miktoxic I see where you're coming from but in defense of the cleveland sound, this is and opinion board...
Saw my 1st game at the stadium in 1953 and that doesn't entitle me to squat....

i know T. just bustin his chops. i respect everyone's opinion here. sometimes ya gotta toss a hand grenade in the mix just to get a laugh.
BUT i was surprised to see some of the fans' ages on here. some i knew were grizzly long time posters and i figured a couple of the other guys were too (because of their knowledge)..........just goes to show reading text on the net isn't the same as talking to a person one on one.
HAPPY BELATED VD DAY everyone!....cheers!

Well they have experience and......well.......they have experience.
some...i guess....
4 guys with 20+ years in the NFL....all on defensive side of the ball.
4 guys with 10+ years in NFL, including our rookie head coach.
11 guys under 10 years in the league....
so i guess my confusion arises from the comments that suggest this is an experienced staff....or that its anymore qualified than any other staff since 99.
holmy was a great coach....football guru is going a bit far. his first year as a czar has been anything but successful, full of questionable decision making already.
im sorry if my rosy glasses aren't quite working, but im having a very hard time getting excited about any of this. a staff filled with either first timers or guys that were fired from failed promotions doesn't really do it for me....so i wont hold my breath, if i even watch any games next year.

it seems like to me and i could be wrong, that you just don't like holmgren and you have an axe to grind with him. why would you say he wasn't successful in his first year? what questionable decision making are you speaking of? i'm not one to accuse anyone of being something they're not, but your post looks like the pro-mangini posts that i see on this board. they blame every mangini mistake/blunder on holmgren and have an axe to grind with him for firing mangini. if this is the case then i'll disregard your opinion due to the mangini bias. if it's not the case, i would love to see you explain the so-called lack of success and bad decision making on holmgren's part.
while i like what i've seen from holmgren, no one is above criticicsm and if he were to make a mistake/blunder/wrong move i'll be the first one to criticize him. but if the guy hasn't done anything of the sort, i'll stand by him and defend him. it's like that for anybody. i have no bias. i'll support anyone who will help this team win and not work against the cause of a winning orginization.
and out of fairness to holmgren, he does deserve to be called a football guru. football guru doesn't mean you have a perfect record. it simply means that you have more success than failure, you've learned and grown from your mistakes and you're notorious for helping losing teams turn into winners. i call it the way i see it.

Im optimistic but i guess you have to be when your a Browns fan, but seriously i like Jerome Henderson he is a great DB coach and i think one day will become one of the best DCs,hes just young i think hes one of are best Position Coaches
Im optimistic but i guess you have to be when your a Browns fan
i think i speak for most of us who are optimistic that we aren't guaranteeing success. we just feel that based on certain things that have been discussed in this thread and in other threads, we have a reason to feel good about the future of this team. could we be wrong? ofcourse we could. but why be so gloomy and down when there's no reason to be at the present time? i've seen just about all of the negative opinions and none of them have convinced me to feel bad about the upcoming season. i'm a wait and see type of person anyway.
i don't think the past has anything to do with the present since none of those people from the past are here and there's alot more experience in this fo than in the past (starting with the prez and gm). that type of experience at the top and in other areas will help those with less expeirence.

I don't know how you can give shurmer a B+ when he hasn't been a head coach before. He will probably get a lot of instruction from Holmgren though which could make that a fair grade.
I think Rhodes is a good addition but I'm not excited about the group.

I'll give Gary Brown more than a C. Under his watch Peyton Hillis turned from dud to stud and we got the most we could have out of Harrison the year before. I'd glad we kept him, Hardesty is probably already comfortable with him too. It's good to have continuity at certain positions even when you are changing staffs.Zombo
Agreed. The past 3 years we have had 2 1000 yard rushers and a year where one had 850 and the other had at least 500 yards rushing. I credit him with our running backs success.

Come on Bull....we are of similar vintage .Experience counts for something, even if just BS'n about sports.
But I agree with his assessment for the most part....I think the staff is fine.
Add some players who can play and 15 years from now people will be talking about the Shurmer coaching tree......some of these names being mentioned.

Holmgren is a genius
He will prove his worth as a GM "this year"
Go Mikey!

I don't think anyone can tell how these guys are going to do until they start working together. Individual skills are not nearly as important as the sum of the parts. Since 'everyone on the same page' seems to be a theme with this administration, I'm guessing that's why these particular guys were brought together. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Holmgren is not the GM. Tom Heckert is.
Shows how much this idiot knows.

your just not worth the time until you take off the glasses.
edit: so basically, you have no debate for any of the points i brought up?
how can i have "glasses" on ( i take it you meant homer glasses) when i never guaranteed anything and only said i'm optimistic for the future of this team? that doesn't mean i think we're going to the playoffs this year. that doesn't mean i think we're going to win the superbowl. it simply means i think we have some capable people running this team who seem to be on the same page and i look foward to seeing what they can do.
not sure what you're getting at. but feel free to actually go back to my post (#20) where i thoroughly explained my points and debate against any of them. or feel free to come up with your cop out responses/taking my words out of context because you can't debate any of my points.
you just seem to be one of those doom and gloom, whoa is me types who would rather sit in a puddle of tears than to be objective. and yes, your post looks very much like the pro-mangini fans who seem to hate on holmgren and co lately. if i'm wrong on that one so be it. but hey, we can agree to disagree and leave it at that.

i don't think pointing out some facts in a smarmy way makes you anti anything. it just goes to show that a lot of people are still upset with holmgren and the way he ousted mangini in what should have been called a lame duck year. i'm not pro-mangini. i'm pro browns. but after 40+ years of rooting for this team and only seeing glimpses of greatness, the big fat fart in the front office better back up his so-called genius and move this team forward. say what you want about mangini but he cleaned out that shit hole of a locker room and was basically used to pass the torch of a good foundation on to holmgrens' boys.
let's just see how these guys work out before you give them grades. you might be asking for that paper back at the end of this coming season (god willing). let's hope we can give them passing grades across the board.

I thought Mangini could have been a good head coach if given more time (could have fixed a few easy mistakes that he kept making with time management and such) but I feel like if anyone should be blamed for the Mangini firing it should be Lerner. He was the one who brought in Mangini and then the next year brought in a team President with completely conflicting football ideals. I am glad to see that Mangini is gone since Holmgren is here because it is really one or the other, the president isn't going to fire himself and he is going to want what he think can work for the team. I just don't see the point in having a GM and a president who are used to finding players for a particular system and have a coach run a whole different one. Things just work out the way they do and I can not wait till next season to see what this new coaching staff can do.

I think he kind of explains it when he says "let's hope we can give them passing grades across the board."
