Browns PhotosFace the facts Cleveland: It has been a tough year for sports in a city that hasn’t seen a championship since 1964. With LeBron James spurning the city he grew up near, there was little left to admire until the emergence of Peyton Hillis. The Cleveland Browns traded for him and now Peyton Hillis, a white running back, is earning the hearts of the Cleveland faithful.
Go ahead and try to find another white running back who has amassed at least 1,000 yards rushing; you won’t find one in 2010 other than Peyton Hillis. In fact, the last white running back to gain at least 1,000 yards was John Riggins of the Washington Redskins in 1984.
Peyton Hillis, at 6'1" and 240 pounds, is built like an offensive lineman and is proving that given the chance, this “white boy” can play.
Hillis was selected in the seventh round by the Denver Broncos and was asked to play fullback despite his versatility shown in college. Hillis was used as a fullback, halfback, tight end, wide receiver, kick returner and punt returner at different points in his collegiate career at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville.
While on the Dan Patrick Show, Hillis stated he was a team player and kept his mouth shut. He wanted nothing else but to get on the field. When the Broncos traded him he was upset at first, but now that he has found a home in Cleveland, the Broncos are nothing but a distant memory.
“When you walk around Cleveland, the fans are starving for a winner and a successful team, and you saw how upset they were when LeBron left,” Hillis said. “You just want to win it for them. …The fans support you, and even in my home state I don’t get as much recognition as I do in Cleveland.”
Hillis was the Browns’ offense for 2010. He was 12th in rushing with 1,164 yards with 11 touchdowns and was 36th in the league in receptions with 60, third among running backs in that latter category.
He’s even started getting nicknames like Chuck Norris and the Albino Rhino, but in actuality he is the “Great White Hope.” Peyton Hillis is showing that white guys can run the ball despite the trash being talked to him by the other players.
Hillis stated that during the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens games, many of his opponents would talk trash by saying, “Come on white boy, you can’t run,” and etc. But Hillis was only inspired and it has showed.
Peyton Hillis is proving that a white athlete doesn’t have to be an offensive lineman or pocket quarterback passer. He’s a running back who powers over others and has the entire city of Cleveland behind him.

Good article. I didn't like to hear the racist stoolers and ratbirds players reducing him to his race--we should have some white players say to Vick, come on black boy dog killer, you can't throw. But I hope this wakes more coaches up around the league to start playing more white players. Its good for the NFL. And I have recently seen a surge in white recievers, which is great. They catch everything thrown to them, too.

Why is it that everytime I turn on the television I can see or hear a black guy calling a white guy cracker, honkey, white trash, white boy, and its ok? Hell, most of the time they even add a laugh track to it so the small minded people watching think it's funny.
Gotta love America. It's the only place on earth where blacks can be racist towards whites and whites are forced to accept it.
I wonder what would happen if I wrote an article and refered to a group of black football players as a batch of brownies? Would I be labeled a racist even though they call us crackers and such? I mean if it's ok for them to pick a derogatory word that describes the white race then why isnt it ok for whites to do the same?
Does anyone know where the term cracker came from? At first I thought it was because of the color but they have dark crackers to so that doesn't work. Ive also heard that in the old days the slaves would call the man who stood in the field holding a whip "the cracker" becuase of the cracking sound it made when he used it but I dont know if thats true either. If it is then they are only degrading themselves everytime they say it so that doesn't make sense.

Although this is a VERY touchy subject, I have half black children. Ex was black, obviously, and I try to teach them from what Martin Luther said, not what the world presents now. Dont judge by color, but from character.
Either way, you are spot on with how you feel, and again, I am teaching my children the same. Racism is still alive because people wont LET it die, and mostly from the people YELLING racism every day. People no longer live in fear of racism, they hide behind their color and say thats why bad things happen to them. I get so sick of it.
Anywho, before anyone goes off, everyone is created equal, whether you believe in creation or not, it is what it is.

