Leroy Hoard is entitled to his opinion.  But some of us had come to the conclusion that he wasn't good enough  THE YEAR BEFORE  his shoulder injury.  (like ME, for one)  But we felt trapped.  There was nobody in the upcoming draft except Pickett.  And nobody thought that he was going to be too good.  So, the Watson route is the way they went because, obviously, they had Baker evaluated the way I did.  I'm glad that he's finally had at least a little bit of success with his 4th team.

Baker wasn't elite, but he was a heck of a fighter at the position, and took them to the playoffs. Whoever had Baker try to play with that stupid sling is a complete fool, regardless of if it was Baker or the stupid wimpy head coach, ...whoever. But Baker has had a lot of success and is a star with Tampa Bay - he just needed the right offense, right players, right coaches. They went with a disaster of a self-destructive trade not just because they thought Baker had limitations - or was permanently not going to even be as good as he was before the injury - they wanted to make a big splash. I had zero respect for that trade before it was made, and even less after it went south.

Anyways, I don't care who starts the season now, I hope they play well.

I'm glad we didn't have to sign Rodgers.

Steflunksi is a pansy - and I just saw this:

(twatson is the starter???? lol PIckett is the backup??? Flacco behind him???

    Gabriel is ahead of Sanders?

We would have been further ahead and have stability as an organization if we had kept Baker. Just when we think we’re on the right track, we end up back to the drawing board after an another unforeseen disastrous year.

When you come upon something like this on the Internet, simply ignore it.  We all know that there is no real depth chart for the QB position right now.  We all know that Watson has not been practicing with the team and has zero chance of being the starter on week 1.

Yeah, I didn't take it seriously, but it seems so weird that it was even posted by espn.

Obviously, Sanders is getting raves in practice, and wasn't on the list. It's stupid of espn.

"Clickbait Cal" has an accurate ring to it.

A supposedly reliable source has Flacco as #1

Watson at the bottom where he belongs, so you know they got that right.

If that holds up, then our division has 2 teams going with washed up starting QB’s.

I don't think this really surprises anyone.  For example, when Bernie was a rookie QB in 85 - the 34 year old Gary Danielson was the starter for the 1st 6 games.  This time of the year, we knew the rookie would start at some point that season.  The bigger question was when would be the right time.  In another one of these threads, I posted an interview with Bernie about his thoughts on the rookie QBs this year.

That’s true, but I was looking at the depth chart solely in terms of who the day 1 starter may be.

Former Cleveland Browns RB Fires Off Pointed Baker Mayfield Message

A former Cleveland Browns running back has dropped a very strong message on Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, who famously spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Browns.

    "

If Cleveland had a mulligan, it would surely go back and change how things transpired with Mayfield, and former Browns running back Leroy Hoard — who played for Cleveland from 1990 through 1995 — has made it very clear that the team made a mistake in letting him go.

“(Baker) had a contract that was up. He tried to play through the shoulder. He couldn’t do it. And everybody just said he sucked. They didn’t put any text context behind it. No, he sucks. So the Browns let him go," Hoard said during an appearance on the Go Long podcast. "Now, I tell you what, I’m going to be honest with you. If I was the Browns owner, you know what I would have right now? Baker Mayfield as my quarterback and $230 million in my pocket.”"

I agree, but it is easy to agree after the fact. Baker has always been an excellent QB. But it would have taken a lot for the Browns to win or get to a Super Bowl with him. But if you think about other QB's who have won one, he is and was good enough. Flacco, McMahon, Rypien, Dilfer, Williams (but he played great in that game). I could go on, but you get the point. Mayfield is a better QB than all of those guys, but he would have needed some better receivers to go with a shutdown defense. It has become clear that this Browns regime does not know how to draft receivers so...........

Except our two TEs are also very effective in any receiving position on the field. I look forward to the TE/hybrid era now that Fannin,Jr. is joining Njoku.

I'll argue that in the four years Baker was a starter here he was "excellent" for about one and half of them, and he's a guy who needs everything around him to be going well to succeed. He's a good but not great starting QB now who isn't a guy who elevates people around him. When Mike Evans went out last season for a stretch of games, we saw how Tampa Bay performed. All the QBs you named came from an era where a "great" QB threw for 3000 yards and 18 touchdowns a season, sans Flacco, but hell his Super Bowl win was years ago.

