Russ Wilson Flying to Cleveland to meet with the Browns
-
From what I've read, Atlanta is willing to keep, and will only trade him. They want both assets
We can give them the 1st syllable of assets. Neither guy that was in Pittsburgh last year wanted to stay; and they were working pretty diligently to try to re-sign Fields this year - and he CHOSE THE JETS. ? Fields gave that franchise a 4-2 record, 2 middle fingers & a Partridge in a Pear Tree on one of the lowest QB incomes of any QB (while only throwing 1 INT in that span).
I never thought I'd say this about that franchise In Pittsburgh but once upon a time a guy in Philly named Rocky told someone "YOU SHOULDA PLANNED AHEAD!" Speaking of which, I just watched the 1st Rocky movie again a few weeks ago and he still didn't win. That said, I also recently re-watched a movie that showed a FO for Cleveland Browns actually knew how to draft. Fiction sucks! What's next? Winning the lottery getting intercepted by Flugel's alarm clock?

If Wilson would sign with the Browns, and with Pickett already on the roster, what's the chances the Browns use their first pick on a QB then?

I don't think it would change anything.
I am just not sure we have ever been set on using our 1st pick on a QB. I am pretty sure we will use one of our first two picks on a QB. That second choice might not be at 33. We might move up to make that selection....that's if we don't take one at #2.

Russ and Pickett should allow you to punt on that position in the draft and build the support pieces (OL, RB, TE, WR) after we draft Carter at the top that can gain experience in 2025 and help a rookie QB in 26.
And if Russ looks solid you can bring him and draft a guy in 2026.

The great thing about the NFL.. You are a player(team mate), Coach or a system away from being successful.. Its all about the path you are on... With a lot of help from yourself...And timing...

Do you think Berry and Stefanski are in the position to be able to play the long game and do this though?
This is what I want them to do, but I don't think people who are on the hot seat will.
It's why I wanted the team blown up after the end of the season and a true rebuild started with the team moving in to Brookpark as the target.

I agree with this - they won't have to draft a qb until next year, if it works out.
Next year's qb draft class looks pretty important:
https://www.si.com/nfl/2026-quarterback-nfl-draft-class-preview
"
So how does 2026 look? It’s a topic of conversation I delved into with a few team people over the past week. Before then, I had a couple guys tell me that LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier could’ve been the first quarterback to go this year, and I had a couple others agree. A couple teams, I heard, actually encouraged Penn State’s Drew Allar to declare, expecting that he’d rise through the process and go in the top 10. Clemson’s Cade Klubnik is another one who, had he declared, probably would’ve gone relatively high this year.
Then, there’s South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers, who has an intriguing physical skill set, Georgia transfer Carson Beck at Miami, and of course the possibility that someone shoots up through the season such as Jayden Daniels did in 2023 or Cam Ward did in ’24.
That there’s a nice list of guys there to work with already (and I’m assuming that Arch Manning won’t leave Texas after a single season starting) adds a layer to the dynamic at the position in this year’s draft. If you’re a coach or general manager with some job security, you might be tempted to sign a vet and wait a year to draft a quarterback."

Where will we be drafting in '26 with Wilson at QB for '25? 14th or so?
There aren't many reason why you don't draft a QB with the #2 pick in the draft.
1) You don't need a starting QB. - not us.
2) There are no QB's available at pick #2 worth drafting in the top dozen or so picks. - and that's a fine and valid reason...but you have to be right. If one of the next teams drafting picks the QB and he turns out to be good while your team remains floundering around...then you have to fall on your sword. So, as Clint Eastwood would say...'Are ya feeling lucky?' - Ironically, here we are having recently signed one of those QB's that shouldn't have been drafted so high.

Good points, except taking a chance on drafting a qb when you just don't think he's the guy, not sure, etc, is a waste of that pick. Drafting an elite player that you know will work out seems more in order.
Sanders is special, but can he stay healthy, etc?
I'm just not sold on any other qb in this upcoming draft.
Carter, who I said had a red flag problem, has some thinking he has fallen out of the top five. And Tyler Warren, the guy I want, is said in this draft, to go #7.
Imagine putting Warren in the offense, plays designed to use his crazy versatility, to help whoever starts for the Browns.
Who knows.

It's like you so want to admit taking a QB at #2 in this draft is a reach, but you just can't quite do it.... ?

