If Gabriel was only drafted to be back-up for next years' first rounder, isn't starting Sanders just the moneyball play?  Starting Sanders was the right play because Gabriel & Pickett were hurt.  Otherwise, they  would've played and Sanders would've watched.   -   Gabriel was drafted as next year's draft pick's backup...OR...starter for the next decade if warranted.  Sanders just kind of, fell into the shopping cart, the day after Gabriel was drafted.

    • If he is a pleasant surprise: you've got a starting QB on a 5th round rookie deal, and you can draft something else, potentially trading down again and picking up more assets.
    • If he's okay, but you down want to commit: stick with the original plan, draft a starter QB and trade him for assets next off-season.
    • If he bombs, bench him and at worst you have wasted a 5th rounder.

This seems like the type of high upside, low downside kind of play that the Browns will need to make to recover from the DW gamble.

Gabriel is who they wanted.  I don't want to call Sanders an Afterthought because he wasn't planned for....because actually, as the 4th round was slipping into history, he was being planned for.  He's Still Around!  What are the odds we can get him?  Anyone hearing anything?  There's some talk that the Eagles are going to take him.   etc, etc.   As we know they traded to the pick ahead of the Eagles.  So, the plan was late in forming, but they still ultimately DID put together a plan to go get him.

But the REAL QB plan was Gabriel.  So, no matter who else thinks that Sanders would make a better Browns QB, the guys that planned to draft Gabriel are going to give that guy every opportunity to prove that their original plan was the correct decision.....that's just human nature.

I agree. Well, with you that is, because I think Gabriel is a smurf who would do better as a mascot than as starting QB. Having said that, both our points are not mutually exclusive, are they? Sander did fall into the shopping cart, and now we would do well to extract value from that pick. Starting him now achieves that, with little to no downside.

The Browns traded up to get Mike Phipps at #3 overall in 1970; but when they drafted Brian Sipe in the 13th round in 1972 - should they have just kept telling Sipe "yeah but you've never been the plan man."  They could have but a lot of us were ecstatic they didn't. It'll be interesting.  Like Drew Brees (it took him 3 years of growing pains before Pro Bowl #1 the year rookie QB Philip Rivers held out), I think Gabriel will take longer to develop.  If Sanders heats up - they gotta go with the better guy.

The Browns are gonna have to settle on a QB sooner rather than later and quit dicking around with the patience of the fan base.. Especially since they are basically ripping the fans off for the new Taj Mahal they wont be able to tailgate at..

Stefanski said just that a week or so ago.

Apparently, today the team announced an unofficial depth chart for the remaining two pre season games.  QB is:  Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel, Sanders, Huntley, Watson.   🙂

As you know, I'm not exactly patient. I'd do it the way the Browns did it with Danielson and Kosar but not even that long. I'd start Flacco for 3 weeks with a short leash.  We gotta go Glad-he-ater mentality with this. Play well and live another series or week as the starter.  The same goes for Sanders.  If he's not sharp, put the step-stool QB out there.

Refresh my memory: when was the last time that top brass showed they cared about the fan base?

By raising prices $21/ticket after a 3-14 season?

When they got rid of those ugly uniforms that they came up with.

Shedeur Sanders becomes latest Browns QB to suffer injury setback amidst camp battle

Tough break.  He needs to be out there practicing and playing every chance he can get.

I read where his Dad, the defensive player, tweeted out to his son to, basically, not listen to coaching.  Hold the ball.  Get rid of the ball.  Do what you do.  No reason to change anything for the NFL.

If his daddy is going to meddle.. We may as well trade his ass... I like Shadeurs general personality.. He's great with the kids... But somehow... It just feels like its going to go all wrong..

  • So, now we've gotten to see our 2 draft pick QB's play a half of football.  The OLine might have played slightly better for Gabriel than with Sanders.  Perhaps that's a sign of progress.

IMO, it's almost a dead heat between the two.  I say almost because Gabriel showed that he gets the ball out quickly, much like what was said about him post draft.  And since that's what Stef likes & wants so badly, he's gonna be ahead of Sanders on Stef's scorecard.

In Gabriel & Sanders we have polar opposites.  One's a football midget, and the other has football height.  One's right handed and the other is a lefty.  One has worked on his celebration moves...and i'll bet Gabriel wouldn't be doing that stuff ( more like the Browns of old, but then, we haven't seen him throw a TD pass yet ).  -  I'm reminded of a little story from Sanders,  Yeah, I asked him what he does for fun.  He said, Football.  So I said, No, like, what hobbies do you have?  He said, Football.   🙂  POLAR Opposites.  Sanders likes to have fun, joke and make light of stuff.  However, everyone has said that he is one of the hard workers on the team, in meetings and on the field.

Both of them had very good numbers last season and I think that they each did a good job in showing that those numbers aren't a fluke.  So far it's been pretty cool watching them duke it out.  Although I like taller QB's, I wish them both luck in equal parts.

  • So,  THIS WEEK, Stef will announce who (Flacco) will be the starting QB.  There's 3 practices this week, then Saturday's Rams game.  Then roster cuts.  Then signings of cut players along with roster cuts.

There was some chance that it might've been Pickett to be the starter.  But once he got hurt and was 'down' for so long, that chance evaporated away.

Hopefully the starters get some playing time against the Rams so they can be ready for the Bengals at home....because we MUST at least split the games against our divisional rivals.

That play at 2 minutes 3 seconds into the video was epic pass pro blunder by RG Zak Zinter.  YES, he had a man lined up on his outside shoulder but when the Center had a DT lined up on his Left Shoulder - Zinter actually moved to his right at the snap which opened the Guard-Center gap even wider for the LBer (already telegraphing blitz). In that case, Zinter should have sealed off his inside with his feet/body (keeping in mind he still had his Right Arm free to assist the RT) understanding the pre-snap leverage on the Center was already threatening to widen the gap between Zinter and Wypler even further.  Having said that, I didn't see him repeat that same mistake in the portion of the video I watched.

Pre-season is just as important for shaking off mental rust.  I doubt Zinter is a dumb football player when his national championship teammates voted him a team captain.  Then again, I'm not always the brightest apple in the orchard.

Yeah...I've noticed that, so far, IMO, he shouldn't be out on the field when we're playing live games.