You are right on about the Browns ability to draft WRs, thank dog Berry is excellent at trading low draft picks for guys like Cooper and Jeudy.

Very well said!  Looking at the Subject Heading - isn't it a little strange that not 1 of Baker's teammates in Cleveland expressed any agitation or concern about the Browns just letting Baker go?  Not 1 (not even Bitonio who usually has something nice to say about a departing teammate he respected).  That's the type of transaction that has every local/national media source wanting to beat all the competition to release the 1st scoop that quotes a teammate that says "Losing Baker is really gonna cost us" or "this is wrong" or "Baker was a teammate we'll really miss around here" or "last time he was healthy we won 11 games + a playoff game scoring 48 points in Pittsburgh."  Having said that, somebody found hind sight 20/20 from Leroy Hoard, who played for the Browns from 1990-95 (30 years ago) - so all is not lost here.

    Certainly SOMEBODY musta' said SOMETHING.

The season before his shoulder injury season is when I'd officially given up on him.  I saw him as a selfish player whose selfishness was hurting the team.  The final straw was late in a game, late in the season, where we HAD to win to keep playoffs alive.  On 3rd down he had rolled right and had Demetric Felton wide open on the sideline.  A yard or 2 beyond the sticks.  A simple pitch and catch for a 1st down.  He looked right at Felton.  But nope, it had to be about him, so he pulled it down and ran for it.  Of course he didn't make it.  We had to punt.  We lost and didn't make the playoffs.   -  AND, if you remember, he pretty much refused to throw it to OBJ.  OBJ could be wide open, but he wasn't even going to look his way.  OBJ was a headlines grabber so Baker wasn't going to fuel his fire.  Basically, the only time he'd throw it to him was when absolutely nobody was open...pretty much just to show that he throws to OBJ.   Now, I think that most every QB at that time, if they had OBJ, would give him a quick look if the primary receiver was covered.

Having said all of that (again), he was constantly missing receivers high over the middle...because he's a shorter QB.

That's what I saw and what I thought about Baker.  Obviously, the Browns brain-trust saw something that they wanted to move off from also.  So it wasn't just me that wasn't overly happy with having Baker as the QB of the Browns.

Well taken, Baker had limitations, but so did the coaches and the owner. Tampa Bay knew how to make it all work just fine.

You're confused about the timeline. The season before the injury we did make the playoffs. Baker played with a makeshift OL and about 38 different receivers because of COVID. The season before the injury Baker looked elite almost the entire year, punched the Steelers in the face to win a playoff game, and was one bogus call from beating Mahomes and stamping a ticket to the AFC Championship game.

Thank you!  Yes, you're right.  We DID make the playoffs.  After the Steelers committed 5 or 6 turnovers to lose the game to us, we lost to the Chiefs because Baker refused to lob the ball over to Felton for the easy 1st down, so that he could run for it himself...which led to a punt and KC running out the clock.  I just felt that that was insanely stupid...and self centered.  -  Then, a year later we give up on him and move to Watson.  And a year after that, that idiot starts thinking that he's Nick Chubb when he's running with the ball.  Instead of sliding like a smart QB, he's lowering his shoulder and taking on tacklers until he gets himself injured and out for the rest of the year.  STUPID.  I want a smart QB.  Yeah, I like 'em tall and strong armed.  But if the tall, strong armed QB ain't too smart, then I don't need him.

We have 5 QB's.  Watson = Stupid (on AND off the field).  Flacco is old.  Pickett isn't good (hasn't been anyway).  Gabriel is a midget.  That leaves Sanders...Or...next April's two 1st round picks.

Completely agree with your take. Nobody at the time considered Mayfield a franchise QB after that season so people need to stop reflecting on that period with rose tinted glasses. At the time Watson was definitely an upgrade on paper.

  •  The fuck?  You can tell it's peak off-season.   We're talking about a QB that will starting his 4th season off our roster.
