    Follow me.

I’ll humor you…Two most important components of football in 2026 1. The passer 2. Affecting the Passer (getting after him and protecting him.

We partially agree but we have a core difference.   I agree we are bad because we can’t block and we can’t catch the football and sometimes we can’t throw the ball.  And I’ve said a few days ago we are repeatedly in this cycle not just because of the things mentioned above but because we repeatedly fumble the gift we are given over and over again picking at or near the top of the draft.  You take elite talent I say gold jacket type talent at or near 6 overall.  If there is a tackle that emerges as gold jacket type talent that should be the tiebreaker between say Caleb Downs and unknown elite tackle.  Take Elite talent over good talent.  Even if good talent quenches the largest thirst.

Having said all this in different way again. I said Downs at 6…but maximizing positional value of picking at 6 I wouldn’t take a WR, QB or OT but I’d trade back and grab preferably a tackle may consider a WR.

where did we draft Bitonio? Where did Buffalo draft Teller?  Mitchell Schwartz wasn’t too shabby where was he drafted?

If we need a center sometimes it isn’t wise to force it and take a cam Irving or tackle and take Jed Wills.

The draft can still be heavily (and it should) invested in OT, G and WR spots

Thanks!  Nice job with clarifying where you are coming from on this.

We're still going differ on what needs to happen with our 1st pick overall; and it is mostly due to the tiny supply of LTs in this draft. It's no secret that a limited supply on a big demand of certain positions often has us watching a run on those positions that puts BPA in the back seat until that run is over. We see it almost every year. IMO, this draft won't be any different so if a team wants any of these LTs: Caleb Lomu (Utah) or Carter Smith (Indiana) or Trevor Goosby (Texas) or Isaiah World (Oregon) or  Austin Barber (Florida) or  Kadyn Proctor (Alabama) and I know I missed 1 or 2 - they better grab their guy quickly.  The following guys some sites are listing/leading people to believe they're LTs but only played RT in 2025 are Ben Miller (Clemson), Spencer Fano (Utah), Gennings Dunker (Iowa) so make sure you double-check these guys.

Now to answer your questions. The Browns drafted Nevada Tackle (Bitonio) to play Guard in round 2 at the 35th overall pick (and he's frequented Pro Bowls).  Teller is an OG that Dorsey made a trade with Buffalo to acquire and he has also frequented Pro Bowls here. Schwartz was a RT they drafted in upper 2nd round at #37 overall.  Joe Thomas was drafted at #3 overall - he was drafted to play LT here so he went very high being the best one in his draft class. After starting his career with a 10-6 record in Cleveland he made the Pro Bowl 10 consecutive years and landed in the HOF. Now for the Alabama RT the Browns drafted at #10 overall to play LT here - he actually had a solid rookie year and the Browns went to the playoffs with an 11-5 record and beat Pittsburgh. After that season, he had nagging injuries and just never looked like he returned with any desire or passion to continue to build on the rookie season. That picked turned out to be a stinker - especially knowing Tampa drafted Wirfs at #13 overall. (I already provided how many Pro Bowls he made at Right Tackle & Left Tackle as well Super Bowls/playoffs played in earlier in this thread).  The team that did it's homework on OTs got the better guy 3 spots after the unnecessary knee jerk from the Browns.

When the Buckeyes got dominated by Miami on the line of scrimmage - did the greatness of Caleb Downs matter more to the outcome of that game than the line of scrimmage?  That line of scrimmage was so disruptive Justin Sayin threw 2 INTs, was sacked 5 times and pressured all night.  None of that is a knock on Caleb because I agree he's a great player and what that dynamic at Safety can do for the secondary; HOWEVER it's a reality that nothing else matters if you can't block on the line of scrimmage.  That said, when you can reliably  block for the running game or protect a passer you can help control time of possession and with scoring points in the process.  This allows our defense to rest more than it was able to in 2024 and 2025.  I'm sticking with getting our 2 Tackles and WR within our 1st 3 picks then going BPA the rest of the draft.

If the OT positions don't get upgraded - we're used to disappointing offense in Cleveland so at least we'll be very experienced watching the inevitable pretending maybe next year 1 more time...

