2018 (South Dakota State).

On Defense, NT/DT Jordan Davis 1st Round 2022 (Georgia), DT Jalen Carter 1st Round 2023 (Georgia), DT Milton Williams 3rd Round 2021 (Louisiana Tech), DT Marlon Tuipulotu 6th Round 2021 (USC), DE Josh Sweat 4th Round 2018 (Florida State), DE Nolan Smith 1st Round 2023 (Georgia), DE Jalyx Hunt 3rd Round 2024 (Houston Christian) and going all the way back to a Phil Savage pick - DE Brandon Graham 1st Round 2010 (TSUN)

Understanding the SB was dominated on the line of scrimmage - what's the difference between Philly's Ownership & FO and the Browns Ownership & FO? In 2022 this FO wanted lighter & faster LBers to play behind a sub-par IDL/DTs they didn't address in the draft.  Even Atlanta had a backup RB that ran a 5k with the football on our defense between the tackles.  The Browns also had multiple injuries within their LBer Corps that season.

Even if Cleveland found their dream QB - do they have setup in Cleveland what Josh Allen had waiting for him in Buffalo?  1st Buffalo knew what they wanted and why Josh Allen was their guy.  They already studied him enough to understand anything that needed work or mechanical adjustments would be coached.  They also had ownership, FO and coaching staff that knew how to develop the QB and work their young QB through growing pains.  They weren't going to give up on him.  Why?  They identified why they wanted him to fully understand why they needed him.  The ownership and FO in Cleveland doesn't have the 1st clue how to find the right QB and do what Buffalo did IMO.  I hope I'm wrong about this; but I've been watching the Browns since the end of the 60s/early 70s to assure me I've invested enough time on this team to make such a statement. Today, this team has needs all over the roster inclusive of/starting with LT, QB1 and QB2.

Yes, they invested high draft picks on the OL & DL.  That and their talented skill players make them a good team.  Hopefully Zinter plays well for us.

  • Zinter better play well.  He was a 3rd rounder.  For some positions the 3rd round is nearing the end of where you can get good players. For interior linemen the 3rd round is smack in the middle of the garden spot.  Maybe even nudging towards the top.

Noy many interior guys go in the 1st round.  You see them start to get drafted in rounds 2-4....maybe even round 5.  We sure don't need to have another Nick Harris experience.

I don't care if Zinter becomes an all-pro player.  He just needs to be a good player.  It doesn't take long to see if a IOL player is going to be good.  He came in off a broken leg. OK ...he got to play some last year, call it his developmental year.  If he gets in there this year he needs to be blowing snot.

No problem my friend. I wouldn't have taken offense even if it was.

The reality of the draft is you have four real picks to make.  Your first four.  After that you have to rely on a degree of luck.  So over four years you have to hit on about 85% of those first picks.  You can only miss on a couple of picks over four years.

  • @flugel said:

Not all of them were high draft picks on the OL.  Their LT Mailata was a 7th round pick.  The only 1st round pick they have on their OL is Lane Johnson.  The other 3 starers were 2nd and 3rd round picks.  A couple backups they drafted were G Trevor Keegan 5th Round 2024 (Michigan), C/G Dylan McMahon 6th Round 2024 (NC State),  They DID sign a former 1st round pick from the Jets as a UFA - Mekhi Becton to backup either OT spot and he ended up filling in for injuries at G and T.  In fact, we saw a lot of him in the SB.

To your point though - their DL does have a lot of high round picks.  Their IDL/DT position were back to back 1st round picks from Georgia from a FO guy that believes you build your defense from the inside out.  If anyone paid particular attention to what unfolded in the SB - Philly's IDL tied up 3 blockers freeing up glory from favorable numbers for DL teammates to exploit frequently, or better put - all game long.

Philly also has productive 1st round picks at other positions like rookie CB Quinyon Mitchell (Toledo), WR DeVonta Smith 2021 (Bama).  Here's a couple 2nd round picks of theirs' CB Cooper DeJean 2024 (Iowa) and QB Jalen Hurts 2020 (Oklahoma/Bama).

Roseman didn't waste draft picks on kickers. I just wish Berry learned more about the draft when he was working under Roseman in Philly. However, I suppose that is a lot easier with a more football competent owner in Philly.

The point of all this?  When you have a FO like Philly that knows what it is doing in the draft (with rookie salary caps on the 1st contracts) - I think they've been able to maintain a fairly healthy salary cap while being a fun team for their hometown fans to follow.
