I got home from a medical procedure around 2:30pm.  Turned on the laptop, and was out of emoji's without even using one.

Hope you're feeling better!  Yeah, I felt I gave out a lot more kudos yesterday than I did today so it caught me off guard today.

WELL SAID Bob!  I ran outta cyber thatta boys or you woulda got one here.

It's the way Berry and Haslam do business that continue to show the rest of the league why Jimmy's team is where it is at today.

That is one of the quirks on our board....I'm usually out of those upvotes by 9am lol.

Yeah, it appears they did Schwartz dirty. I doubt it gets patched up damnit

? Per the part in bold above.  It's easy to do in a good topic.  In lieu of wasting some on the laugh emoticon - we can do the same thing snagging a laugh from the tool bar above.  After getting haunted by the Ghost of Christmas Past last month - it also seems more like laughing with someone than at them.  I've been re-thinking my fondness for Shakespeare...

  • This isn’t a move that is going to do a lot to excite the Browns fans. I get it.

But he is a guy whose last year as a college head coach was very successful, then helped transform a Georgia team from a defense first program to one that was explosive enough on offense to win two national championships, then helped Lamar Jackson become a legitimate passer in the pros, but the last year was a struggle.

He’s kind of the anti-Kevin Stefanski. He’s brutally honest and can rub people the wrong way. He’s never going to be considered a “players coach”.

Being  "brutally honest", being able to navigate tough topics & conversations, doesn't/shouldn't preclude one from being a players coach.    You don't have to look far, right down the road to Vogt, for a great example.

  • With some reflection I'm fine with the hire. It's now revealed that Schwartz was going to leave if he wasn't given the HC job no matter who was hired. In that case better to hire Monken than some offensive assistant and to be frank Monken is a bit of a proven offensive genius. Because he's relatively old (compared to the Ben Johnsons, LeFleurs, etc) he's been overlooked but he could be the next Bruce Arians. Excited to see what he'll do for our run game (literally resurrected Henry's career), TE's and even QB. He made that Georgia QB who won the national champ look like an All American.

It would be somewhat telling if Stefanski didn’t take him…maybe they didn’t see eye to eye on things?

  • It was fun watching the comments go from “nooooo” to “eh, maybe?”

i don’t know enough to have an opinion on Monken, but hey, he was willing to take the job and that’s something. Baltimore typically has a pretty good offense too.

    Funkin’ with Monken.

Count me in as one of 'em lol

after actually learning a little about him I'm good now

  • I think I understand.

Andrew Berry was hired on 1-28-2020.  So Jimmy wonders how things might be different had he hired Monken right then, when he hired Berry.  So he walks out to the garage, gets in his DeLorean he bought at a comicon in the 80's, sets the date, and turns on the flux capacitor.  Poof!

I wonder at what point today he realized it wasn't the car from the Michael J. Fox documentary?

  • I don't mind the Monken hire.  He is a proven OC who seems to be able to rev up a O.  I don't like how this went with Schwartz.

I would seek to trade Schwartz, assuming things can't be patched up, raise Tarver up to DC which could make things stay the same on D, at least as much as possible.

I have no idea what we could get by trading a DC?  Maybe a 3rd?

I wonder if the Browns can afford to do a buyout of his contract

  • I'm really trying to be optimistic about this Monken hire.

He turns 60 next week. Bruce Arians was 60 when he got his first head coaching gig.

I'm sure they didn't at times. It could also be Stefanski knew Schwartz wanted a HC gig opportunity.

If Schwartz leaves, the Browns D will make adjustments to the new coaches scheme. I'm not ultra-worried about it now.

Kind of off topic, I wouldn't mind seeing another speedy, tough LB on the D to complement Schwesinger & Bush.

With proper care of health (diet, exercise) & healthcare tech in the NFL, 60 really is the new 50.   Pete Caroll looks like he's 10 years younger than what he is.

Remember - wear out, don't rust out.

It is a concern.  Especially if the new coach brings new language & structure.

Sure, especially on language. The structure is bound to be somewhat different, but my hope would be since the offense needs so much fixing, they will most likely ride with the players they already have.

I don't envision many new starters on defense. Stay healthy & adapt to the new DC?

  • This coaching search was so pants on head retarded.

Jimmy liked Schwartz enough to impose him on the young coaching candidates who said no thanks. So instead, they hire Monken, who is a less experienced Schwartz, and slap Schwartz in the face by doing so and now he won't be coming back. After leading the only unit on the field worth watching last year.

I prefer Monken's experience over Schellhasse, but not at the cost of the leader of our defense.

  • So apparently the Ravens wanted to draft Sanders but he told them not to.....I guess that explains this hire more than anything else.

Monken will have had input in that draft process so I am assuming he has told the FO and Haslam's that we can succeed with Sanders

I don’t either but once/if we get this offense clicking we are likely to be in a position where some of the starters start to show age and we get priced out of some players (Delpit) comes to mind.  We were all focused on offense this year and its issues…my mind kept wandering to the the fact that the offense is at least a two year rebuild and if that happens will this defense remain playoff caliber.

I don’t think Sanders had anything to do with this hire.

Monken could work with him he fails and our investment is so little it doesn’t matter.

Now I’m not trying to cause a stir but Watson….Monken could go really far getting something out him and tailoring some offense to him…that again had probably very little to do with him being hired.

...an off topic response 🙂   Devin Bush is a FA.  Berry needs to sign him up.

Watson is probably the biggest benefactor from this coaching regime change.  All he has to do is prove that he's the best QB on the roster through this whole offseason through cut-down date.  Assuming Monken comes in with an open mind.

I could be wrong, but Schwartz’s defense seems to have specific attributes needed for their DLine. I’m worried that someone new comes in and say Mason Graham is now a bad fit.
