5 QB’s In The Room

The Browns Board

Your screen name reminds me of an old adventure in college when I drank MD 20/20.  Tell you what, if you drink that stuff - all our QBs will look good.

I had 2 different Draft Mags that projected Shedeur for round 1 (Athlon & Lindy's).  Athlon & Lindy's had Gabriel projected for round 5.

The Browns got Gabriel in round 3 and Sanders in round 5.  Even more interesting is now they think Gabriel is 6'0" so they're listing him as such.

As fate would have it, they honored their intuition/plan 1st - and they'll just throw Sanders out there without worrying how prepared/ready he is when it's time to do so.  Right about now, my guess is Berry and Stefanski are thinking they need to be right about Gabriel in order to keep their careers going in Cleveland... Unfortunately, I have no reason to think they give a shit about Shedeur until I see one...

Watching the Browns play MAKES me want to drink some MD 20/20

Nothing says "Welcome to Happy Hour" quite like it CD.  Watching 3 hours of depressing football can make anyone want a strong depressant or 2...

I was baffled then and baffled now.

An OLineman or WR would have been nice there... (Then again, Berry's track record selecting WRs in the draft isn't stellar)

Berry should have left when Depot left. Totally missed the OL boat their entire time here. You can't win without going inside out.

    Small(er) sample size(s)

But the early returns are not good.

Good research!  He also had a completion % of 72.9 at Oregon last year.  Pretty much any recent starting QB at Oregon has been successful - ie; Bo Nix, Dillion Gabriel, Dante Moore (this year 14 TD passes 1 INT 69.2 comp% record 8-1).  That means Gabriel was in a program that understands how important the edges of pass pro & running game are to today's game. Any wonder why Cleveland has been an absolute culture shock for him? There's been a shit show running this team (and I don't care how much people want to tell me about this year's draft.

If we are going to count college - Sanders had a 74% completion rate with 37 TD to 10 INT last year.  The difference is he didn't have another prong of attack to lean on or provide some sense of balanced attack. Here's a cut and paste from Goggle showing where Colorado's running game ranked while he was there:

Just baffling how they thought Gabriel was better than Shedeur. If they didn't like Shedeur on initial grading they should've just not drafted either one and  stuck with Picket using that top 100 pick on a lineman or WR. Now they've been trying to prop up Gabriel from day one after realising what a mistake they made, stealing first team reps from even Flacco and the super processor they fraudulently announced was actually a x486 from the 80's rather than an Intel core processor.

I hear ya MD; but they put their glutes on the line making Gabriel their plan in round 3.  He's gonna get the favoritism and extra chances Shedeur won't receive whether we like it or not unfortunately.

  • anyone remember this guy ? he used to make the rounds on all of our Browns message boards,Gotta love his optimism

  • Gabriel named #2 ...like anyone cares.  Just a play to fire up the sanders crowd.

Short answer, No.   Wypler got hurt at the beginning of the 2024 campaign and was out all year.  They said they liked him but he doesn't hardly play....although he's usually dressed for every game whereas it's a blue moon if Zinter is in uniform on a Sunday.

  • I've pretty much always been in Stefanski's corner...but finding out that when Sanders came out of the tunnel for the 2nd half against the Ravens, he had never thrown to Jerry Judy.  That he had not taken any reps with the 1st team.  And he was the backup QB.  The #2.  The guy who's always just one play away from playing.  Little midget Gabriel....with our ineffective OL...and the backup hasn't taken any reps with the starters?!   Well, that's just plain dumb.  And for Stef to say after the fact that, 'He was ready' (to play....in other words, Prepared), well, how could he possibly have been 'ready'?  That's an obvious lie.

Obviously, to Stef, Sanders was the bastard son.  Which is unfortunate, disheartening...and frankly, aggravating.

From what I've seen of Sanders this year (which isn't much) he does too many things that aren't right.  He turns his back on the LOS under pressure.  He scrambles holding the ball with one hand, waving it about while gyrating.  And he probably isn't great at reading the D or going through the progressions.......but I hope he goes out there and throws for 300 yards, 3TD's and brings the team back to Cleveland from Vegas with a 'never in doubt' win!    Now, it's the Browns, so that won't happen.  But if he's been the bastard son of the QB room...then the football Gods should intervene.

You know me, I want the Browns to lose the game for better draft positions in each round.  But Fuck That!  I'm pulling 100% for Shedeur!  (nothing against Gabriel...'cept he's a midget)    Sanders has been a good team mate...and has not shown any indication of sour grapes...which someone of his celebrity-type stature could've been using the media attention to his benefit.  Good Luck Sunday Shedeur.  A lot of people want the fat lady to start singing.  Fuck That!  Start a Legend!

