Isn't this the same guy who couldn't find playing time for Peyton Hillis ?

    Think I'll pass

I'd take him. 2 rings as an OC? Sounds good to me.

    Pass...

Seriously, just because a guy is a good OC for one team, doesn't mean he will be for another.

If he couldn't find a use for Hillis in Denver, what makes you think as OC in Cleveland he would?

  • Being a local kid, I kinda liked him, but it just goes to show you can't hire these guys that young. He makes David Shula look like a roaring success now. I think the main reason Denver wanted to jettison him immediately was because of the legalities. This way, they won't have to pay the remaining years of his contract due to Spygate 2. They already are paying two former coaches I believe, and that sounds eerily similar to another franchise we know LOL. Imagine paying three coaches in a lockout season?

It's completely unforgivable for him to not see what they had in Hillis. That just reeks of incompetence or petulance, whichever you prefer. Marshall was a nob and similar to us getting rid of Edwards etc, plus Denver did a lot over the years to hide or excuse Marshall's completely boorish behavior and spousal abuse, so I can see that one. Cutler was iffy, and I doubt things would be any different if he had stayed, especially since Orton has played decent for them.

Imagine being affiliated with that franchise as a fan or owner or whatever, and seeing Hillis rake the league the way he is. Again, Hillis runs a 4.5, according to Dave Logan has the best hands he ever saw, is an absolute beast power back and they gave him up for a bag of Shaun Kemp herpes---plus still owe us two picks. To me, that had to be the convincing blow to young Josh. Ultimately, that was on him.

No however it IS the type of football Holmgren likes to watch. McDaniels may be the type of OC to bridge the Holmgren-Mangini gap in philosophies.

the type of football that holmgren likes to watch is the winning kind

mangini has figured out the formula to winning with his current staff and there wont be any major changes aside from an assitant here and there

its been a long time since the league has seen the old school football that the browns are playing right now and its very exciting for the hardcore fans.

  • Im not at all for bringing him in ethier i mean i dont necessarly have much faith in Daboll but he sent Hillis and i dont know how that would fair i just dont like the idea id much perfer a up and coming OC who isnt quite known but fits into are Offense and dosent wanna tweak it but only bring in players to help better the system i can only see him doing the exact opposite

  • I cant say I was a fan of Mcdaniels. But I HATE the current state of football. College or Pros. People always wanting to hang the coach first when team performs badly. Takes time to recruit or draft the people you want to run the type of team you want. You cannot expect to fire a coach every two years and be successful. I was never a big fan of Mangini, but I am glad that Holmgren stuck with him and let things play out to see how he does.

  • With a new coach named Studesville, how can you go wrong.

The similarity is both McDaniels and Mangini dismantled their respective teams- but Josh did a horrible job of getting value in return. Do you realize McDaniels dumped his leading passer (Cutler) rusher (Hillis) and receiver (Marshall) in one fell swoop? No wonder the Denver fans were ready to riot.

If we can assume Hillis goes on to a couple more 1,000 yard rushing seasons, and Quinn continues to languish on the Bronco's bench- you can make a case of that being one of the worst trades in the history of the NFL.

  • Do you think that if even Bill Belichick would trade for Brady Quinn that he too would be fired within 16 months? That Brady Queen, he sure is a coach killer.

with mangini dismantling the browns, you had a pretty good idea of what he was working towards. i never sensed that at all with mcdaniels.

  • here's my question: where would tim tebow have been drafted had mcdaniels not been in charge? it could be the difference of millions to tebow. mcdaniels, in my opinion, mcdaniels made st. tebow millions more than he deserves.

  • Hey Denver, where should I send my resume?

  • Some people are just not meant to be head coaches.

  • OK, so, why would not these "Championship caliber head coaches out there not be candidates for any HC job in the NFL that opens up.

You have Brian Billick, Bill Cowher, John Gruden etc, none of whom have ruled out coming back to coaching available.

A couple, like Tony Dungy, Parcell, Johnson, etc. who have won have declared no interest in getting back into it, but what about those who may be?

If by chance the Browns job should open up (and I don't think it should), why would not Gruden, Cowher, and Billick not be prime candidates?

My wild guess is Timmuh would have gone about where the Pickle got taken- or lower.

Right now I would probably be willing to be a sizable chunk of change McCoy will have a far more productive career than Tebow.

You forgot both Fox and Fisher are highly likely to be looking for employment after the season- and I'd take either over any of the above named.

Maybe only Gruden with huge reservations- because of his connection with Holmgren. Cower will take the Carolina job or none, and they don't call him Brian Bill-dick for nothing- definitely no thanks there.

Just curious....who is "The Pickle"? Probably Clausen right?

Gruden is a terrible coach. Somehow he got the Raiders to buy into his scheme, and got Dungy's team to buy into his scheme, and he went to and won a superbowl. But he antagonizes and alienates players on a large, large scale. Not just one or two here and there, but the entire team.

Billick is an egomaniac who thinks he's superior to everyone, and because of that, he won't get another job.

Cowher would be a good option though.

I remember him as Marty's special teams coach running down the sideline during a KR/PR. That dude has the intensity you like to see in a head coach.

I am on the mangini bandwagon, but if Cowher picks up the phone and calls Lerner, I will help mangini pack his bags myself.

But of course- I've got a big jar of Clausen pickles (always fresh- keep refrigerated at all times) in the cooler even as we speak. You ought to try some sometime-they're far better pickles than Clausen will ever be an NFL QB IMHO. Check the refrigerated section at the local Giant Eagle and try one sometime.
