We used to have politicians who at least tried to curb it, and there have been attempts to balance the budget in the past, but it’s been a while and it never lasted long. I’ll post some highlights. There was a window in the Clinton era, and there was the post WWII Truman era, and before that was the gilded age when we still had people driving horse and buggies.
There’s plenty of info out there on how the deficit has grown and how much interest we are paying on that debt. As l said, there isn’t enough support on either side of the aisle to make a difference on it anymore. Republicans simply overspend on things they value, and democrats do the same.

The board used to have varied, intelligent, informed opinions across the political spectrum. The uprising of Tea Party to MAGA, linked to a steep decline in discourse, drove out almost all other opposing viewpoints. It would be easy enough to track on here and is a small example of the decline in political discourse across the country.
