Titans to release/trade Vince Young

  • It appears Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher won the standoff against quarterback Vince Young -- for now.

Titans owner Bud Adams announced Wednesday that he has decided to trade or release Young, but he will continue to evaluate Fisher's status.

It was widely speculated that Young's departure was neccesary for Fisher, the NFL's longest-tenured head coach, to remain in Nashville for a 17th season.

"Today, I informed our general manager Mike Reinfeldt to move forward with plans to begin the process of identifying the next quarterback for our franchise," Adams said in a statement released by the team. "He will inform Vince Young's agent that Vince will not be on our roster next season.

"I want to offer my personal thanks to Vince for all of his positive contributions to the club," Adams added. "These kinds of decisions are never easy and this is especially true for this particular player. I certainly wish that things would have worked out better, but I think it is best for the franchise that we move on at this point."

Adams said he will continue to evaluate Fisher and the Titans' coaching staff and that a decision on their fate would be made soon.

NFL Network insider Albert Breer noted that Fisher is leaving Nashville for Arizona on Friday to see his son, Trent, play for Auburn in the BCS national championship game.

Reinfeldt said that under league rules, Young can't be released until Feb. 7 or traded until March 4, the first day of the league year.

The rift between Fisher and Young developed Nov. 21 when the quarterback suffered a season-ending thumb injury, tossed his shoulder pads into the crowd in frustration, had a locker-room altercation with the coach, then stormed out.

The Titans entered 2010 with high expectations after winning eight of their final 10 games in 2009 to rebound from an 0-6 start. Tennessee began this season 5-2, but Young reinjured his hamstring and wide receiver Kenny Britt suffered a strained right hamstring, forcing him out for six games, in an Oct. 31 loss to the San Diego Chargers.

Tennessee lost its next six games and eight of its final nine, falling from the AFC South lead to last place in the division.

The Titans finished the season with a 23-20 loss at Indianapolis.

The franchise has missed the playoffs two consecutive years, and Fisher's last playoff win was January 2004. The 6-10 record is the Titans' worst since a 4-12 campaign in 2005.

  • He's a piece of shit.

  • WOW. Adams basically drafted Young himself and loved him unconditionally. I really thought Fisher was gone.

I don't get totally surprised all that much... but I did NOT expect this.

  • He's a piece of shit.

I assume you are talking about Young.

I don't know if he is, but I know Fisher isn't.

The sad fact is Adams has lost it, and Fishers contract is up next year. I doubt he signs again, so Bud has lost his Coach and QB

  • Professional QB's do not throw tantrums and refuse to grow up. Key word: professional.

Talented maybe. But would you bring a talented QB on to your roster as a backup, with a history of - dare I say - maturity and decorum problems? Not me. You either bring him in to be the man, or you don't bring him in at all. He will just cloud the positional hierarchy when the starter struggles, and will cry like a baby once you go back to the starter.

Young is talented, but just won't grow up

He was sitting in his car with a gun on the console considering suicide. He is detrimental to himself.

Wonder how Fisher will feel when Bud Adams drafts the less talented VY 2.0 Cam Newton?

    Cam Newton's Arm>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Vince Young's Arm

I would say that they are pretty close in rushing ability, and w/out knowing anything about Cam's mental capabilities I'll gladly give him the nod over Young in that category as well.

  • I think Vince Young has certainly not helped himself with his immature behavior. But I also tend to think that it's obvious that Fischer hasn't liked Vince from the start and has found every way to push his buttons. It's been a long, stupid saga for a long time. Fischer smugly quipping about how Vince should have met him face to face instead of tweeting him... a year after he fires Norm Chow over the phone.

Also, Cam Newton doesn't have a substantially better arm than Vince. Vince throws a really good deep ball and has a quick, crisp release. Yeah, it's sidearm, but no one on a Browns board ought to have a problem with that, right?

Fisher wasn't the asshole in this relationship, Fisher wasn't the immature piece of crap who put himself above the team. Young didn't have the balls to act like a man to face Fisher man to man and apologize. I don't know many adult males that let crybaby wannabees text an apology, but in the real world of men, this is done face to face.

He needs to grow up, not Fisher.

  • double tap

  • i would take VY outta college if you had given me the option of him or Newton that stage in there careers's but i have to agree that Tennessee has taken its toll on him and he has never compeltely grown up and become an actually leader, i still dont think Newton is NFL QB material he may be a playmaker but i dont see it at the next level

  • I think Young is a victim of his own talent. He was such a physically gifted HS player, such a gifted college player, that he did not have to work at his craft, study defenses, learn… develop a work ethic. If you don't have a strong work ethic, you can forget being a consistent player in the NFL, let alone a consistent QB.

Vince was even gifted enough to get away with it sometimes at the pro level, but Fisher knew that sometimes isn't good enough... and apparently so now does Bud Adams.

Others cut more or less from the same cloth:

    - Michael Vick the younger

    - Jamarcus Russell

    - Matt Leinart

    - Ryan Leaf

Pretty sure Terrell Pryor is there, but I doubt he will ever be more than a WildDawg QB in the NFL.

Not sure about Cam Newton yet. His early problems and resulting reroute to JC may have taught him the value of work... just as Vick's problems have apparently taught him.

Didn't the other guy just say that Fisher fired someone over the phone? I will agree that Vick is a cry baby bitch, but firing someone over the phone isn't much better than an apology via text.

Are you saying Fisher fired someone....over the phone....huh?

I am the head coach. You need to apologize? There is a sign on my door that says HEAD COACH.

What are you saying? Fisher fired Young via text?

    LOL....

Yeah, exactly. And there's lots of little things like that. Vince Young lost the perception battle because of his own immature and myopic behavior. He was the one making goofball headlines on sportscenter. But what I'm saying is that we shouldn't act like Fischer didn't know exactly how to goad him into it. He never wanted Vince.

My whole point is not to defend VY... I think the Titans should get rid of Fischer too, to be honest. They both need a fresh start

  • @king-ghoolie-lives said:

Young blows, SO does Fisher. Gotta disagree with you on this one Zomboni. Fisher turned Air McNair into a parking lot.

To me Fisher is another Marty except with facial hair to make people think his mouth is a xxxx.

He's always struck me as one of those "play not to lose" coaches that will ride a runningback's knees into the dirt all the way to a barely .500 season.

  • I kind of agree on Fisher. Seems like the guy is credited with being a great coach, yet his teams are almost always hovering around .500.

To me, that's not a mark of a great coach.

I think you're off on this one. Cam will be a better pro than VY. I don't have anything to back it up other than gut feeling.
