Thoughts on Matt Stafford Coming to the Browns?

The Browns Board

That’s a big price tag for a guy who would be bridge QB. This team should be built for the move to Brookpark, when Stafford would probably be retired

It should be until we factor in the FO that caused the current rebuild has tenure.  The time to fire and hire the upgrade should be BEFORE a draft that mercifully extends this team draft slots near the top of every round.  Right now, an owner with tunnel vision on Brookpark remains distracted from knowing who the potential FO upgrades are in his business.  If Berry messes this draft up - of course we'll be very annoyed with him.  Having said that, 100% of the blame would fall on Jimmy.

Right now Brookpark sounds more like an untapped sitcom awaiting a clever author with an ideal sense of humor.

Part of me thinks they should have just cleaned house and started the full rebuild now, the other part of me wonders who would volunteer to come in right now and do the grunt work. A really talented young upcomer at GM and/or head coach might pass on having to go to a team that has to pretty much start at the ground floor. Experienced guys probably wouldn’t even consider it.

I think that a major deterrent to coming to Cleveland might be having to interview with DePodesta.  If he were a part of the 'cleaned house' then it might be a little more appealing (tolerable?) to come here.

31 other teams are probably laughing their asses off at the combines still seeing Berry & DePodesta still in charge of "The Dumpster Fire."   This is a sequel that beats the crap out of Rocky.

  • LA Rams have their QB and LT situation all set before free agency and the draft.  LT Alaric Jackson signed a 3 year contract for 57 million $ which prevented him from hitting the free agent market (where there were rumors a lot of teams were interested). They GET it.  Now they can draft to compete for a Super Bowl.  That's what smart owners and FOs do.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the Browns had that too?

Since I started this thread, I thought it seemed appropriate to put this here. ?

But would that smart FO do that with Wills?  And our other 2 top OT's are always getting hurt.  Plus Bitonio might retire.  Our OL needs a major overhaul.  -  Zinter needs to be a good player

How many more horrible investments do you want to list before you get how bad this FO really is?  Are we going to wait until Dawand Jones shows up way overweight and out of shape a 3rd time before someone we're counting on realizes this guy isn't prioritizing his football career?    Playing pretend with all this ain't gonna help us.

Regarding the Rams, before they resigned this LT's work ethic they had a longtime veteran LT Andrew Whitworth with a great work ethic.  They know how to win.

I hear ya.  But it's what we've got to work with right now.  Berry certainly sounds smart.  Perhaps he got an honorary degree from Harvard.  🙂

    ? Well played.

Do you agree people can be very smart at some things and not others?   I think we both know how much each other wants this team to win.  I just need him to ace the draft like it's another one of those Harvard exams he used to ace.  Not only that, he worked under Howie Roseman in Philly.  There's no getting around this - we need a big draft from Berry.  The good news is the Browns are drafting near the top of every round.

Ya only know what ya know.  I'm pretty sure that Berry wasn't enrolled in Football Player Evaluation 101.

I remember the last time that we had the #2 pick in the draft and needed a QB.  I wanted Jared Goff.  Our guys didn't like the 2 QB's (Goff & Wentz).  DePodesta came right out and said that they didn't think they were all that good.  Well, the Rams traded up to #1 and drafted Goff.  And I remember saying, The Rams traded all the way up to #1 to draft a QB because they WANT to win!  Well, DePo and the Browns were half right.  Wentz wasn't all that good.  And here we are again.  The #2 pick and needing a QB...and people saying that neither QB is all that good.  As Yogi Berra would say, It's Dejavu all over again.

Good summary.  Teams are only as good as the guy(s) putting them together.   As far as Sanders & Ward go, I barely watched either of their teams play last year. I get the feeling both guys can succeed based on their accuracy and TD:INT ratio.  Both guys improved their football programs' winning percentage last year.  Now they're entering poker season where team hoping they can get one to drop to their draft slot might suddenly have a volunteer to be an un-named source/scout making up false information about one or both of the guys.  Meanwhile, it's also nit-pick season.

