Haslam Accepting Responsibility

Dinner with Shedeur Sanders this week. And Flacco is "in the conversation".
Stefanski isn't making the decision here, we all know Jimmuh is calling the shots at #2. Since the dinner seems so important, Shedeur better know which fork is the salad fork. I can never remember.

It's pretty much what most fans figured, the Haslams were behind it. No wonder AB & DePud are still here.
Not that I care a ton, but wow with DW rehabbing here I can't imagine what he's thinking now.
I'll tell you exactly what he's thinking "These Knuckleheads guaranteed me 230 million $ to sign a contract to play for the Browns whether I play or not. However, I would like to go on record and say I was willing to sweat way more than Jed Wells was."
Geee, how can we thank him?
Given the inclination that our culture is heading towards people being offended for being called out, I'm sure there is some surprise on his part probably to the tune of the following:
"Can you believe that, Bruh?"
"I can't believe they called me out, Dawg."
Either way, it's what is needed. Hell, Haslam finally called himself out as well.
These QB contracts are hamstringing teams. I know the salary cap will just keep going up, but the amount of money that these QBs are commanding and the (lack of) performance, and playoff appearances, that the franchises are getting out of them is insane.

How true! It's going way past absurd.

It certainly could mean that. But it really doesn't seem to fall in line with what Myles hinted that HE was told. Still, the whole famn damly went to dinner with Abdul Carter and his family during his pro day experience. We'll see who shows up for Colorado's pro day this Friday.
And yeah, he said to park the blame on him and Dee....but FIRST he stated that it was an 'organizational' decision....kinda' like, 'Hey, it wasn't just me. They all thought it was a good idea too, but I'll take the blame because I'm at the top of the organization.'
Many people on this board were pretty sure that Stef & Berry would be fired right after the season ended. In January, when they didn't get fired, I stated that being that Jimmuh is Mr. Trigger-Finger, it's possible that the Watson thing might have been his...well, I don't know if 'idea' is the right word because it could've been an option that Berry might have thrown out there along with other options...but perhaps he loved the idea and was a force behind having it happen.
Maybe they told Myles that they were going to bring in a veteran (which still has yet to transpire) and showed him a list of names (and he approved).
There are another of cloak and dagger, smoke and mirror psy ops that take place prior to the Draft to build as much leverage as possible surrounding picks and their value.
I'll never be a Haslam apologist. I was excited for him to be owner. That waned quickly.
Haslam wanted to show the fanbase he was serious about winning and it cost him a quarter of a billion dollars, actually much more but I'm not sure how to place a value on that. It blew up in his face and he finally admitted it. The first step to getting out of a hole is to quit digging.
He probably also subtlety admitted the mistake by bringing back AB and KS. I always thought about it as them getting one more chance, but maybe not.
The first step to getting out of a hole is to quit digging.
It seemed like they were, but I hadn't been quite sure that they were done digging the Watson pit. Hearing these statements from Haslem himself is quite telling. I'm sure that Haslem's statement about it taking a year or two to find the right QB is something that the Giants are decoding. Perhaps the Patriots might want to trade with us for Carter. They can't pressure the QB AT ALL. And I kinda' like their 3rd string QB, Joe Milton. Get him into the trade package somehow.
The plot is thickening.

He's thinking he is rich and can't wait to retire when he can enjoy his cash the rest of his life. Heck, so would I, you and everybody else.
-
That was not a swing and miss on a pitch. That was a swing and a miss while blindfolded and paying for the chance to get a hit.

I don't know my friend. I think sometimes we try to read too much in to things. He was just answering questions. I don't think it was to try to send smoke signals to anyone.
Haslam admits we took a shot and it didn't work. That is how it works sometimes. When we made the trade the objections weren't because people thought the guy couldn't play. It was because of moral objections to his character.

And to add....it wasn't a swing and a miss, it was, in the words of former Indians announcer Jimmy Dudley, or more recently, Cameron, from Ferris Beuler fame, it was a " Saaawiiiiing" and a miss.
-
For myself, that and I thought the draft picks was too much.
The picks are always too much, but that is what it is when talking about a QB with a few pro-bowls under the belt.
As for the guarantee, that didn't bother me. I mean, how many QB's who are considered star QB's don't earn their entire contract value? Teams don't just cut those guys.

The Texans enabled Watson with hotel rooms, knew about it, and yet were never punished. They should have had those 3 draft picks stripped away, nobody will ever convince me otherwise. Eff Houston and their cheating teams.

Exactly. And perhaps too honestly. (not purposely misleading for draft benefits) When saying that it might take a year or two to get the right QB, the Giants & Patriots should be thinking that the Browns are taking Carter (at least until Sanders' pro day Friday). Perhaps the Patriots will offer to trade with us since we have Myles and the Pats can't pressure the QB at all (I've watched some of their games).