You can fix the problem without picking the OT at 6.  I’m trying to say this but is coming off as nonsense?

You guys are hellbent on picking a prospect that might be 18 or 20 on most boards because we need it.

For instance you can trade back increase your assets for 27 when we may need a passer.  Or add some draft pieces to increase the depth at OT, G and WR in Day 2.

If the Browns need OTackles & a WR most - the players in these positions the Browns scouts, coaches & GM rank highest should be our 1st 3 picks that will all be completed by pick #38 overall barring any trading back.  Then they can go BPA for the next 5 rounds.

When you go grocery shopping do you put things you need on the list?  Or, the things most of your neighbors need and have on their lists?

You're talking depth on positions the Browns need starters at.   I thought I mentioned in 1 of my replies in this thread I'm not opposed to a slight trade back for an additional pick.

You wouldn't be replying to either one of us if the Browns haven't been so negligent to the OL.  We can think of excuses to keep blowing off drafting OT & an early round WR forever.  It's non-competitive football right now.  Supply and demand isn't always compatible with what the Browns need in order to compete.

Every week the discussions are the Browns can't block anybody and the WRs can't get open (except Bond) and no matter who played QB even Flacco - people weren't happy.

Pass Pro on the edges has to improve.  That simple.

That was my last post on the subject.  It's okay to disagree.  I have no idea what they will do.

No, you're stating it fine.  I'm just saying that until you start drafting OL or WR, the W/L record won't get any better.

I'm the owner and I say to my GM,  When the 6th pick comes, if we can't trade out, will there be an OLineman or WR that could come in and start, day 1, and thus make my team better?

In regard to grocery shopping don’t send me….if there is a rib roast on sale I’m buying and going home and putting the chuck roast I bought in the freezer for another time

  • I'm of the view that we should address it starting with the off season hiring of free agents to address these two areas well before the draft so it can be used to augment needs still needing shoring up through BPA. This is what we did with the D and it clearly needs to continue on the O side.

And that's a good idea for WR and/or maybe RT.  But last year the Browns did sign a journeyman FA OT in his early 30s (Cornelius Lucas) and that wasn't the answer at all.  Lucas started at LT for Washington on the blind side of a rookie QB that became NFL Rookie of the Year.  That said, Washington didn't even try to keep him making him available for the 1st team that thinks about OT the way the Browns do.  Why that?  Because their plan was to trade with Houston for LT Laremy Tunsil whom they got (and overpaid); and then they drafted Oregon LT Josh Connerly Jr whom they started at RT in 2025.  IF Tunsil was playing like a keeper for the $ in Houston - they don't trade him.  In fact, Houston (not possessing a 1st round pick) used a 2nd round pick on Minnesota LT Aireontae Ersery who beat out projected starter Cam Robinson (yes the same guy who wore #68 for the Browns late in the year).  Houston will be moving on to the 2nd round of the playoffs after beating the Steelers 30-6.  The desperate Cleveland Browns went after Cam Robinson and he couldn't move to save his career.  BUT he was a 2nd veteran FA LT the Browns signed.  Lucky for him, Berry probably thinks he pacified Browns fans that don't understand bad performances from OTs have a lot to do with poor QB play.  Last draft saved Berry's career in Cleveland because he should have been fired.  He's the one that traded away all the picks so obviously the Owner only thought Stefanski needed to be fired.  It's a sequel that keeps on giving.

All the guys that want Caleb Downs at #6 can rest easy unless he goes before then.

It will sound like I’m arguing against my point (which I sometimes do) I don’t think we will find a LT or RT in free agency that We can afford and has more ability than what we can pick at 24 and/or the top of the second round.  Maybe a quality guard or center in FA but not a good edge protector.

So while I’m a Caleb Downs guy (right now) I am not opposed to trading back and scratching the right/left tackle itch or making that pick at 24 and/or in the second.

  • The issue in regards to BPA vs need becomes more complex with the situation the Browns brass has put themselves in.

When you've allowed the deterioration of an entire position group, to the point the OL state currently is; unless there's serious traction in Free Agency, you've almost set yourself up to HAVE to address the position group if there is 1st round talent available.

