Sure, especially on language. The structure is bound to be somewhat different, but my hope would be since the offense needs so much fixing, they will most likely ride with the players they already have.

I don't envision many new starters on defense. Stay healthy & adapt to the new DC?

I don’t either but once/if we get this offense clicking we are likely to be in a position where some of the starters start to show age and we get priced out of some players (Delpit) comes to mind.  We were all focused on offense this year and its issues…my mind kept wandering to the the fact that the offense is at least a two year rebuild and if that happens will this defense remain playoff caliber.

  • So apparently the Ravens wanted to draft Sanders but he told them not to.....I guess that explains this hire more than anything else.

Monken will have had input in that draft process so I am assuming he has told the FO and Haslam's that we can succeed with Sanders

I don’t think Sanders had anything to do with this hire.

Monken could work with him he fails and our investment is so little it doesn’t matter.

Now I’m not trying to cause a stir but Watson….Monken could go really far getting something out him and tailoring some offense to him…that again had probably very little to do with him being hired.

It would be somewhat telling if Stefanski didn’t take him…maybe they didn’t see eye to eye on things?

I'm sure they didn't at times. It could also be Stefanski knew Schwartz wanted a HC gig opportunity.

If Schwartz leaves, the Browns D will make adjustments to the new coaches scheme. I'm not ultra-worried about it now.

Kind of off topic, I wouldn't mind seeing another speedy, tough LB on the D to complement Schwesinger & Bush.

...an off topic response 🙂   Devin Bush is a FA.  Berry needs to sign him up.

Watson is probably the biggest benefactor from this coaching regime change.  All he has to do is prove that he's the best QB on the roster through this whole offseason through cut-down date.  Assuming Monken comes in with an open mind.

I could be wrong, but Schwartz’s defense seems to have specific attributes needed for their DLine. I’m worried that someone new comes in and say Mason Graham is now a bad fit.

I'm really trying to be optimistic about this Monken hire.

He turns 60 next week. Bruce Arians was 60 when he got his first head coaching gig.

With proper care of health (diet, exercise) & healthcare tech in the NFL, 60 really is the new 50.   Pete Caroll looks like he's 10 years younger than what he is.

Remember - wear out, don't rust out.

I'm not sure if it was his age or the hopeless situation of the Raiders; but this was the first year I've seen Pete Carroll looking mentally overwhelmed all season. That'll slow and tire an old feller out.

That said, could he be a short term solution to our DC situation or perhaps Sean McDermott?   The PROBLEM with waiting this late to hire the HC is that a lot of promising Assistant Coaches for Coordinator positions have already been hired. Hopefully Monken knows a guy that's got a guy who knows a guy...

I'm sure a bit of both.  Raiders, like the Brownies, have an OL + QB problem.  It drags everything else down with it.

McDerm would be an interesting shift.

Pro - he drafts up some simple, yet well versed, coached & designed coverages.  Especially his 2hi designs this past season.

Con - his Dlines play a lot of 'sit & get'.   So the movement us Browns fans have been accustomed to the past 3 years on the Dline, the stunt & twist rates, would generally be lower.    Of all the people that hurts the most would be players like Maleik Collins & Devin Bush (any undersized LB, really)

Yeah I suppose that is a possibility, but the addition of Graham & Malik Collins helped the Browns rush defense out quite a bit. When Collins went down with an injury, it was noticeable.

All these coordinators will see things a bit different throughout the league.

Mason Graham on a rookie contract is a pretty good deal. As long as he stays motivated (we could say that about almost any NFL player) he's fine.

It's funny, we are so scared & damaged as a fan group, many of us wanted change, yet here comes the change and we're still scared?.....they should bring in the Case Western Reserve University psych department in lol.

Yeah, multiple D positions can be affected by a new DC and a new scheme.  High draft picks can end up as bad fits.

Not to open up a sore wound for discussion or argument…Just keep Joe Woods 1000 miles away from Berea.

    Not crazy about that.

If I were Schwartz I’d be on the phone with the 9ers and vice versa

  • I'm not railing against Monken...but if they'd have hired Schwartz then the D would've stayed very much the same.  even if he named somebody the DC.

But we now know that Haslam preferred an offensive minded HC.  I get that.  It's a league where you need a good offense.  This year was a prime example of how far a really good D could take you while having a really bad O.

  • @ballpeen said:

I don't mind the Monken hire.  He is a proven OC who seems to be able to rev up a O.  I don't like how this went with Schwartz.

I would seek to trade Schwartz, assuming things can't be patched up, raise Tarver up to DC which could make things stay the same on D, at least as much as possible.

I have no idea what we could get by trading a DC?  Maybe a 3rd?

I wonder if the Browns can afford to do a buyout of his contract

    @nickers said:

Coach contracts don't attach to any salary cap numbers. We could afford to pay him.  Since Schwartz seems to have walked out, we don't have to pay him anything.  We hold him for a year if he ever wants to coach somewhere down the road.  I doubt we would do that.

IMO, assuming he doesn't coach here next year is we will trade him and the other team takes his contract, or we reach some sort of buyout agreement with him and his agent, be it some sort of settled monetary agreement or his simple release with no compensation. Both sides would agree to simply void the last remaining year of the contract.

That is why I would advocate that Monken seriously considers elevating Tarver to DC.  Tarver has been a DC in the NFL before. Tarver might add a bit more of the things he likes, but he is probably smart enough to not fool with terms and the basic structure of the D.

But that is putting the cart before the horse. We will first have to settle the Schwartz situation. We need to do that quickly.  We have a bunch of assistant coaches who have no idea if they have jobs or not.  This is prime time staff filling season.  Our guys don't want to be in limbo.  They don't want to be stuck on the sidelines while other teams fill roles they might hope to get.

Makes sense - the way Jimmy does things is very offensive.  One of the guys on the Pat McAfee show was saying he power plays Berry without letting Berry know what he's thinking before doing so. The problem with all that is the time Berry/any GM commits to something good communication from owner either makes that process doable or a waste of time. I rarely factored that in when venting my frustration about Berry. Haslam has to be one of the most difficult owners to work for and trust...

Yes, Senior Bowl week is sliding past us.  Hopefully Berry's got scouts there evaluating, but it would be nice to have the HC there watching...but he's probably too busy trying to figure out what Jimmuh is going to let him do as far as hiring his own people for positions.

I hear ya.  I'm guessing at least the scouting staff will be there and maybe Berry.

  • I hope Todd Monken is the guy.

I hope Shadeur Sanders is the guy.