Right. I, for one, was on board with the trade. (well, maybe not the 3 first rounders part) I had come to the conclusion that Baker was not the answer and with only Kenny Pickett available in the draft I felt like we were stuck with Baker. (and now we have Pickett...the universe is cruel sometimes)

This was something I had mentioned at one point some time back, I believe as far as the firing of Woods - accountability. Specifically accountability shown by the Front Office and ownership.
You see a play get fucked up post snap? Wrong route run, bad throw, missed gap, blown assignment? That simple tap on the chest -"my bad, my fault". That's all it takes.
Acknowledge that you've made a mistake, but that it hurt your team (and your fans in this case) as a whole. With that is the implied penance of making sure you don't repeat that mistake and working to be better.
Not saying I've any love for Haslam, but it's refreshing hearing something from him I never believed he would say.
-
even haslam had to eat humble pie and admit it - it was that horrible a move. Too bad this isn't next year's qb draft...

FFS, now he’s selling a tale of redemption.
He’s made a few training and vacation videos for his salary.
When the Agent (probably) received $6.9M of the $230M, he feels obligated to do cheesey stuff like the above.
"Lock in 4!" What a joke. These two orchestrated the greatest legal heist in history.
Lock in? How about STFD, STFU and go away.

While it is quite sickening - there's still 1 big question. When agent and client were narrowing down their finalists/teams in their search - didn't they eliminate Cleveland at 1 point near the end? The irony here, in more ways than one, is "no" should have meant no.
So WTF happened? The Browns decided their young QB with previous immaturity issues needed to go because that is REALLY bad. Today, that QB hasn't had any problems with maturity issues as he exceeded 40 TD passes as well as leading his new team to the playoffs 2 years in a row. Anyway, the SAME Jimmy Haslam that fell for Johnny Manziel's immaturity before all this - would now decide he had to win a competition for Watson that didn't really have any serious or coherent finalists remaining in their search. And why? Background check MAYBE? Oh no, not in Cleveland.
All this sickness is from an owner that makes very bad decisions. They never even figured out what it was specifically about Watson they needed so nothing was ready here for this QB with a history of improvise and pocket escape. As late as last year they were firing Offensive Assistant Coaches and we were reading how the new offense was going to be a better fit. How'd that go? And this franchise is about to invest in another QB - with an offensive staff and FO that have a good chance of getting fired before 2026. That means the new QB has to deprogram everything he learns in 2025? Make no mistake here - it all starts at the top of this organization. Since he arrived it's been nothing but firing scapegoats of his repeated mistakes. So, who hired Watson and agent? Counting college, of the 3 teams Watson played for - what was the only team he failed on the field with? Do we realize the magnitude of Jimmy when sports fans all over the country are watching Baker light it up 2 straight seasons while Cleveland is wondering if they'll ever get the right QB? I'd be ecstatic if they had a freakin criteria to determine what they're looking for and a comfort on knowing they're using FILM to find why someone emerges as their gotta have. That's all stuff I gotta keep worrying about with Jimmy as our Owner. That agent and Watson are symptoms of the problem to date: Jimmy.

The only thing I disagree with is your assessment of Baker's situation in Cleveland and some of the Watson dynamic.
Regarding Baker, I think he hit his ceiling in Cleveland. Maybe the organization needed to surround him with different coaches. The Panthers and Rams also passed on him. Maybe he needed a couple of extra seasons of maturity. Maybe he needed salty ocean air. Maybe he needed three organizations passing on him to create a chip on his shoulder. Maybe he just needed Mike Evans. Who doesn't? 105 TDs and 15.6 yds a catch over 11 seasons.
Regarding Watson, athletic QBs have been dominating college football for 150 years. It's easy to capture lightening in a bottle in college. Dabo hasn't put together anything that resembles the teams from 2015-2019. There are athletic QBs that burst onto the scene and keep DCs and defenses on their heels because of improvise and pocket escape.
It doesn't happen to everyone but it happened to DW. Either the DCs figure out tendencies. Maybe a step is lost. Maybe an inability to keep his hands and penis to himself psychologically screwed him.
I think it's safe to say that some athletes feel like they own the world when they get away with every sexual advance but once the first chink appears in the armor, it all comes crumbling down. Tiger Woods dominated golf lightyears more than DW ever dominated a football field, but the same thing happened to him.
I don't blame the Browns for Baker. I do blame the Browns for DW and agree with you 100%. The Browns were the fat, bald, smelly guy in ratty sweats with food stains all over his crusty white t-shirt that begged the prostitute for sex. Eventually, they offered enough money and gave the caveat of payment whether the happy ending took place or not.

Thanks! Great job with that AP1! Watson had success in Houston leading them to playoffs twice and making 3 Pro Bowls so there was NFL film available for the Browns.
It was time for Baker to go and none of his teammates spoke up for him after he was released. That said, there was a far better way to do that IMO - especially considering how long they tolerated a LT that refused to give them a professional effort. I will say I remembered Matt Hasselbeck defending Baker that year he played through an injury to his non-throwing shoulder. Anyway, he said he had that same injury and it was easily the worst year of his career constantly getting planted on it (by quick 260-270 lb edge rushers) with a running start. He said that'll make anyone antsy in the pocket. What hurt most was everyone forgot the good he did prior to that especially the media and fanbase. At the time, he said he hoped Baker wasn't going to go through the same thing he did. Well... He did. All that said - the rest of the country outside of Cleveland looks at that whole thing like Jimmy got exactly what he deserved. There's a Pro Bowl LT in Tampa today... Some teams get it - some don't ever seem to.
