5 QB’s In The Room

The Browns Board

Obviously there were empty seats at the Jets game.  That's what our home games are going to be looking like.  But if you announce the Monday morning after the loss to the Raiders, whatever remaining available seats will sell and there will be a full house for the game.  The 'bump in interest' could spill over to the next week against the Titans where Sanders will be playing in the, #1 Pick In The Draft Bowl.

Funny you bring up the Titans, because I was thinking about a scenario today and you just might be the person to ask this:

The scenario is the Titans and Browns end up #1 and #2 in the draft again. I can't see Tennessee drafting Mendoza obviously, so how much would you give up to move up to #1 overall to ensure no one jumps the Browns and takes him?

Would you give up the Browns other first round pick (#19 overall today) to make sure to get Mendoza?

The current 2026 draft value chart shows that the #2 pick plus 400 more points would be enough to move up the one spot.  That would mean our 2nd round pick should be enough.

But before looking up the chart I said to myself, 'I would fight tooth and nail to keep the Jaguars pick'.   I would trade it along with our #1 but we would have to be a bit further down the  draft order.

But there's a lot we'd need to know first:   Did we find out that neither Gabriel or Sanders is worth pursuing as a #1 QB?

Is Mendoza all by himself?  Will other QB's prove to be worthy of a high #1 draft pick?

You know me.  I want a tall QB.  If my people (scouts, etc.) told me that Mendoza is the real deal, then I'm sick to death of evaluating QB's every winter.  I'm sick of not having a chance because of the QB position.  I'd do almost anything I had to do to get him.

We had the great Jim Brown when we last won a championship.  But it was the QB and Receiver combo that scored all of the TD's in that last championship of ours.  I'd come out of the 2026 draft with Mendoza, a couple of OLinemen and a couple of WR's.  Because I'M FUCKIN' SICK OF IT!

Unfortunately, the Jets now have TWO 1st round picks in 2026 + THREE 1st round picks in 2027 + TWO 2nd round picks in 2026.  My guess is whoever holds the 1st overall pick will be aware of this.

Right.  The Jets are our royal PITA team in terms of the draft.  They're in crazy mode.  They're liable to throw the kitchen sink at the #1 pick holder.  I don't know that we want to get into that kind of a war.  The easiest way is to lose out.  I bet that gets us the #1 overall.

We've got a couple of what would be called winnable games coming up against the Raiders & Titans.  But our offense is so pathetic that we would really have to play a perfect game to beat the worst teams in the league.

The ironic thing is that the rest of the division keeps coming back to us.  We're only 3 games out of 1st place.  And we play them once yet.  The division title is still within reach.  And yet I wouldn't be able to find a sane person that would think we'd have a snowball's chance in Hell...

I honestly believe that the ONLY chance we have at winning the division is by putting in Sanders at QB for the very next game.  And this is ONLY because we can't say for 100% certain that Sanders won't be the better QB.  This particular group of offensive players that we trot onto the field every week requires the QB to carry them.  I think that we've seen that it's not going to be Gabriel at this point in time...and truly it's unfair to expect a rookie QB to be able to do that...but it's what is required to save the season.

Right now we need a QB that has shown the ability to make things happen.  To make plays.  And to make plays out of nothing...that would be more up Sanders' alley.

Thanks - well said!  We CAN keep losing to earn that final spot; because we're currently defending 3-14 football with 2-7 football.  We've been in check mate for quite some time now. Any meaningless streaks now doesn't change the problem at QB while it could save 1 or both guys (Berry and/or Stefanski) in "save-my-ass" mode.

It would be nice to see what Sanders has at this point though.

Here’s the kind of surreal thing about Gabriel: after his first five starts, he has a touchdown to interception ratio of 3.5 touchdowns to 1 interception.

I’m in no way saying he’s playing well, but that is a true statement. If someone had told me back in August that after his first five games he’d be 3.5 touchdowns to every interception I would have been one giddy guinea.

Yeah but he has so many bad throws not even the defenders have a shot at it because our WRs get no separation.

Good research!  He also had a completion % of 72.9 at Oregon last year.  Pretty much any recent starting QB at Oregon has been successful - ie; Bo Nix, Dillon Gabriel, Dante Moore (this year 14 TD passes 1 INT 69.2 comp% record 8-1).  That means Gabriel was in a program that understands how important the edges of pass pro & running game are to today's game. Any wonder why Cleveland has been an absolute culture shock for him? There's been a shit show running this team (and I don't care how much people want to tell me about this year's draft.