Just some guys trying to gain an edge and get under hillis's skin and in his head..
Im sure at the end of the day they have respect for his ability to dish it out and take it...

So its perfectly ok for white players to tell Vick and Mcnabb, "Come on black boy, you can't throw!" then, too, right? What's good for the goose...

Jesse Jackson, people like him. They won't LET racism go away, they thrive on it, and find it everywhere, mostly where it isn't.
In that, they made it a political grenade launcher, and a living for themselves.

people say i'm crazy when i say it, but i've been making this statement since i was a senior in HS.
"the white male is the most discriminated against combo of race/sex there is."
why do i say that? well........................
it's okay to say anything about white people..........why? i don't know, but black comedians don't feel like they're doing their job unless 1/2 of their bit is racist comments and stereotyping of white people (males especially)
there are hundreds of programs for women.......single moms, beaten women, women's shelters, etc......ad nauseum. what about the "single parent, white male shelters"?
there are hospitals dedicated to only women's health.
there are colleges that actively advertise that they're a "black" college. could you imagine if a college described itself as a "white college"?
there are "recognition" months for just about every ethnicity and also a month dedicated to women.
minorities even get into college more easily than white males. most colleges go off of a point system that you earn points for varios things (GPA, class rank, exracurricular activities, leadership in school clubs, ethnicity, sex)..........well, a couple yrs ago boston college had a story done about how a student needs a score of 600pts to be accepted, and just for being black, indian, oriental, or hispanic you got 400pts right off the bat!!!!!!! and if you were a woman, you got an aditional 50pts!!!!
and don't even get me started on affirmative action.
-
lets not get in a race debate..
You can use many examples of it going both ways.. For instance when lacy peterson was murdered it was a huge story, cause why she is white..
Of all the children who get kidnapped watch cnn and see how many kids are white, casey anthony, ect..
does anyone really get offended when they get called a whiteboy?

rants like this demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the history of the United States, the role of the white male, and the experiences of people who are neither white nor male in said society. i usually don't dignify this sort of shit with a thoughtful response. if you really believe that the white male is the most discriminated against sector of the population, you are delusional beyond comprehension.

It goes both ways. Notice how black QBs get treated by some people. See Big Ben vs. Vince Young. Imagine if Vince had done the things Ben did, and Big Ben did all the things Vince did.
Vick is really lucky he's got the media behind him, if you ask me. Sort of an anomaly. There's a presumption made by a lot of people about any black QB that they're great runners and athletes but terrible passers, or they don't "get" the game, etc.
Obviously many people are beyond all this, but it's there. QB is a "white" position and RB/WR are "black" positions. I applaud anyone who successfully breaks the stereotype, and Hillis is a great example. Donovan McNabb hasn't been a perfect QB, but he's been very, very good and probably would have been given more respect by some people had he been white.

in america, in the modern day?
name one that is more discriminated against.
maybe, and only maybe in recent times i would say latinos are making a push with all the "illegal immigration" crap being thrown around.
and that's ANOTHER thing i can't stand.........the term "illegal immigrant". you want to talk about "illegal immigration"? how bout the genocidal treatment of the native americans that inhabited this country before it was ever discovered by uropeans.
but i'm getting off topic. if you can think of one.........pm me it. i'd love to debate why you think the white male isn't the most discriminated ethnic/sex combo there is.

no, mcnabb would have gotten respect if he'd been drafted anywhere but in philly. worst fanbase in sports.

Great conversation. Racism lives and many people of all races make decisions based upon their biases.
Regarding black QBs part of the problem is that the coaches want them to use their athleticism, it makes their teams better. And it really wouldn't matter whether those guys were white or black, coaches in college want you to run if that is a great skill. It creates big plays and makes your offense and passing game harder to defend. So a guy who can run will not receive the same emphasis on learning the passing game that a guy without athletic talent would. If a great runner has been playing QB for a long time they know that when things get tough you take off and hope to make a big play. I remember that Mark Brunell said that he didn't really learn how to play QB until he had an injury that kept him from running.
