  • An old black and white thriller. Jimmy Stewart, Ward Bond, Robert Young, Robert Stack.

It's about a pre-WWII German village, and how a prominent family gets devastated by the rise of

nazism. The acting is superb - the impending and overwhelming nazi dedication shows up quickly,

with young men joining the nazi party and military with great zeal.

It also shows what happens when some refuse to dedicate themselves to that vicious movement.

It Germans were not 100% loyal to the nazis, they were enemies - political arrests, beatings, threats, their

power and "law" was dominant quickly.

For me, it was hard to not see a similarity to the leftwing movement here in our America today.

I will watch this movie again - recorded it. The film is loosely based on the novel of the same name.

"The film is based on the 1937 novel The Mortal Storm[6] by the British writer Phyllis Bottome, who had moved to Austria in 1924 when her husband Alban Ernan Forbes Dennis was posted there. Dennis was a British diplomat and an MI6 station head with responsibility for Austria, Hungary and Yugoslavia. In 1930, she moved to Munich. She witnessed the rise of fascism, the rise to power of the Nazi party and the transformation of Nazi Germany."
