Stefanski gives up play calling

The Browns Board

  •  At this point, it's clearly a method used by Stef to show that the playcalling in and of itself isn't the largest issue.

You might get a temporary "win one for the gipper" boost.  Especially against a bad Jets team.   But once you toss out the highs and lows, the median will end up being around the same.

  • Definitely makes you wonder if there's a little heat coming from the owner's box To do this two years in a row is definitely not an ideal look.

Maybe a little, after all he wants to sell tickets.

Unless the locker room totally blows up in the next two months, they're running everything back in 2026.

What's he going to do differently?  Run on 3rd & 7?  Or...Run Run Pass Punt?  Run Run Run Punt?   Unless you move the Punt up in the rotation what does it matter the order of the plays?  There's nobody open 'cept maybe a TE.  There's no holes to run through.

Tillman has been designated to return to practice from IR.  Perhaps he plays against the Jets.  That'll help a little bit.

You'd handle the 2025 Browns better by asking Jesus to turn that water into wine.??

  • Well.. I guess I'll just accept this as a Victory Monday of sorts...

  • It's a season of experiments.  I like the idea of Stef being free during games.  It's a chance to see how Reese does in brand new role for him.  And it might appease people momentarily.

I think last season it also was a "Well you wanted me to gut my offensive coaching staff well let me show you how awesome Ken Dorsey is" and pretty much let him hang himself.

For entertainment reasons, I guess I'll be looking forward to this week's game just out of curiosity to see what the offense looks like under someone else, but I think you're right, at the end of the day it probably won't matter. Same things goes for when Sanders takes over for Gabriel eventually. A bump in interest, but minimal overall change.

There is the probability that it gets worse with Sanders...but I'm looking forward to finding out.  ( we're an underdog to the Jets...... )

I should have gone this weekend to visit my family in North Jersey, my cousin is a huge Browns fan (from NE Ohio originally) and we could have scored two tickets to this game in East Rutherford for next to nothing.

  • Maybe hire someone you feel comfortable with calling the plays - that’s obviously not the case the last two seasons.

My cousin is a huge Browns fan also.  From the days of Jim Brown.  And we've always lived in New England.

When you're losing...anything you do is deemed wrong.

  • Interesting. A lot of fans are wondering if Rees is going to be fired like Ken Dorsey was.

Stepanski is boring, and doesn't have the instincts to fool defenses. We'll see if the offense production gets upgraded. It will be tough with the offensive line not being up to par. NOBODY is talking about trick plays. It's a matter of play design, and play calling to keep defenses guessing.

    Tillman will be back, apparently.

I'm done with Stefanski TBH. His offensive design schemes are outdated and unimaginative in today's NFL. Looks like he was propped up by AVP and Callahan as offense dropped off a cliff with their exits.

back in hs, I was a stat guy with a friend for football. It was as close to the game I could get. Every play, we'd write down the formation, the play, player numbers, result of the play. It got so I could predict what they were going to run by how they lined up, and the stances of the offense - qb/rb/ot.

Stepanski's offense seems like that. But it is worse - the drafting for offense.

Look at the first round draft picks for offense.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Cleveland_Browns_first-round_draft_picks

2020 - Jedrick Wills, OT, blah.

2018 - Baker Mayfield, but should have drafted my pick, Josh Allen

2017 - David Njoku, who took years to be a dependable ball catcher. duh.

2016 - Cory Coleman, midget wr.....

The Giants released Corey Coleman, providing proof once and for all what a mistake his selection was for the Cleveland Browns.

2015 - Cameron Irving, C. Injury prone throughout his career, floated from team to team, position to position. nope.
2014 - Johnny Manziel. dammit, how stupid a pick that was.
2012 - Brandon Weedon. another dismal mistake.
2012 - Trent Richardson, considered one of the biggest draft busts in history
    2019 - Alex Mack, C, a star

Hardly a way to build a dynamic offense. Then there is the play calling. Your offensive line is struggling, getting overrun by the Pats defense and you call a flea-flicker? etc etc.

What is really hopeless, is the Browns offensive line, which is not helped by stepanski's inability to adapt to what is going on in a game....

    #32 Browns offensive line.
per ESPN, Browns wide receivers - 25th in the NFL.

Don't worry about the neighbors Nicks - you can't hold that talent hostage.  They'll get over it!
