The False Appeal Of Socialism - Hoover Institution

Authoritarian socialism is lethal because it brooks no dissent. In every implementation of authoritarian socialism, individual freedom has been irrevocably compromised for a utopian and unattainable collective idea. The sheer number of failed socialist experiments raises unavoidable questions about politics, economics, justice, and human nature.

I got through about half of it. It’s a PR piece, that’s for sure. Another good topic htown.

My position is we’re all on the train, and we have some degree of steering it, but only so much.

Whatever economic system we steer towards has to show clear opportunity for younger generations growing up in it. If they can’t see it, then this is the sort of thing they will gravitate towards.

I grew up poor and carved out a living in our capitalist system. It’s all l know. It seems harder now than when l was younger.

it’s largely on the current administration to make it crystal clear that there is still opportunity under the current system. Of course they gotta work for it, that’s how this works.

But if younger people can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, we might be fucked.

I don't know what you could say to the young people other than the truth. Global economics are shifting to something we have no historical reference to, but no matter what comes out the other end this country will still be leading the world. There will be opportunities, it's just hard to say what they will be now.

But I would hope they understand that making everything public property means you will own nothing. Everything will become a slum because there are no vested interests.

The thing about countries that are communist/socialist is there's no room for failure. You will become what society needs you to become. Your skill set doesn't matter as much a necessity. And if you don't comply there will be hell to pay.

They’ll figure out the truth of it regardless, but what l hope gets impressed upon them is the hope of opportunity much like we had growing up. I’m admittedly a little out of touch with younger generations. I have a 20 something kid and her friends as personal reference points, but l also get pings of apathy here and there and l don’t fully know the lay of the land with how younger generations are processing their prospects in the world.

I think that’s the lynch pin in all this though and l think it would behoove whoever is in charge to make it a focus. Otherwise l fear we’ll have a younger generation that is out of sync with us older folks and they will seek change that makes us older folks a little uncomfortable, and they will eventually have the numbers to steer the train.

  • I’m going to fess up and admit l have no idea what Pareto distribution means. I’m pretty nerdy, but you guys might be nerdier. Keep it up, l appreciate it.

I’m attaching an AI screenshot for my own purposes and anyone else who wants to follow along. It’s only so helpful, but it’s a start.

Whenever you see text like this, you know you’re in to some nerdy shit.

  • kids tend to be easier to deceive emotionally on issues - they just don't have the experience in life to benefit from. The one help is if parents can communicate value system aspects of issues to them, and have them learn history on subjects, especially American history.

But so far too many public schools are failing - some of them fail because they have an agenda that doesn't include simple teaching of math,

    history, physics, simple economics, etc.

Those admin/teachers tend to have personal issues, and they try to deal with them by teaching students in terms of their own weaknesses. Those teachers got into the profession for the wrong reasons, obviously.

These two are the highest ranking members of the DSA national committee.

As I watch interviews of this committee I will post them in this thread.

    Well, not quite.

United Federation of Planets is from Star Trek.

The other flag is from a cartoon called One Piece....similar to Pokémon.

But yes, the guy is formerly a climate activist.

  • I stumbled across this interview where the man suggests grad employees and professors from Columbia University and the University of Michigan are major influencers in this "movement". Hmmm. It's at the 23:00 minute mark, but the whole interview is interesting.

I watched the interview with Megan. You gotta hand it to her that she more often than not directly answers questions, which is refreshing after seeing so many politicians dance around questions without giving a direct answer.

Nonetheless, l can’t see this utopian world she describes without cops and prisons, and how all the problems in the world can be accomplished with social workers. It sounds nice, but l don’t think it’s practical.

I also don’t think the average person wants the added responsibility of having a say in the means of production.

They'll tell you exactly what they want, but they seem oblivious to how stupid they sound. "We'll tear it all down and the committee will vote later on how it will be rebuilt" is child's play.

The way they speak as if everything will shift slowly over time from capitalism to socialism, it's as if they believe there will never be another election after they gain control.....

Her statement about sending an army of diplomats to settle the Russia/Ukraine war was particularly “come on now…”

I don’t know who vibes with messages like this, but l suspect it’s younger people who aren’t optimistic about their prospects in the world. I already said that though, so l think all any of us can do is watch how it plays out and dig in to the numbers if the DSA starts pulling a respectable amount of support.

There’s not a whole lot of DSA politicians at the federal level as of now. AOC and Rashida Talib is basically the whole list.

I would prefer to keep reminding people of how dumb this is, everyday if need be, before it becomes a problem.

I hoped young people would read up on global economics before they go full "Lord of the Flies", but here we are.

  • There are a bunch, however relatively small, that FEEL that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence.

But let them learn history of socialism-->communism, and that would change.

It's kinda like they grew up in the city, and FEEL that the grass is imperfect in Louisiana and there are mosquitoes, etc, and they FEEL that if they

could just get everyone to jump the high fence, everything would be far better, far more wonderful, and free stuff would fall like rain drops.

Then, they jump the high fence, and land in 8' of swamp water, quick sand, alligators and cotton mouth snakes.

But then, it's too late. "Tear it all down, build utopia" sounds like a Star Trek show.

BTW, years ago, we mentioned that the dem party was just starting to lean socialist in some of their policies, and it was laughed at.

    Not a funny matter anymore.

Yeah it went from a few socialist policies to full blown socialism pretty quickly.

People who claimed to be centrist around here certainly never were.