Dude missed one game.... in his entire collegiate career.
of course he did. But the NFL is bigtime.
the college defenses of N D State, Nebraska, Colorado State, Baylor, UCF, Kansas State, Arizona, Cincinnati, Texas Tech, Utah, Kansas, OK State, BYU, aren't like the NFL defenses he will face, and a longer season.
We watched Colorado a lot of the season - he's terrific, but there are concerns in some NFL circles. And Shadeur is very close to being the same size as Baker Mayfield.
I hope Shadeur has a terrific, long career - I hope he goes to an offense where he doesn't get banged around, doesn't run qb sneaks,....
***************************************************
Former New York Jets scout Daniel Kelly has raised questions about former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ medical risk ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft.
"Shadeur Sanders’ Medical History Could See Him Drop Out of Top 10 in NFL Draft
Sanders is expected to be an early first-round pick, but SI Colorado Buffaloes said “he was complaining about numbness in his extremities” back in 2023 following a fractured back. That resulted in him being pulled mid-game and is something that could make or break a team’s decision to select him."
"However, teams are clearly more than aware of the medical risk and that a fractured back can lead to further issues later on. Front offices will want to be absolutely certain he is their long-term QB with what is expected to be a strong 2026 draft class for those behind center."

Daniel Kelly? That dude has some big time wiffs for a professional. And not just a few either. Something I've learned, especially in the last 8 years - to be more measured with our words and evaluations.
If Sanders checked out physically for the last year and a half with no issues, then health concerns aren't a flag. Especially considered he played behind one of the worst power 5 OLs for two seasons and missed only that one game.
true, but most draft experts have "wiffs". and it isn't just Daniel Kelly.
Shadeur should be drafted high, he's terrific - and again, he isn't going to be a qb sneak guy in the NFL, more like a Tom Brady guy, a Dan Morino type guy.
not just Kelly:
"However, lead NFL draft analyst
doesn’t seem to agree with the fact, as he thinks if Shedeur Sanders enters the pro league as a starter, he might end up ruining his career. As he says, “I think that if he’s a starter in the NFL and goes to the right system, I think he’s more of a mid-tier starting quarterback at the NFL level, but he plays the game in a way that you can start him and feel good about him with a high floor. The big question is, does he have the physical gifts to really be that kind of a quarterback to take you into the playoffs and beyond?”****************************************************
"Look Shedeur Sanders’ accuracy and toughness speak volumes, but in the NFL draft, grit alone doesn’t earn gold stars. His physical attributes, compared to other top prospects, raise some concerns that could make teams reluctant to use a high draft pick on him. Amidst this uncertainty, his draft stock is suffering. Mel Kiper of ESPN has moved him down to No. 4, with odds at +500, while Cam Ward remains a steady -140. The latest concern? His physicality is now a new red flag."
***************************************************************
I hadn't read this, but my point about Tom Brady is also made by this author:
"
But that doesn’t mean Shedeur Sanders is not good. He possesses accuracy, pocket presence, and sharp decision-making—qualities that could potentially make him a dependable NFL starter. In today’s NFL, where dynamic players like Mahomes and Allen excel, the question remains: does Shedeur have the physical attributes required to compete at an elite level? This uncertainty looms large. The NFL values quarterbacks who can dominate games, a mold that Shedeur doesn’t quite fit.
Then again, neither did Tom Brady, who was marked less for being slow, unathletic, and lacking arm strength. Shedeur could defy expectations. Brady’s unimpressive 40-yard dash time of 5.24 seconds led him to be the 199th pick, far from being seen as a generational talent. Fast forward to today, with seven Super Bowls under his belt, those initial doubts seem absurd. It goes to show that the right system, mindset, and relentless effort can change the narrative."

Actually, I would choose Sanders #1 overall....or at 2 if he's available. But I'm pretty sure he's going #1 overall. And you're afraid that DePodesta sees it that way too. (trade up)
Ward? He could be good. I see his style of throwing being loosely tied to Mahommes. Sling it from anywhere, any position. However, my confidants could persuade me from one side of the fence to the other - I like Sanders' respect for protecting possession of the ball and for willingness to work within the framework of the system. And I'm betting that in his genes is enough athleticism to do what you need your QB to do in today's game. That's purely from a football perspective. Outside of that there's personality and family. After all, we have had problems with a player's Dad before.

If the Browns think Sanders has “IT”. You do whatever it takes to pick him including moving from 2 to 1. That’s the strategy that I hope for next year if/when we don’t take a QB with that pick this season.
