Draft And Free Agency

The Browns Board

  • That could be realistic in any sense of the word.

I would like to see the Browns move down inbetween 6-10 if RG3 is on the board and one of the teams give us a call and we pick up their second round pick this year.

    Take Morris Claiborne 6-10

    Take Burfict at 22

    Sign Mario Willams in FA

    Sign Desean Jackson in FA

    Resign Peyton Hillis

    Offense Cordinater Hired

    A full productive off season.

Well I seriously doubt Claiborne is there at 6 let alone 10. Burfict won't happen either because he is an MLB. We need OLBs and there are plenty of good ones to take around pick 22 without taking someone with major character concerns. Mario Williams is a possibility but I seriously doubt we sign DeSean Jackson after his past year of antics. We could resign Hillis but only if he dramatically lowers his asking price.

To be honest I don't like this senario because we don't get any young playmakers on offense (through the draft). I realize you didn't include any draft picks beyond the 1st round, but we need a stud WR from the draft. And then we should go after a decent WR in free agency like Mario Manningham. If the Giants win the Super Bowl he may be more likely to join another team. Fujita came to Cleveland the year after he won the Super Bowl with the Saints and maybe Manningham could do the same?

  • How did Jackson even come up as a "possible option" ? He has already said he'll accept being franchised, and the Eagles have said they will do that if they can't work a deal. So there's ZERO chance he's wearing a Browns jersey next year. Seriously, get over it - he's not coming to Cleveland.

I don't agree with RB in the first because of all the possible positions, RB is not one where a draftable player has significant upside over the player we currently have.

    1) If we don't get Blackmon, I like Wright at 22 because that means we got RG3. If we do get Blackmon, I like an OL at 22 - because the current mix other than Mack/Thomas/Steinbach and possibly Pinkston situationally are simply not NFL starters.

    2) Claiborne is not an option because Holmgren won't be paying t10 money to two CB's.

    3) Russell Wilson is not significantly better than McCoy.. we can get OL/LB help there instead.

  • With the draft we need to go offense with the two first round picks. I have been going back and forth with the RG3 pick so I will answer with two different lists.

    Version 1-

    1a- RG3

    1b- Wright

2- best LB or DB Avaliable

Resign Hillis if it doesn't cost too much. Try for Mario Williams in FA.

    Version 2-

    1a- Blackmon

    1b- Lamar Miller

2- best LB or DB Avaliable

    Again try for Williams.

  • I would love RGIII to be on the board ... just so we can trade that pick to Washington or Miami. The drop off from RGIII to the third best QB this year is a pretty significant dropoff so we should ATLEAST pick up an additional second rounder. I wouldn't be shocked to see a team like Washington give us a first next yr though along with a pick or 2 additionally from this years draft. Picking up a first this yr and next is oobviously a long shot, but you never know (Washington has made some bonehead moves.)

So I will start with free agency for my off season plan.

First off I would resign Dqwell, and Mike Adams (as a reserve obviosly) if we lose Adams though no big loss.

I would also love to have Hillis back at the right price. I wouldn't want him as a "feature back" but I would like him as our main RB in a 2 or 3 headed attack. He catches the ball very well out of the backfield, and we could use him in short yardage situation, and to burn clock late in games if we have leads. He definitly has value ... just not as much value as he thinks. Hopefully he comes to his sense. I don;t think him coming back is realistic though as the front office seems to be dancing around any questions about bringing him back.

Now the free agents I would love to try and bring in.

I would go hard at Mario Williams. Our defense was much improved and looks to be headed in the right direction. Adding Williams would would really solidify what could become the best D-Line in football. Williams-Rubin-Taylor-Sheard looks pretty nice on paper. Williams would also add a face to this defense. He is come coaches game plan around. We need that. Those 4 D-lineman could go to war against any 5 offensive lineman in the league for my team anytime.

I would also go after Desean Jackson. And him saying he would be ok with a franchise tag and the Eagles saying they would franchise him is news to me. Not saying that isn't the case ...just saying I haven't heard that. I also haven't looked into it though. After the offseason the Eagles had this past year I can't imagine them being in good cap situation. We could really use this kid. He is a game breaker. If we can't get Desean I would go after Colston, Bowe, or Steve Johnson (if the deal was right I wouldnt hate Reggie Wayne either but he would be a quick little stop gap for a yr or 2)

I wouldn't stop with Jackson (or one of the others I named). I would also look to add another WR via FA. The couple guys that really intrigue me that I think we can get at fair prices and that are still young and in there prime are Mario Manningham, and Robert Meachum.

We need WR's so bad I don;t even want to risk drafting a potential a bust. I want a guy who has proven he could play at this level.

