Can Mangini groom Joe Haden to be a top CB in the NFL
-
edit: mangini was the db coach for the pats from 00-04. that explains why he was able to groom revis so well. i don't think mangini will have a hard time getting haden on track to be a good cb.

Mangini if you ask me had VERY LITTLE to do with Revis. Revis is a athletic freak and didn't really come in to his own until this season under Ryan and even then I don't know that Ryan had much to do with it either.

How many guys have been labeled great athletes during college/combine only to fizzle out in the NFL?
I'm not saying that Haden will be another Revis and I'm sure Revis's athletic ability had a good deal to do with how great of a player he is now but I think coaching helped him out more than you want to give credit.

Revis didn't have too long to learn the NFL system and game speed since he was immediately inserted into the starting lineup on day one.
the only complaint that revis had in regards to mangini was that he was too strict on the team. i guess revis doesn't realize that the whole strict thing (more commonly known as discipline) had a very positive effect on players like him.
there's no way a rookie like revis just comes into the nfl and develops on his own (and goes to the pro bowl in his 2nd year) without the help of his coach. especially under the circumstances that revis was under during his rookie year (see quote above). the article in my op says mangini groomed revis and imho, there's no reason to believe other wise.

It says he may not start in 2010? and he would have to beat out Eric Wright for a starting position. I'm not too knowledgeable about defensive formations but don't they usually use at least 2 CB's most of the time? I just assumed both of them would be starting from game 1...

RE: Hayden- year or two? Pencil the guy in opening day as the starter opposite Wright. Guaranteed.
If you watched any of the Sports Science clip, Hayden is an athletic freak.

I saw the clip and was amazed at his ability.
this was the line I was talking about, it doesn't really make sense.
Haden may not start in 2010, unless he can beat out current starter Eric Wright, but never say never when it comes to competition in the NFL because it brings out the best in players
Wright and Haden will both be starting in 2010..if anything Haden would have to beat out Sheldon Brown or even Brandon McDonald, but Wright is our #1 at this point.

the writer of the article was kind of vague, but in a round about way he said sheldon brown was a lock to start. when i read this part of the article, i assumed that's what he meant:
Haden will actually have the benefit of competing for a starting job and getting mentored by veteran cornerback Sheldon Brown, who has reportedly already started teaching Haden the pro game.

Wright will have to earn his starting position...
He may have been our best corner last year but that was not a very good secondary...
He was sort of the validictorian of summer school, the best among a suspect group of players...
In any case, our secondary should be vastly improved as compared to last year.....
Wish we still had Mel Tucker as our DB coach.... He was pretty solid in that position but in over his head as a coordinator....

Corner has become a 3 man position.
Be it "starter' or nickel, Haden is going to be on the field a great deal.
Think how many times over the last 3-4 years we have seen our 3rd CB getting burned....seemed like a lot of plays to me. Lot's of no talent no names were lined up at the position.
Joe brings a element this team has lacked for a long time....solid play with a winners attitude.

i think tucker was good, but the browns current db coach (jerome henderson) is just as good.

this is slightly off subject, but it relates to the browns secondary. did anyone see tj ward on tv sunday nite? he was on abao with bruce drennan, then he was on wkyc chan 3's sports wrap up show. he seems like a real humble guy and really fits what holmgren, heckert and mangini want. i came away quite impressed with him after viewing both of his interviews. i've heard him in an interview before, but these were more in depth so i gained an even larger amount of respect for him.

He looks like he is the type we need here in Cleveland, but can he f^&n destroy people on the football field? that is the question. Cant wait for the season to start.

i know he destroyed people in college. hopefully that will continue in the nfl. and yes, i can't wait for the season to start to.
also, i think his past injuries have been blown out of proiportion. he had a surgery in high school and another in his freshman year in college (if i remember correctly), but the rest of his injuries were just normal stuff that anybody gets while playing all season long. we shall see.