Sadly that might mean passing on a player as talented as Downs.

THANK YOU!!!!    This is what I've been saying.

Our OL & WR groups are rated at the very bottom of the league.  It's impossible to win games consistently.

First comes free agency.  See what you can do for the positions there.  Depending how much you can get done there dictates what you HAVE TO DO in the draft.

Yes, the Safety might be very good.  But if we can't block or catch, then he can't help the W/L record.  ( Sadly )

    Be careful…Don’t make two mistakes.

Staying at 6 what tackle are you taking?

    Does LT or RT matter?

Does “he project as a guard at the next level” matter?

First comes free agency.  See what you can do for the positions there.  Depending how much you can get done there dictates what you HAVE TO DO in the draft.

Yes, the Safety might be very good.  But if we can't block or catch, then he can't help the W/L record.  ( Sadly )

    Be careful…Don’t make two mistakes.

Staying at 6 what tackle are you taking?

    Does LT or RT matter?

Does “he project as a guard at the next level” matter?

    We need both.  (at least)

If after your evaluations, Combine, Pro Days, Interviews, tape watching, tea-leaves reading, etc. ...and you're on the clock....is there an OLineman or WR available that can step in and start, day 1, and make your offense better, then pick the one that you grade the highest.

IMO, that's how we make the W/ L record better.  And that's all predicated on what we were able to accomplish in free agency and whether we wanted to trade out but couldn't, or not.

If Jones can get healthy and get back to LT, it matters.

and "projects as a guard at the next level" only matters if it is definitely true.

He's definitely the type of Tackle Dan Campbell is proud to have!  Very good example to use Cal and he's actually a RT in the NFL after being a LT at Oregon - maybe I need to flip my Utah Tackles to Fano at #6  and hoping Lomu kick slides back to us in the 20s.

Oh, you're not done?  Good, I like prioritizing biggest team needs with your constructive feedback. It's working a little.  For example, I think I can be a little more flexible with what order we draft these 3 biggest needs within rounds 1 & 2 in the sense I could go RT first/LT second/WR third. The cool thing is if BPA is the only way to go for everyone else (including the 8 or 9 other teams needing new HCs today) - there will still be very good prospects within the 3 biggest needs.

Me:  Aren't they telling us what's preventing this team from winning so do something about it in a place(s) you can get your version of the best? The best should all be on our door-step if the rest of the NFL is following BPA only.  Again, if we can get the BEST RT first - I don't have to stay stubborn to the LT 1st only considering the Browns have another 1st round pick.  Then I think there's still going to be damn good WRs available at the 6th spot in round 2 (#38 overall).  Or trading back where best applicable to ensure these are the 3 priorities.  The Browns went BPA last year and we have 5 wins to show for it.

Here's a discussion similar to what we've had with BPA vrs biggest needs (inclusive of options on how the Browns can land them):

I'm not a big Kadyn Proctor fan at LT - like the write-up said he gave up countless QB pressures against Florida State because he doesn't have the lateral movement/agility/footwork for the blind side pass protection.  That said, I think he can be the next Nate Newton at OG (w/o open space to his left or right in pass pro) going John Deere Tractor on DTs in the running game.  We're gonna need at least 1 OG in case the Browns draft him for LT and realize he was born to be an NFL Guard.  I wouldn't like this guy as our 1st or 2nd pick - but I think I found how he could be more useful if the Browns did daft him.  Hopefully we have a good OLine Coach that can provide some input on prospects prior to the draft.

ah I see now you will take a right tackle. Would you take a right tackle at 6 if they project a little better at guard?  That might be the next step for you.

I just watched four middle aged guys talk about trading down for 10 minutes because we shouldn’t take a future guard and how the draft is void of talent at 6 for tackles.  Granted the first two minutes were you can’t take a defensive player but then it was quickly what is left in the scrap heap.

Have I not been critical of the offensive line talent at the top of this draft?

Have I not said I like Tate but not at 4 or 6?

Big one have I not been a big proponent of getting the hell out of the 6 spot?

