Tale of the Tape - Browns vs Bengals
-
Battle of Ohio Part 1. One of my Must Win games (like a 1st game of the season is ever a must win).
These are last season's stats. Flacco has no ties to our passing stats shown here.
In reality, the Bengals have only been good at passing. And not good at much else. We have a chance at winning this opening day game...so let's DO that!
We have a new OC & OL coach. We won't be running the same offense as last year. We can only hope that our OL benefits from these changes because as a unit they struggled last year. And so much of offensive success is rooted in the success of the OL.
Initially, I don't see the running game being greatly improved over last year with Judkins in limbo right now...unless the OL improved substantially. I do think that Dillon Sampson is an improved piece of the RB room over last year but I don't see him as a bell-cow.
In theory we'll have better QB play this season with Flacco at the helm.
The WR talent on the team is at this point an unknown. Thrash shined in the preseason...but we've seen that not translate to the regular season with receivers before. Tillman showed signs of 'next level' last season...but we're going to need more than just 'signs'...and we're going to need him to stay healthy. (I don't see the helmet covers being a thing that receivers would want to wear as concussion protection) We also have guys named Gage & 'Out On' Bond who haven't played in a regular season game yet. - Perhaps Flacco (and the OL) can make the receiver room look good!
Njoku got a partner in the draft. That can't hurt us any.
On Defense, we lost a starting CB. That has a domino affect throughout the secondary. The remedy has to come from the DLine.
In theory, again with the In Theory, our D should be good enough to get us to the playoffs....maybe even good enough to win a championship. But Defense Doesn't Win Championships...unless the Offense is good enough to get them into the playoffs.

I have this feeling the Bengals are going to fall into a funk this year. I believe we beat em opening day 27-24

It’s a work Sunday for me so l’m going to miss it. I’ll be lurking in my phone when time allows, checking scores and checking the haps here.
Go Brownies!

Good summary. I really think the Browns take it to the BenGals
BenGals actually do have a good RB ( Brown). Stop him, and as crazy as it sounds, force Cincy to throw.

5.5 point spread most vegas books. Browns getting the 5.5.

On the app I use, the point total is also at 47 which I plan to parlay on the over. Could easily see this game getting close to 30 points each side. Even with Hendrickson back the Bengals overall defense appears bottom 3rd, and even if the Browns put up a great effort points are likely to be scored. I saw an interesting tidbit that in 2023 over the 6 games Joe started the total points per game averaged to almost 54. Obviously that was a different team and time, but the core of what Flacco was doing is still there.
I do think the Browns have a shot this week if Flacco doesn't give throw too many INT's. Football is back!

Irony there Bob? His first name even tells opponents what to do. Let's hyphenate that last name to Chase Brown-Down.
Lol....little known fact, I've only drafted one hyphenated player in fantasy football: Donovan Peoples-Jones.
The day I sat him he returned a punt for a TD.
No more hyphens for me!!!

Yeah, he disappeared it seems. I thought they traded him to the Lions. He's on the Saints now.
I always thought he was solid. Maybe the lack of separation at the LOS hurts him.
DPJ? He was one of those guys that really shined in camp yet when the season started he was more like a CB's dream receiver. Good for a couple of catches a game. He was cut during final cuts this season. As said, he's on the Saints now...but he has no 2024 stats.

Speaking of ex-Browns wide receivers, Amari Cooper has decided to retire.

His best two consecutive seasons were in Cleveland.
I'd say his performance spiraled out of control rather quickly.

He had a really good connection with Flacco. I wouldn’t have been upset if the Browns would’ve taken a flier in him considering the overall shape of the WR unit, but it’s a moo point at this point. A cow’s opinion.

I will always be thankful to him for taking Josh Gordon's name off of our single game receiving yardage record.

He was the only Browns receiver to post back to back 1,000 yard seasons too.
I just dissected the 2022 trade with Dallas to get Cooper. We gave up a 5th and we swapped 6ths.
The result ended up being we got Cooper and WR Michael Woods II, and they got OT Matt Waletzko and LB Devin Harper.
All 3 of those drafted guys just got waived with injury designations about a month ago from their respective teams. Woods by the Browns, Waletzko by Dallas, and Harper had made his way to Pittsburgh.
So everyone involved in that trade is out of football right now.

And that's why NFL stands for "Not For Long".

WR Michael Woods II
He was always injured. At some point you've gotta part ways.
