Thoughts on Matt Stafford Coming to the Browns?
-
I’m sure he’s heard the rumor that Haslam loves to overpay for QB’s.
After he signs he gets the "oh by the way - your LT on the blind side is Jed Wills. He's getting out of his stance every 3rd play or so. In about 5 years we think he can be exactly what Andrew Whitworth was for you. We love to protect our investments here."
Maybe the unpopular rookie QB prospects is the route to go after all. Being a 2nd overall pick is at least a little more inviting than being a veteran in the last 2-3 years of his career.
I'm gonna remind everybody that Josh Rosen was more popular in here than Josh Allen was pre-draft just in case any of us wants to pretend we're QB experts. BTW, I was Rosen's biggest critic - so who says I get them all wrong? Unfortunately I was also a critic of Josh Allen - so there goes that... Today, I'm not prejudice - I hate all QBs.
Since you gotta have a QB - both of the top 2 QB prospects have a lot of starting experience. For anyone thinking that doesn't mean anything - Mitch L. Trubisky only had 1 year of starting experience coming out before he's changed NFL teams 3-4 times already. If we gotta go with a vet while the rookie is learning - Flacco doesn't have any grandchildren yet so he's probably still interested. If not, the pickings are so slim - we may end up with a vet like Trubisky (if available) or pull a 61 year old Testaverde off the couch. See how fun it is sticking with Jimmy's business in the AFC North of all places?

Matt would have a great familiarity with the language and play structure, given his time with McVey. So from an on-field standpoint, it makes sense.

Get him now and maybe Myles might chose to stay. Instant credibility. Or of course just another over the hill player looking for a nice payout on the way home (a Browns specialty I believe).

Yes, he'd be looking for one last payday. If money were no object, I'd love the idea of bringing Stafford here...and if they really liked Sanders, I'd still draft him. In that scenario Sanders knows that he ain't starting this year. He will come up through the ranks and be given the time to hone the craft and learn from a pro. So I'd try and upgrade my OL in FA and get a RB somewhere in what draft picks would be left to us after working the Stafford deal.

10% chance. 90% chance his performance would decline if that 10% came true

If one looks through his career stats one sees that as the team surrounding him improved, his completion pct and QB rating improved. On a decent team he's gonna have a 66, 67 ish completion pct. It'd be awesome if we could get 2 out of 3 passes completed.
But we can't afford him, and he'd have to be nuts to come to the QB graveyard while he still has value as a SB winning QB. I think we'd be more in the Geno Smith ballpark of QB's.

It'd be nice to have him, but I don't see any path for Stafford coming to the Browns. Sure, kick the tires but that's about it.
Stafford's under contract, what could we offer in a trade? Stafford is 37 and still has a few more years left in him, but I wouldn't sell the farm to get him. I'd only do that if QB was the only thing we needed for a Super Bowl and we are far from that right now. Plus, Stafford reportedly wants a new contract for more money, which we can't offer unless the Rams took Deshaun's contract back in a trade.
The Rams made it to the playoffs and won a playoff game with Stafford this year, I don't see why the Rams would get rid of him. They gave the Eagles their toughest game in the playoffs. Get him some more weapons and run it back if I'm the Rams.

That’s a big price tag for a guy who would be bridge QB. This team should be built for the move to Brookpark, when Stafford would probably be retired

It should be until we factor in the FO that caused the current rebuild has tenure. The time to fire and hire the upgrade should be BEFORE a draft that mercifully extends this team draft slots near the top of every round. Right now, an owner with tunnel vision on Brookpark remains distracted from knowing who the potential FO upgrades are in his business. If Berry messes this draft up - of course we'll be very annoyed with him. Having said that, 100% of the blame would fall on Jimmy.
Right now Brookpark sounds more like an untapped sitcom awaiting a clever author with an ideal sense of humor.

Part of me thinks they should have just cleaned house and started the full rebuild now, the other part of me wonders who would volunteer to come in right now and do the grunt work. A really talented young upcomer at GM and/or head coach might pass on having to go to a team that has to pretty much start at the ground floor. Experienced guys probably wouldn’t even consider it.

I think that a major deterrent to coming to Cleveland might be having to interview with DePodesta. If he were a part of the 'cleaned house' then it might be a little more appealing (tolerable?) to come here.

31 other teams are probably laughing their asses off at the combines still seeing Berry & DePodesta still in charge of "The Dumpster Fire." This is a sequel that beats the crap out of Rocky.

LA Rams have their QB and LT situation all set before free agency and the draft. LT Alaric Jackson signed a 3 year contract for 57 million $ which prevented him from hitting the free agent market (where there were rumors a lot of teams were interested). They GET it. Now they can draft to compete for a Super Bowl. That's what smart owners and FOs do.

But would that smart FO do that with Wills? And our other 2 top OT's are always getting hurt. Plus Bitonio might retire. Our OL needs a major overhaul. - Zinter needs to be a good player