Stefanski put a lot of pressure on himself making Gabriel the plan in round 3 when it was blatantly obvious only Jimmy and his son-in-law wanted Sanders.  Shortly after my positive 1st impression of Sanders (preseason game vs Carolina) - I got an uncomfortable vibe (remembering the plan).  The LAST THING Stefanski wants on his resume is almost as smart as Jimmy Haslam at sizing up NFL QBs - and I'm not just talking about the difference between Sanders at 6'2" and Gabriel at 5'7".

The vibe?  That game vrs Carolina (in spite of the flaws we saw) was the last time we were going to see Sanders look that good.  Now, for the intensified efforts to remind our fanbase Gabriel was Stefanski's choice in his 1st preseason start.  They made sure he had a good 1st preseason start; and I don't remember any deep throw hook-ups beyond a lot of dink and donk.  Fair or not - right or wrong, I got a feeling someone that could control/manipulate how well the QBs do in a game did so. Consequently that would make sure his guy outplays Jimmy's guy (Sanders) to the extent he could prove to Jimmy why his guy got the nod via film comparison.  As we know, Stefanski's fanny is already on the hot seat. This is only me thinking as a fan not an expert in any way.  Again, that could be REALLY wrong but this is our owner's trainwreck overall. Just remember, we're talking about 2 rookie QBs.  Sam Darnold took all the way up to 2024 (from the 2018 draft class to look like a 1st round pick); so one of these guys could take a lot longer than the other to emerge. That fact that we're all still here hoping for the same result Virginia got when there was serious doubt there was a Santa Clause. I have 2 conclusions:

    1. YES Virginia - there is a Santa Claus; but SORRY Cleveland - he's a huge Pittsburgh fan. ?

    2. We're all here; because we're not all there...

? No need to apologize for the 'midget' moniker unless I lose a mouthful of cold beer reading it.  Still possible; but that'll be more my fault than your's.

I don't want a short QB either.  the irony is if the the 5'7" QB is standing in the same room as the 6'2" QB - yes, that ceiling will be higher for the shorter feller.  Having said that, using bigger ceiling in this QB comparison - countless paid draft analysts had Sanders rated higher than Gabriel.  That was just comparing football skills and perhaps the body frames of each WITHOUT looking at the elephant in the room - Shedeur's dad.

I normally don't care what Colin Cowherd thinks but he had some good perspective about how Deion Sabotaged his son's draft status.  Apparently he made his rounds at the Super Bowl within the last 2 years stating what types of teams he didn't want drafting his son.  As you can imagine, the chronological order of the draft is often set by the records of all NFL teams.  Most of those teams Deion was mentioning/describing needed a QB (and they were drafting where Shedeur could have been selected).  They all avoided Shedeur because they didn't want to deal with Deion - and rightfully so (even though he hasn't caused any problems in Cleveland that I'm aware of).  The shame of it all is Shedeur had a 74% completion percentage - higher than anyone else (but the next closest guy was actually Gabriel with 72.9).  Both started for more than 1 college football program. Shedeuer started 4 years while Gabriel started 5 years + another 6 games in 2021.  Shedeur's OC at Colorado was a former NFL OC & HC. Regardless of people's opinions of Pat Shurmur - he had some success as an OC for the Eagles when he was Chip Kelly's OC (and they led the NFC in scoring and went deep into the playoffs).  Marshall Faulk was another offensive assistant coach there so there wasn't anything leading me to believe the NFL Game - especially Stefanski's offense - was going to be too complicated to understand.  Reading defenses from pre-snap into the progressions is going to favor the rookie getting more coaching and experience with the 1st unit imo.  Worse of all, this organization proved Deion right with its OL and OTs in particular aside from a WR Corps that scares 0 opponents.   Who can get open immediately if/when no blocking upfront warrants a quick pass?  Nobody.

I have some notifications, one was a mention in this post.  Don't see my handle, but I've got a few spare minutes between meetings to chime in.

Didn't have to be that way.  Sanders was QB2 (not by much, but enough) coming out of camp.   PS Game 3 is where things got flipped.   Gabriel and Shedeur were given 8 of the near exact same passing plays.   Dillon connected and distributed better, despite being less physically capable.

There were absolutely shots down the field taken.  Like you said, they didn't connect.  Actually, the one, as I gave the detail of in my Dillon Gabriel video, amounts to "far sail" and was almost another INT.

The coaching staff didn't insure that he looked good.  But he was proficient and decisive at the things he's strongest out - short to intermediate throws, mostly aimed at and outside the numbers

Stefanski isn't wrong in wanting to suppress any of Jimmy Haslams influence on the roster though.   The man hand-selected Johnny Manziel.  That should have been an immediate 20 year embargo on any roster input.

Circling back around to what I mentioned above, when Sanders and Gabriel were handed a crop of the same/similar plays and personnel, Dillon showed out as the superior QB in the face of live pressure.

Darnold is far above what he used to be.  With that said, he still has a penchant to absolutely sink an offense with questionable decisions when he's asked to perform as a high level passer. (see last week)

As you stated, neither of the Sanders' have been the problem that everyone feared.  Although it's probably because  of what everyone did to them...which was to Stay Away.
