Shedeur Sanders
-
The other day I watched the Browns/Ravens game with tia. Watching Shedeur from the All 22 viewpoint - from behind the offense - really showcased his lack of fundamentals at this point of his career. (I honestly was shocked and at one point said to tia "I can't believe he had so many college starts")
He doesn't take his steps back in the pocket, set up and get in position to make a quick throw. He just kind of wanders back, almost aimlessly. He vaguely gets back to what one would think is a seven step area, but then just keeps drifting back, with the ball at his side... You can tell that he vaguely looks downfield at first, but at the first hint of pressure drops his eyes down at the mass of big men in front of him. With horrible footwork, bad set up and wandering eyes its kind of a mess.
I hope I'm wrong, but it could be very ugly Sunday afternoon.
I suspect Sanders has more difficulty than other guys absorbing new information. When a guy picks things up quickly, we call that guy a “quick study.” When a guy is the opposite of that, we used to call him “slow” back in the day. I’m sure that’s not a PC thing to say, but l think it’s at the heart of how a guy with plenty of arm talent slid to the 5th round because every coach and GM picked up on it.
I’ll root like hell for the guy, but l think this is the behind the scenes conundrum that Stef and the gang are working with.

Understood & I'm rooting for him too. Another thing that appears to be brand new to him is not starting or a need to compete with guys that are either equally good or more experience (ie; Flacco & Pickett prior to both getting released)
I was hoping playing for a former NFL OC who's offense in Philly led the NFC in scoring would have had him showing up with better habits. That same coach was a previous HC of the Browns that also wanted to call the plays. I HATED it but the point is - he was a better coach for other teams than he was for the Browns. Hmmm... I was hoping this would be more of an advantage for Shedeur than it has been thus far. I'm getting tired of this dejavue to the right: I WUZ WRONG!!!
Anyway, just like Gabriel, Shedeur is a rookie. He's gonna get out of it what he puts into it. What that article by Hoyer didn't say was Tom Brady didn't start 1 game his rookie year; but he did play in 1 game where he completed 1 of 3 passes. All we can do is hope both our rookie QBs realize knowledge & preparation don't just begin when it's your turn to start like Hoyer alluded to in that post. They have a position coach & the OC, they had a veteran QB above them, they have meetings, there's film of the opponent showing tendencies - plenty of opportunities to ask questions. You only get out of it what you put into it so.... GIDDY UP AND GET AFTER IT!

Officially named the starter for the SF game so let's see how does with better competition. Schwartz has Shanahan's number so he'll get some help there.
Officially named the starter for the SF game
Well, now the stadium will be full and rockin'. For a while at least.
I think it's a good idea. The plan was to give him some starts sometime before the season was over. (a few weeks back I had predicted the 49'er game) Although Stef probably wanted to go a little longer with Gabriel, since Sanders had to play last week...and the team actually won the game...for continuity's sake, this might as well be his audition period. How long it will last will depend on how well he plays...and to some extent, whether the team wins or loses.
The circus is coming to Cleveland this Sunday at 1:00

also another week with the ones and more of a game plan for sanders also
Sanders played a kind of a nice game his first start. I see, imho, a few problems he has to overcome despite that - a bit of a mental clock problem, and a little bit of lead feet until he gets going. With experience, if he can get past those, it will be interesting, but watching him a lot in college, it was there, too. We all hope he shows improvement. Fannin is now the #1 TE per their depth chart - no surprise here. He had 4 catches, 40 yards, ran the ball once for 4 yards. He's an amazing, smart guy.

what I liked from last week, Was he stepped up in the pocket and threw the ball away if need be and only took one sack

OBR's take on what is possible for this long suffering franchise.

Yeah, that sums it up nicely: Still the most likely scenario is us trying to draft Mendoza...but Sanders has a chance to change that.

Again, this isn't just my opinion - many of the draft analysts (including McShay for quite a while & Kiper) plus the 2 draft mags I purchased all had Sanders as a 1st round QB from a talent standpoint, amount of starting experience, accuracy throwing depicted in his #1 comp % in college football. Not only that, his OC at Colorado was an OC & HC in the NFL (Pat Shurmur) dating back to when he was the OC of the top scoring offense in Philly.
The major worry/flaw beside the tendency to hold onto the ball too long and get sacked was his dad. When he did the Super Bowl rounds telling people he didn't want his son to play for certain types of teams - guess what types of teams needed to draft a QB? That sabotaged his son's draft status IMO but I know a lot of people shared this thinking...
I would be ECSTATIC if Sanders got the chance to be the QB he is capable of becoming. We've seen some good signs while we understand the work to be done needs to continue 1 week at a time.
My dream is for us to not need to draft a QB (EVEN MENDOZA) so we can draft the obvious things we need.

Could you imagine the absolute zoo it would be here if Deion Sanders was named head coach?
It would soooooo be a Jimmy Haslam move.

Oh my! It so would wouldn't it. Now I'll be waking up some night in the middle of that nightmare.

One of the local guys yesterday on The Fan suggested the idea - because he thought it would totally be something Jimmy would do - and now I randomly break out in a cold sweat anytime I think about it. ?

? Are you saying it hasn't been one?
Tell you what - he'd be our best punt return man right now if Jimmy hired him as a Head Coach & Player Coach.

This might be my favorite thread this year. Just when I thought nothing could be more outrageous than Jerry's Palace in Dallas - Jimmy gets a wild hair up his ass that he wants Deion stylin more gold on the sideline than any of the local jewelry stores have combined.
Stay tuned? If ya haven't lost us yet - you ain't gonna...
