  • Illegal immigrants make extensive use of welfare. Based on government data, we estimate that 59 percent of households headed by illegal immigrants use one or more major welfare programs, compared to 39 percent of households headed by the U.S.-born.

We’re generating an albatross of national debt.

The U.S. has been in debt for 237 years, welcome to 2026.

We’ve made good steps as far as the environment is concerned.

This I agree with, and I hope it continues.

Our work towards education is mixed.
We have one of the most expensive education systems in the world, yet the academics don’t show it. ?

Sure, mixed results on the education front. I have no doubt it’s expensive and l’m generally ok with that. That’s how we invest in our future. I would like better results too.

Womp womp waa. At least Jax read it (maybe) and was interested in food stamps.

Last time l looked into it food stamps (or SNAP benefits) was a relatively small portion of the federal budget. I just did a quick comparative analysis, and that’s still the case.

SNAP benefits cost about $1 billion a year. Definitely not insignificant. However, a B-2 Stealth bomber costs $2.1 billion per unit, so for the cost of half a stealth bomber, we can feed all of our poor people.

I know it’s the chic thing to do to get down on poor people as a drain on our society, but it’s a really small drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things.

I’ve shared this before, but l grew up poor, single mom with 2 jobs and all that shit, and she still relied on food stamps to get by, and l’m eternally grateful for that and have put in the work to pay it back, and l think l’ve done that tenfold by now and still working at it.

The last thing you want is desperate people living among you. I truly believe that. It’s not pretty and it bears plenty of shame, but government assistance programs like SNAP curbs desperation and helps people get on their feet, and that’s worth more to me than half a stealth bomber.

Further, the welfare cliffs have created an incentive for people to stay below the poverty line to maintain these benefits - because if they make too much money, they lose this benefit but don't make enough to cover their existing expenses. There's a viral video this week of a woman crying because she got a job but lost her section 8 housing benefits and she feels punished for trying to do the right thing. The government has screwed up the incentives here.

Unfortunately, a large number of the people using it are scabs who aren't trying to do the right thing like this woman did. There are a bunch of videos going viral of middle-class Indian immigrants where they are bragging and making videos explaining how to get free food from food pantries and how it saves them money. The whole system needs to be rethought because certain populations will take full advantage of it with no effort being made to improve their lot.

Illegals are absolutely contributing to the decline of the American working class via supply and demand. Minimizing this problem is a huge blind spot of the left. My landscaper was pissed because he hired a legal Mexican guy to help him get on his feet. This Mexican then opened up a competing business with a bunch of his illegal cousins. They offer to mow a lawn for $30 a pop, and the average American landscaper simply cannot compete with that. Americans are rightly pissed about them being here.

I’m aware of the “welfare cliffs”, and l get both sides of the conundrum. It’s a big ask to expect poor folks to make significantly more money to make it more rewarding than not to be off assistance, and from the govt’s perspective they obviously have to draw a line somewhere. I heard a decent idea about that, where instead of making people instantly ineligible for benefits, start a downward sliding scale where they get weened off over time. Regardless, l think it’s a necessary thing to maintain a civilized society.

I actually don’t fault middle class people for taking advantage of food pantries. I used to volunteer at one and honestly time, not supply, is the biggest limiting factor. I assume every city is a little different, but food pantries around me is an incredible network of churches and other non-profits, grocery stores, restaurants, and other food producers, and the amount of food that comes in is an embarrassment of riches. We couldn’t get it in hands fast enough. Literal truckloads of apples, potatoes, entire pies, Panera bread, etc. So much of it spoiled before we could find takers.

And honestly, food pantries get some swanky stuff that not everyone knows what to do with. Delicata squash, exotic juices, and paneer cheese comes to mind. Those Indian immigrants are probably among the few who can put paneer cheese to good use.

I'm going to have to strongly disagree with you there on the level of blame placed on illegal immigrants. Even in a world where their existence is causing the issue having the SS round up any vaguely Hispanic individual, throw them in a concentration camp, and then deport them without due process isn't solving the root cause of the issue. If you're bleeding into the floor cuz your leg is cut open wiping up on the blood on the floor doesn't solve the issue. Politicians, mostly lawyers, don't do shit to resolve root causes. Maybe because surface level blame games are better to rally the base. Maybe they just don't get it. I wouldn't blame illegals. I'd blame our immigration system, the business exploiting them, etc.

Even then, I'm placing the blame on those in power and policies leading to an ever growing wealth gap in this country. It isn't left vs right, it's top vs bottom. Democrat elites are responsible just like Republicans. Wedge issues exist to keep the masses distracted. Much easier to point at a "lower" class and tell people they're causing all of your problems. Blacks. Muslims. Immigrants. Trans people. Etc. Yes, the Dems have blame, but there's clearly more blame to the right at this point. Go on stage, say "transgender" a few times, whip them into a frenzy, and then give you and your rich friends tax cuts. I won't dig into the people falling for it, either being gullible, victims, idiots, or all of the above.

I'm not worried about illegals. I don't fall for the rage porn our MAGA friends consume. I'm more concerned about getting justice against the Epstein class and reworking the policies in this country leading to a widening wealth gap, increasingly unachievable financial goals for the youth, and a general sense of helplessness for younger generations.

Weren’t you just razzing me about the overuse of the term “word salad” like a week ago? I agreed with you, lol.

I get what Woody is saying. There’s a culpability factor greatly contributing to the “illegal immigrant problem” that’s coming from higher up on the food chain. There are enabling forces that came from high up, and in a sense many of those immigrants are victims of the specter of opportunity.

It’s kind of been our dirty little secret for a while now, for decades actually. We saw the “mismanagement” of the border under Biden, but was it really mismanagement?