I absolutely hate the idea of squandering an asset.  Something we do far too often and in this case taking a tackle because you need a tackle at 6 is doing that.   I’ll give you another idea….if he’s available at 6 draft downs and trade him ala AJ Brown/Treylon Burke or Eli Manning/Phillip Rivers.  But Taking an elite defender is not squandering an asset unless we want Ronnie Hickman to start or we are prepared to pay massively next offseason for Delpit.

Now I’ll concede my position when some tackle wows us at the underwear Olympics and shoots up the board RT or LT and interviews well and checks the medical boxes.  Will Caleb Lomu be that guy?  Or is he middle of the road starter?

Im having a hard time using 6 right now on a projected guard.  When we have 24 and 40 which is seemingly a place where the OT talent (in this draft) should reside according to talking heads

Edit: and do I look like I’m done lol

So take the WR at 6 then.  He won't help the run game by blocking big fat guys, but he attacks our other huge need.

Oh Stop! ? You know you were doing good until that last line above. It's not that I really want to take a RT but I'm starting to see more of the RTs are getting Top 10 Love.  Per that sarcastic jargon in bold above - JMO, I don't think Fano or Mauigoa project better at OG just because a few Draft Analysts are worried about their arm length (that's why they were moved from LT to RT anyway). I think those are the 2 projecting highest although Bama's LT Kadyn Proctor has been projected as high as #6 in a mock draft on WalterFootball.com but I see him as the next Nate Newton at OG with a teammate on both sides of him instead of the open space at LT.  I don't want to use a 6th overall pick on that so you don't have to worry about it being my next step.  - Flugel

Yeah because we didn't already have any 1st round picks in our defense like Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward, Mason Graham, Devin Bush and Greg Newsome II (before the trade) so of course we can pretend our OL was terrific to add Caleb Downs to the 3rd tier of our defense at #6 overall. He can really help us win by neglecting any/all prospects protecting the edges that killed this team in 2024 and 2025. We can play pretend a 3rd year in a row as the way to go; because some people conveniently forget this when they're worried about squandering an asset or 2 or 3 later on. Moral of the story - neglecting the line of scrimmage perpetuates losing no matter who could be playing some adorable Safety in the 3rd tier of the defense... - Flugel

- You

You poor thing. Do you get like this every time you don't get your way?   I have ZERO to do with Berry neglecting the OL in 2024 and 2025. I wanted a Tackle last draft and the Browns went BPA the entire draft except for the QBs.  So yeah, now we need at least 2 OTackles plus an OG. But, hey look at all the winning we celebrated via BPA not squandering assets.  Come on brag to me about all the scoring and winning we did.  - Flugel

Now I’ll concede my position when some tackle wows us at the underwear Olympics and shoots up the board RT or LT and interviews well and checks the medical boxes.  Will Caleb Lomu be that guy?  Or is he middle of the road starter? - You

In other words, you haven't watched him play before your tantrum.  2nd year starter as a red shirt soph at LT on the OL described in this cut and paste:

How's that?  I'll say it again, I'll take Fano at #6 and Lomu later in the 1st round and snag a talented WR 6 slots into round 2.   If it's gonna hurt your feelings too much I'll pray we can get Lomu are someone equivalent in the 6th slot of the 2nd round instead.      - Flugel

Im having a hard time using 6 right now on a projected guard.  - You

I answered this above.  But, I've only been looking at a lot of film of OTs and reading about them; and there's not a lot of LTs at the quality we need so supply and demand had me over-reacting some I'll admit.  As I said, I'd be okay with Fano or Mauigoa at RT at #6 and as long as we draft the LT with our 2nd pick of round 1. You have yet to name this tackle that's gonna play OG: but I appreciate you needing to re-context the truth because a couple Bleacher Report Teenage authors are excited to worry that RTs arms only 33-34" long could be kicked inside.  That's why both Mauigoa and Fano were moved to RT in the first place. - Flugel

When we have 24 and 40 which is seemingly a place where the OT talent (in this draft) should reside according to talking heads - You

    You'll be okay I promise! - Flugel

Edit: and do I look like I’m done lol - You

    I told you - you'd be okay. ? - Flugel
