Guys, I've been a Browns fan for 70 years of my life. I finally learned to not get emotionally involved in Browns wins or losses- the losses will be many this year. Can we have another 0-17 parade? Really glad I dumped my season tickets. That performance today can only be described as a CLOWN SHOW. Horrible in every way. I've seen enough great qb play after just one game to say Watson SUCKS. Unless by some miracle- I can say this guys is the most overpaid bum in the NFL. washed up more than a beached whale. Told the guys everyone should do a shot for every interception Watson threw. Didn't take long, did it? Didn't help that the defense played like crap either. Penalties galore. I actually dozed off the end of the 4th quarter. ?

I turned the game off, had to clean the grill

  • that didn't take long.

after being projected at #28 power rating,

    the Browns are 32nd.

worse than dismal. All that talent, new coaches, changes....

    same old qb crises.

That's the 'fan' view...from 5000 feet. But Monken is not trying to lose. He's trying to win. And he thinks that Watson gives him his best chance. Monken won't allow himself to think like that until he knows that he can't make the playoffs....which of course, is waiting way too long in the 5000' fan view. It's not easy being a HC. Your fired or not fired based on how many wins and losses you get. Not on setting up your franchise for a high draft pick which will benefit the team in the long run.

The Browns are NOT going to win with Watson now or in the future. Monken has 2-3 years. He better find out if he can win with the other 3 QBS in the room. Watson will not be here in 2027

I hear that. And I agree almost 100%. Again though, fan view from 5000'. And that's not how you coach. You have to play the best players at each position (for the job at hand). That's what the HC owes the players. Sure, when the game is hopelessly lost you can sub in some backups to get them some playing time to see how they do. And the same holds true for the season. Once the season is lost you can give more time to backups. It's a little different if you've just drafted one of the best QB's in the draft who is to become your long term franchise QB. You'll be wanting to get him on the field as soon as you can....without rushing him in there before he's ready. So, he may go in there before he's technically better than the current veteran starter. (Sanders was drafted in the 5th round)

So, at this point in the season (the very beginning) the argument is about Who is the better QB. Not who is the most popular with the fans. Not who might be here next year and who may not. We're one game out of first. The new HC, with no loyalty, no ties to either player, has determined that neither Sanders, Gabriel, or Green had shown to be better than Watson.

Monken two three years? He may not last the season Orion. I heard a clip of his post game presser- and he's on some sort of drugs starting Watson again for a damn near guaranteed loss. Buccaneers -5.5, 78% probability to win outright.

A more objective look from NFL.com...

"Watson's first start goes even worse than expected. Deshaun Watson's selection as Browns starter defied logic, and his performance Sunday only made reality more frustrating for Browns fans. Watson threw an ugly interception on his third pass attempt of the season, routinely appeared overwhelmed by the speed of the game and a pass rush that eagerly feasted on his unusually long pass drops, and frequently missed his targets even when free from pressure. His only high-quality throw of the game came in garbage time, when he launched a deep ball to Denzel Boston for the rookie's first touchdown. Sure, the Browns didn't help themselves (11 accepted penalties for 75 yards), but in any other scenario with any other team, there would be no reason Watson is playing. These Browns are a unique case, though, and they'll likely subject their fans to this misery again for at least one more week."

LOL, the long time astronomer in me- I can rattle off the other major stars in Orion starting at Betelguese and going clockwise.. Bellatrix, Rigel, Saiph. My Starry Night program tells me the belt stars have names too, as well as several other stars in Orion. Then you get just numbers like 47 Oriontis. And if you're out in the country away from city lights, you can make out the Orion Nebula without binoculars or a telescope. ?

The thing I wanted/want this year is for our QB's to have no excuses. But I'm about to make some:

We couldn't run the ball. Watson was our leading rusher. (Don't worry, it's only a matter of time before the backup QB is in the game. Watson will get hurt while running with the ball) We NEED the running game to take some pressure off of the passing game. That kinda' points to our newly revamped OL. And with the amount of play Watson has had in the last 3 years it might not be absurd to think that it may take a little time to catch back up to the speed of the live games.

We have a new HC. He's got a ton of NFL experience. He's got pretty much a clean slate right now. (though he should've called TO on 3rd & 2 near the opponent's goal line) And he thinks that Watson is the best QB we have right now. So, I've gotta trust him for now.

    Something, something, tank and rebuild.

The question is not "Who is the better QB," the question is: "who is the better scapegoat?" The obvious answer being Watson.

You were absolutely right that the team would have been better off doing that last season to get Mendoza, but that level of decision making is beyond this ownership and their cronies.

Yeah. He obviously did not see the underneath defender.

    Yep.

I don't know if Mendoza is going to be a franchise QB, but I'm not convinced there is anyone in the upcoming draft that will be a better prospect at this point. Perhaps by the end of the college season I'll change my mind. The overall QB class will probably be leaps and bounds better than the last two, fo shizzle, but we could already have our guy on the team right now if they hadn't won the last two games. In many ways he's the type of QB I really like - a big, strapping guy who can stand in the pocket and survey the field who is athletic enough to move around the pocket and take the yards down Field running if the opportunity presents itself.

  • Something interesting of note. Even excellent Broncos QB Bo Nix had a similar off day @ KC. He was 17 of 28 131 yds one Int early in the game leading to a KC TD, ran for 2 yds, sacked 4 times, one TD and a QB rating of 69.1 in a 31-10 loss to KC. The team had a total of 61 yds rushing with no TD.

Nobody in Denver is calling for his head yet. Nor for the HC's.

  • So far I'm not one bit impressed with Rutenberg... This passive sit and wait zone bullshit has to stop.. We were sold a bill of goods thinking we would run anything like the Schwartz system.. What I see is the complete opposite.. I see guys out of position,,, Lost and gassed out by the 2nd quarter.. Rutenberg better get it together or Jason Tarver needs to take over... Thats who I wanted to get the gig.. He's paid his dues.

That's addressed in the above video. Ward & Campbell should each be taking one receiver out. They're good at man.

Man to man coverage with a lack of pass rush is easier said than done.

A pass-rushing DE needs to be a priority this coming off-season. Verse is a solid all-around DE, but he's a great complement IMO, not a stud pass rusher.
