Ok, well I was wrong on them cutting DW loose.

Somewhere in one of the sports TV shows they explained how much costlier it will be in terms of the cap than to just cut him than to let him play out the last year of his contract. None of that shit makes a bit of sense to me, but maybe someone who understands it all could explain it.

Here is an article explaining it, but damned if I understand it. Seems like mumbo jumbo, but it also explains why I said follow the $$.

I'm with you, this business side of the NFL salary cap isn't "fun to learn." We're all just (angry, confused) fans.

It's really really hard to give the Browns any credit at all for kicking the DW salary down the road, perhaps this was the only way to get it done.

Me, I look at it in football sense. They drafted 3 QBs in 2 years and choose to bench them all in favor of this "veteran" who is polarizing as hell.

We're all tired of the "tanking." Tired of the mismanagement.

It's supposed to be " Pro Football," instead it's an accounting firm. WTF.

It's exhausting Bob. When Watson told Cleveland that he had narrowed his choices down to a couple other teams (and Cleveland was not included) - Jimmy wanted to buy the NFL version of Crypto and nothing was going to stop him. Buyer beware did not apply so extensive reseach of "what could possibly go wrong" was never researched.

Does anyone REALLY think the young QB below (Josh Allen) with his rookie and 2nd year stats below would have kept Jimmy Haslam patient if the Browns drafted him? This OWNER has never understood so people always say - "he's willing to pay big $!" Big flippin deal. Randy Lerner was too and what did that get us? They HAVE to pay the big money they are obligated to. Now here's Baker's rookie year here for a team that began the year 0-1-1 after it went 0-16 the year before and 1-15 the year before that. In his 3rd year the Browns went 11-5 and won a playoff game at Pittsburgh. Granted he had a soph slump and played injured in his 4th season so the numbers dropped; and the FO & Owner decided this guy isn't worth keeping for a 5th season. They just erased 4 years of investment in coaching/training a young QB in the deal to get Watson. Someone already posted all of the specific draft picks this caused the Browns to miss out on over 3 years. Is Jimmy his own/our biggest problem with finding the right QB to develop and lead this franchise to a Super Bowl?

  • @flugel I hate to admit this, but I am really pissed off about them not cutting him.

All the crap we've put up with since 1995, this takes the grand prize. My excitement for 2026 is totally gone.

I still say, no OBJ, we wouldn't be here. It was an unnecessary gamble that destroyed a truly great up & coming team.

We all could list our sad grievances, at least we have great, distant memories of good football. Our younger fans have only witnessed a couple good years. In a league of parity, what an abysmal failure our favorite team is.

I got the impression OBJ was a cancer in the locker room too. I think he caused an unnecessary friction between Baker and Landry. I also think he was also envious that Baker was the one in that market getting all the commercials/endorsements opportunities. It wasn't the NY/NJ market that brat should have ever left.

My golden era as a fan was the 80s with Sipe & Kosar QBing the Kardiac Kids. I'll live with and survive heart-break endings after watching so many regular season games they won by erasing deficits in the closing seconds. Too bad we didn't have a Myles Garrett back then...

The Browns have been a fun family tradition that I'll cherish forever. If I live long enough, maybe I'll get to see this team win a Championship in Brook Park. I was in diapers the last time the Browns won an NFL Championship in 1964; so let's hope I'm not in diapers the next time they win the Championship...

  • Joe Thomas:

“[Todd Monken’s] gonna make decisions on what he feels is best for the franchise to win today. When he has worked with these quarterbacks throughout the offseason, he’s looking at his offense. He wants a guy that can take the play at the line of scrimmage, see the defense, get to another play quickly. He feels like that is Deshaun Watson as of today. There’s context that’s involved in Todd Monken’s mind: what he’s seen throughout training camp, what he’s seen in the meeting rooms. In the preseason, there’s just not much of the playbook that you put out there,” Thomas said.

Joe's a football smart guy. And probably smart in general. He was at TC multiple times this year helping the OL. Monken wanted him to stay. But Joe doesn't want to commit to an every day gig...which is what coaching is. He's a family man. And he's got a nice little gig commentating. It's the team's loss that he's a family man. He's a 1st ballot HOF'er who never jumped ship. The #73 jersey with his name on the back only comes in 3 colors. Seal Brown, Orange or White.

  • When JJ McCarthy gets cut...we should pick him up, he will fit right in.

It was a few years ago, he was with Justin Fox, and he was to be leaving the show and he said something like, Yeah it's time. I'm heading back to NY and do something a little bit different.

I remember an interview with him during his playing days, it might have even been on the sidelines of a preseason game, but he was talking about how competitive the NFL is and how it's so hard to beat a team. He said, You can be sailing along in a game thinking that you're going to win and all of a sudden a couple of things happen and you need to get down the field fast and score the required points to get the win. He said, A team has to have a QB that can bring you down the field, kind of Carry the team to victory. He said, you can't run yourself down the field at the end of a game or the half. You need the good QB.

I remember thinking, There's no flies on Joe Thomas. He gets it. It doesn't matter how good your LT is, how good your running game is, if your QB can't bring the team down the field to score the required points, you're not going to be a consistent winner. - I wish he was working for the organization.

Yeah, sadly Joe's words still hold true for us.

Watson's presser where he explained why he hates Cleveland fans has put the organization in a difficult position. The fan base that already disliked him is now infuriated. They're taking it out on the Haslams as signage on the Jim Brown statue indicates. If he trots on the field with the starting offense at our home opener you know the offense (by association) will be booed loudly. And that footage will be played on every media outlet able to broadcast at least sound.

    That scenario would be unprecedented.

So, what do you do? You can't have the fans decide who your starting player(s) have to be. Obviously, Sanders did not show that he's equal to or better than Watson or he'd have been named the starter. It's a tough spot to be in. You either hope that he plays lights out and the team romps in FL. Or you hope that he sucks royally such that he gets demoted after 2 games. Or lastly, you call that guy named Knuckles and you tell him that Watson cannot leave FL without a broken leg.
