There's a rumor I'm banging Kate Beckinsale.    Of course I started the rumor, but it's a rumor.

The one you didn't start involved Rosie O'Donnell. I didn't buy into either one, myself.

What can I say, the frank eroticism of Rosie O Donnell just catches you off guard.

Saw your boy Shemar play last night.

Couldn't help but noticed they played him exactly how I said they would - slide inside on passing downs to more of a 3i/4i role.

I didn't know he had finally signed.

Still not really full full go.  Vanilla offense,  Vanilla defense.   Mostly scripted both sides.  This is first preseason game. Not the last before final cut down

I think you'd be surprised how unscripted the offenses are in pre-season.

Perhaps scripted isn't the best word choice.  Intention was that teams aren't game planning like a regular season.  They are using these games trying to work on specific concepts, and situations.  As well as seeing guys in specific situations.   My glorified scrimmage description earlier was probably the better word choice

  • If Gabriel was only drafted to be back-up for next years' first rounder, isn't starting Sanders just the moneyball play?

    • If he is a pleasant surprise: you've got a starting QB on a 5th round rookie deal, and you can draft something else, potentially trading down again and picking up more assets.
    • If he's okay, but you down want to commit: stick with the original plan, draft a starter QB and trade him for assets next off-season.
    • If he bombs, bench him and at worst you have wasted a 5th rounder.

This seems like the type of high upside, low downside kind of play that the Browns will need to make to recover from the DW gamble.

Gabriel is who they wanted.  I don't want to call Sanders an Afterthought because he wasn't planned for....because actually, as the 4th round was slipping into history, he was being planned for.  He's Still Around!  What are the odds we can get him?  Anyone hearing anything?  There's some talk that the Eagles are going to take him.   etc, etc.   As we know they traded to the pick ahead of the Eagles.  So, the plan was late in forming, but they still ultimately DID put together a plan to go get him.

But the REAL QB plan was Gabriel.  So, no matter who else thinks that Sanders would make a better Browns QB, the guys that planned to draft Gabriel are going to give that guy every opportunity to prove that their original plan was the correct decision.....that's just human nature.

Agree with your post... But at some point.. you do what is best for the team despite your original plan or feelings... But then I remind myself... Its the Browns...

Too bad I couldn't choose the like emoji AND the laugh emoji....'cuz that's where I was at.  🙂

As far as what's best for the team, well, some will say this is what we should do, and others will say something else.  And there's lots to choose from this year.  And sometimes what's best for the team is a relative statement....as we saw last year.  Because as the season wore on, LOSING is what was best for the team (in the long run)....but it's never what's best for the players ON the team who are playing their hardest on the field.  It's depressing to lose all the time.  It feels good to win.  -  Looking forward to the upcoming practices and game with the Eagles.

  • “I’d confirm Mike Silver’s report that the Browns got trade offers for Dillon Gabriel on the Saturday morning of draft weekend, which essentially confirms the interested teams were prepared to take him in the fourth round (despite perception that he was overdrafted in the third round). How did the idea that he could go that high fly under the radar? I’ve heard Gabriel crushed his meetings with teams, and many saw his floor, as a result, as a long-term backup,” Breer wrote.

    ----------

Saturday morning eh?  What time did the draft start on Saturday?  I'm assuming that these 'phone calls' happened after we drafted Sanders.  I mean, we were a team with no QB.  Who would think that we'd be willing to trade away the one we just drafted......until after we drafted another?

I agree. Well, with you that is, because I think Gabriel is a smurf who would do better as a mascot than as starting QB. Having said that, both our points are not mutually exclusive, are they? Sander did fall into the shopping cart, and now we would do well to extract value from that pick. Starting him now achieves that, with little to no downside.

The Browns traded up to get Mike Phipps at #3 overall in 1970; but when they drafted Brian Sipe in the 13th round in 1972 - should they have just kept telling Sipe "yeah but you've never been the plan man."  They could have but a lot of us were ecstatic they didn't. It'll be interesting.  Like Drew Brees (it took him 3 years of growing pains before Pro Bowl #1 the year rookie QB Philip Rivers held out), I think Gabriel will take longer to develop.  If Sanders heats up - they gotta go with the better guy.

The Browns are gonna have to settle on a QB sooner rather than later and quit dicking around with the patience of the fan base.. Especially since they are basically ripping the fans off for the new Taj Mahal they wont be able to tailgate at..

Apparently, today the team announced an unofficial depth chart for the remaining two pre season games.  QB is:  Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel, Sanders, Huntley, Watson.   🙂

As you know, I'm not exactly patient. I'd do it the way the Browns did it with Danielson and Kosar but not even that long. I'd start Flacco for 3 weeks with a short leash.  We gotta go Glad-he-ater mentality with this. Play well and live another series or week as the starter.  The same goes for Sanders.  If he's not sharp, put the step-stool QB out there.

Tough break.  He needs to be out there practicing and playing every chance he can get.

I read where his Dad, the defensive player, tweeted out to his son to, basically, not listen to coaching.  Hold the ball.  Get rid of the ball.  Do what you do.  No reason to change anything for the NFL.