If we are going to count college - Sanders had a 74% completion rate with 37 TD to 10 INT last year.  The difference is he didn't have another prong of attack to lean on or provide some sense of balanced attack. Here's a cut and paste from Goggle showing where Colorado's running game ranked while he was there:

Just baffling how they thought Gabriel was better than Shedeur. If they didn't like Shedeur on initial grading they should've just not drafted either one and  stuck with Picket using that top 100 pick on a lineman or WR. Now they've been trying to prop up Gabriel from day one after realising what a mistake they made, stealing first team reps from even Flacco and the super processor they fraudulently announced was actually a x486 from the 80's rather than an Intel core processor.

Well...not exactly true.  After the draft Stef stated that he & Berry were watching Gabriel's tape and Stef asked, "Where does his height show as up an issue?".   I'm sure they did research on him.  And I had read that there was another team going to draft him before the Browns next pick.  We'll take that with a grain of salt.

As much as I want the taller Sanders in the game....Gabriel, for a rookie 3rd round pick, has NOT played terrible...with a weak surrounding cast.  He has not been a turnover machine (although he's had a number of INT's dropped by defenders...but that happens to all QB's).

I watched an All 22 of the game...and did he not see some receivers that were open or coming open?  Yes.  He's a rookie.  The NFL game is fast.  Did he make some bad throws?  Yup.  But he's made plenty of good throws too.  -  And the All 22 showed what he has to put up with from the OL......guys coming unblocked...guys not sustaining their blocks...bad OL communication...etc.  But Yes, sometimes the OL was good and Gabriel moved the wrong way in the pocket, or didn't take advantage of the good protection to go through enough progressions.  These can all be attributed to being a rookie.

One can find stats to suit anyone's argument I'm sure...Gabriel's completion percentage isn't great...but it's better than last year's #1 overall pick QB.  It ain't easy being a rookie QB on a bad team.

I've predicted that we won't see Sanders at QB until the 49'er game.  And though I've praised Gabriel here, he has not shown to be a guy to carry an offense.  Sanders played with a bad OL & running game.  He had to carry the team.  He had to make things happen.  So I think he should be put in right now as a last ditch effort to save the season.  But Stef is married to him since the draft.

Your screen name reminds me of an old adventure in college when I drank MD 20/20.  Tell you what, if you drink that stuff - all our QBs will look good.

I had 2 different Draft Mags that projected Shedeur for round 1 (Athlon & Lindy's).  Athlon & Lindy's had Gabriel projected for round 5.

The Browns got Gabriel in round 3 and Sanders in round 5.  Even more interesting is now they think Gabriel is 6'0" so they're listing him as such.

As fate would have it, they honored their intuition/plan 1st - and they'll just throw Sanders out there without worrying how prepared/ready he is when it's time to do so.  Right about now, my guess is Berry and Stefanski are thinking they need to be right about Gabriel in order to keep their careers going in Cleveland... Unfortunately, I have no reason to think they give a shit about Shedeur until I see one...

Which explains why the pesudo analytical front office chose him, they watched the stats instead of the player. No one else had a 3rd round grade on this backup.

I was baffled then and baffled now.

An OLineman or WR would have been nice there... (Then again, Berry's track record selecting WRs in the draft isn't stellar)

I was speaking metaphorically, they obviously watched the tape but gleaned the wrong information from it and relied on stats instead. If they watched the tape with a critical eye it would be pretty obvious there had to be a lot of scheming at the college level to open passing lanes for him with his height limitations. How would that translate to the NFL, where everything is so much faster and those lanes would be much more difficult to attain?  Plus even PFF ranked him amongst the lowest FBS QBs attempting passes of more than 20 yds so I wonder which stats they were looking at. People who do this for a living had a 4th-5th grade on him but our brainiacs wasted a top 100 pick on him.

True.  And has he done any better at OL?  His best pick may be a guy that hasn't earned a starting job yet (6th round pick Luke Wypler).  I can see him starting at Center or OG in the near future.

Berry should have left when Depot left. Totally missed the OL boat their entire time here. You can't win without going inside out.