Jared Goff is a very good QB today; and I doubt he's going to wake up a terrible QB any time soon.  Young QBs, all QBs, need play makers to tap what's possible.  Baker with Mike Evans + Pro Bowl LT = over 40 TD passes.  Baker without him bounced from the Browns to the Panthers to the Rams in a very short span.  DePodesta doesn't have the understanding in football that he has with baseball.  Football requires viewing film - but he clearly prefers spreadsheets.  For example, some guys that have high tackle volumes are often game plan bullseyes where the location of many of their tackles aren't at/near the point of attack.  Remember Wali Rainer?  Jacob Phillips was a guy they liked because of his tackle volume at LSU - but did they ever watch the film of this guy?  Doesn't look like it.  Last year, @tiamat63 and I watched a LBer from Texas that looked better on paper than he did on film in some videos we broke down. Gotta see the film to identify WHY he's a need/necessary for this team even with the fitness champs at the combine. At least with Schwartz here - I'm guessing he'll be looking at film of guys they're interested in and encouraging that from others. Okay, maybe I'm just wishful thinking...

Aside from QB, there's glaring needs at LT, Safety, Corner, RB, LB.  In addition, if Bitonio retires - add LG.  If Myles gets traded - add edge rush.   McGuire and Okoronkwo are some young guys that have showed promise at DE.  Schwartz seems to be more confident in them than Alex Wright.  While Kicker is a need - NE didn't need to draft Adam Vinatieri who was as good as it gets.  His second team didn't need to draft a kicker either.  It was kind of nice not to have WR as a pressing need. That said, the talent of Travis Hunter and the ability to play WR or CB or maybe a lot of 1 of those with certain packages/situations at the other.

He'd be an interesting guy to have on our team.....if we weren't in dire straights at QB.   The thing about good CB's is that they still need the help of a pass rush.  Ya can't cover a guy forever.  And as a WR he'd be limited by the QB position.  But it would be cool to bring him in on offense, and if nothing else he would serve as a decoy actually requiring coverage.

I wonder which QB TN will draft 1st.  I'm not an expert but I'm getting the impression there's not a huge difference between Sanders and Ward with accuracy favoring Sanders a little.  They both have 5 years of starting experience involving more than 1 college.  Ward played at 3 different colleges. That 5 years of experience at more than 1 school certainly helped Bo Nix especially with a demanding HC like Payton.

I would be a little puzzled if the Browns drafted Sanders.

One of the reasons they got rid of Mayfield was he was cocky, and immature.

If you have seen any interviews with Sanders, he breathes arrogance and immaturity.

He probably gets it from his dad.

Ya know I really haven't watched any interviews.  I guess I'm too focused on how the player could help us on the field.  In reality, I don't like cocky players.  It only intensifies the other team(s)...and makes us look like dumb bullies.    -  I like that he doesn't mind playing within the system.  To me that points somewhat to character.

edit - add:  I should mention that there's the Dad of Sanders that comes with the package.  We've had an experience with a player's Dad (OBJ).  And Deion wouldn't be shy in giving his thoughts on how the Browns are or are not doing a good job with his son.  The Browns would be a ripe target for QB criticism

I think Sanders will go to TN.  He's more careful with the ball.  Maybe too careful.  He doesn't really throw his receivers open.  He likes to wait for them to be open.  (kinda' like Tyrod Taylor)  In the NFL you gotta get that ball out-a-there.  (especially with our current OL 🙂 )  So, he'll have to be schooled on that....but it's commendable that he wants to be careful with the ball.  It's a good trait to have.  The other difference talked about is Sanders' floor.  His mechanics and stuff are better.  That said, Ward to me, looks like he slings the ball from any ol' position he has to.  Reminds me of Mahommes.  Ward has kind of a big wind up, but he does it really fast.  Still though, the ball is out there for a second for a passing DLineman to swat at.

I don't know that we'd take Ward at #2.  I think we'd probably take Sanders if TN didn't.

It's funny you mention this, because I see the comp as a good one too...

Both are ok physically... Good but not great arm, size and athleticism.

Both entering the draft are/were high floor, questionable ceiling type guys.
