Owen Marecic
-
Marecic being a rookie he well, looks like a raw lost rookie..
His pass and run blocking along with his catching and running thusfar leaves much to be desired but i have seen some progress, owen will need at least an extra year in the weight room and a lot of grooming before he will pop his head out and say hello as an effective lead blocker..
I think he has the potential but out of the gate he just cant blow people up like vickers could but very few FBs can..
-
Face it, people are whispering about the kid. He came in with damn near a pass as a fourth rounder, winner of the Paul Hornung Award, played both ways, was an academic genius and killed grizzlies with a pocket knife.
I was all for letting Vickers walk, I didn't feel he was good for the WCO and Marecic had the credentials it seemed. One telling sign, there has been nary a word about the kid from camp good or bad. I mean, I heard word on guys like Hagg, Skrine, Pinky, Sheard, Taylor and lots of others looking good at times, but never Owen.
He has looked nothing more than putrid so far in game action, but it is way too soon to write him off. He didn't get to participate in most of the off season stuff since he went to Stanford, so he was already behind the 8 ball.
It is worth noting that he has been getting outplayed in camp by a Clutts-----who also happens to be the backup long snapper.

Yes, he's intelligent, and he graduated from Stanford with a degree in biology (the easiest of the hard sciences) so maybe I'd want him tutoring me for a lab technique or whatever. I don't give a shit about that, though. This guy is our fullback, and the only thing I care about is him making solid blocks and having sure hands.

What makes you say that biology is the "easiest" of the hard sciences? I found geology much easier myself. And FYI, Stanford is considered the pre-eminent #1 grad school in America in the biological sciences. The other top ten are Harvard, Cal-Berkley, John Hopkins, Yale, MIT, Princeton, Cal Tech, U. of San Francisco, and Cornell.
I know this because my son's major is molecular biology and he did his internship at Cornell this summer and he is going to grad school at one of those places. Stanford is high on his list to attend....though I don't like the fact that he would be so far away from home.
But, yes, that has nothing to do with being a fullback in the NFL.

I majored in physics, almost double majored in biology, course away from a minor in chemistry and a minor in math. Now I am currently working on a masters in biology. Physics and chemistry are wayyyy tougher than bio, as far as undergrad is concerned, though. The interdisciplinary stuff is where it's at. What year is your son?
You wanna compare brainpans? I won the Westinghouse prize when I was 12, big deal. Published at 19, so what. I got a double doctorate from MIT at 22, Chemistry and Geology. I taught at Princton for two and a half years.

Why do I do this? Because the money's good, the scenery changes and they let me use explosives, ok?
Well. Not really. But I have had the pleasure of playing with 40W lasers.

I have been less than happy with Marecic thus far. Too many dropped passes.
Plus, he just flat out sucks in Madden.
Uh oh... you mentioned Madden. The old farts will be all over you for that one. Lol.

As a old fart, my reply is maybe the kid just doesn't know how to play Madden and maybe the reason he sucks is because the guy doesn't yet know how to work the control pad.
I am sure Phillip Rivers sucks pretty good with a Retard at the controller.

right now marecic is a waste of a position on the field. Charles Ali would put him to shame (in case you forgot--Savage era, good motor. was depth behind Vickers and a good Specials guy). he has shied from contact blatantly several times (and i wasn't even keying in on him) and his hands look suspect and are supposed to be his strength (!).
one specific play i recall (psgame 1 i think?) marecic was leading for Hillis off the right side and about 10 yards down field there was a convoy of like 4 or 5 guys with only one opponent to beat in space>>homeboy shrugged marecic off like he wasn't even there. in owen's defense i think it may have been Clay III but still, HORRIBLE technique.
i don't give passes for being rooks on the big stage, talent is talent and these guys have been playing ball since elementary. catching should be 2nd nature to him by now. HUGE dropoff from L. Vick. HUUUUGE.
something that i haven't seen mentioned is about Vicker's character concerns. there have been rumblings for years about his poor attitude. personally i believe Heckert didn't want him on the team anymore.
re: personnel i also think Coach Pat had some input in the drafting of both marecic and Cameron Jordan, so we may want to spread the responsibility there.
as an aside, i did however like how Shurmer stuck up for Owen in the presser. his response was fast, firm and frankly kinda bitey>>coincidently i haven't heard any other questions regarding him asked since.
still, dude blocks worse than Winslow did in his rookie year--and that's scary. and his hands certainly aren't Steve Heiden-esque either. hell, they're not even at the caliber of a rookie Stonehands Edwards. !!!
he has a loooooong way to go before i feel he can justify a place on the 53.
Godfather Roach, I like your QR reader avatar.

let the kid catch up to the speed of the game. H&H must see something that piques their interest. True he has had his share of miscues in pre season. Hopefully
he can learn to relax and let the game come to him. Me betcha he gives 110% in practice which has saved him from the prior cuts. Giveemhell Owen

He is now in his 3rd year at Kenyon. And yes, it is molecular biology. I believe he said he has to take about as much chemistry as he does biology with that major.

Liar, liar, pants on fire.
I won the Heisman trophy in 1974...and the Nobel Peace prize in 1982 and the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1983...and hell, they gave it to me even though I never served in the military. A first in the history of the USA.
But then I got married the next year. So, none of that mattered. I was always wrong in any conversatin with my wife no matter what my credentials.
(I will say this...it may be possible that my son has a shot at going to Stanford grad school. My wife's uncle was a language professor there. Not sure if that helps...especially now that he is deceased.)

Jesus Christ you guys, WOOOOSH! It's a quote from Steve Buscemi in Armageddon. Nobody really did that shit.
As for your kid, that's awesome. So he wants grad school, not med school?

i'd like to add, there is nothing i'd like better than Owen panning out and becoming a big contributor to the team's success. i'm pulling for him--FB is a pivotal role in the AFCN and that position needs to play at a high level. the team is putting all their eggs in one basket with him and need him to be successful badly. but the reality is, currently he's miles from Vickers' talent on the field and there are indications that he might be soft.
in my mind, infinitely worse than bad blocking and poor technique (usually correctable) is not attempting to take a defender on at all. there's no room on the team for pussies. not saying he is one, just saying it absolutely can not be tolerated from the Browns FB position.
i cordially invite you to prove the naysayers and myself wrong owen. actually i challenge you....no, i beg you. get er done.
congrats on your boy Gip, now back to football plz.

Well, since we are hijacking this thread, please allow me to chime in with my intimidating credentials.
I am almost 65 years old, never spent a day in a college classroom, yet my grammar & spelling are far better than a lot of these alleged geniuses! In addition, I weigh a little over 200, can't hit my weight, am 5'8" & can't dunk, run about a 6.5 second 30 (can't go 40!) & have a 5" vertical leap. Who cares! I have 7 wonderful & loving Grandchildren who think I'm a champ & I love them AND the Browns!!!
Mike
ps: I think Owen will do just fine.

LMAO how is Ben Watson going to retire in 2 years?
You guys act like people cant play football after 30 years old.
Notice how I put a -4 after the 2 year guess. Better people have retired younger.

No, not med school. He is into plant genomics and the like (yes, stuff that is Whoosh, over my head). To brag a bit here is an article on him where he won the prize best presentation at his symposium. (yes, my screen name is based on my real name):

I work part time at a golf course in central ohio where we have quite a few plant genomes on staff. Stay tuned for my from-the-heart Browns board biography.