Next I would like to go after a CD or LB in free agency (the other I would draft) Cortland Finnegan seems to think he may have played his last game in tennesse. I would welcome him with open arms. Dude is a good cover corner and a great CB against the run. And he has attitude. I don't know how realistic it is to sign him (especially if we were to sign the other guys I would like ... but fuck it it aint my money im spending) If Finnegan is out we can always go after a guy Carlos Rogers,Brent Grimes or Brandon Carr.

If we were to grab a backer to be honest no one really sticks out at me. I would probably prefer drafting a couple. (one in round 1 and if we pick up an additional second rounder I have no problem grabbing another one)

Draft wise assuming that we A. sign the guys I like and B. trade the 4 to the skins or phins and pick up an additional second rounder. I would ideally like to see ...

    1a Luke Kuechly

1b best tackle or guard available (depends on there plan for Pinkston if the intent is play him at gaurd we go tackle if it is tackle we go gaurd)

    2a Chase Minifield

    2b Best OLD available

3 we go RB here My choice would be Lamichael James if he isn;t available there are some other good backs and backs have been slipping lately.

4-7 we just go BPA maybe even gamble on someone comming off an injury with good upside or someone with big time upside from a small school.

I would inquire about what it would take to trade for Osi (even if we sign Mario Williams)I would also put fliers out there on MoMass, HArdesty and Cribbs and see if we could get anything for them. MoMass and Hardesty I would take pretty much anything for. Cribbs obviously I wouldn't just throw to the curb ... but if he and a third or fourth rounder got us Osi I would do it 100 out of 100 times a day and double on saturdays.

Why would we draft Martin after we take Richardson? Also, you didn't even come close to addressing receiver (Brian Quick does not count).

I will probably get blasted for this, but with the running back talent that has been coming into the league after the first round of the draft I wouldn't even consider drafting one in round one. Unless we were a running back away from a complete team. As it stands though we have a lot of holes to fill. I would also take into account that the self life of running backs typically isn't to long

Look at all the top RB's

    Ray Rice 2nd round

    Arian Foster undrafted

    MJD 2nd round

    Shady MCcoy 2nd round

    Michael Turner 5th round

    Frank Gore 3rd round

    Ahmad Bradshaw 6th round

    Matt Forte 2nd round

Not saying there isn't talent in the first round obviously there is. I just think you can get great runners after round 1.

  • Trade back a couple spots. Maybe Seattle. Grab Alshon. Grab Zach Brown. Grab Vinny Curry, or be DE available. Grab Andrew Datko. Then go for position or go BPA, whatever.

EDIT: Oh, and in FA resign Hillis, DQ, Steinbach. If we don't nab a DE, make a play for Williams but settle for Mathis. Move Pinkston to RG.

In one fell swoop we add a playmaker redzone threat WR, grab a speedy cover OLB, a pass rushing DE in either Vinny Curry, Mathis or Williams, and add an outstanding tackle to the right side in Datko.

Corner position is not as big of a necessity. Safety, maybe. I'd rather see Adams than Young opposite Ward. If we go for Burfict, move DQ to OLB since he's better as a cover LB than as a run stuffer.

I mean, that just makes sense to me.

You're right about it not being your money- I love these pie in the sky projections during the silly season. Let's try and sign every FA out there at a position of need. Get Williams, and give up our #4 overall to the Colts for Manning, pick up his $28 million bonus and blow our cap to hell. EDIT: on two players.

  • ^yup...amusing to say the least.

i think the "its not my money" approach is fundamentally flawed, and almost always results in a) grandiose projections, and 😎 unrealistic expectations.

try imagining what you'd do if you didn't have an unlimited budget....look at some actual numbers. cause the parameters we operate under with some of these ridiculous and utterly absurd predictions/plans are completely different than a GM with a budget and an actual job to do.

  • In FA, I'd go for Jeremy Minrey, DE Jags, or Robert Mathis, DE, Colts. Mathis is 30, but that gives the Browns at least a year or two

    to draft a DE.

And, Measham, WR, Saints..... or Harry Douglas, WR, Falcons, or Vincent Jackson, WR Chargers...

With those two positions filled in FA, that lets the Browns draft Richardson or Blackmon at #4,

and they won't have to draft a DE this year at all. Polk doesn't seem to be the guy for the Browns - he lacks

the speed to get to the corner like Richardson can.

But, I'd like to see the Browns trade down a bit, get another first round pick (three all together) and whatever other picks...

and draft the LB in the first round.

    nobody knows.

Yes! What an addition he would be to that young defensive line. You pay him a boatload, but if you are expecting to be in the playoffs in two years you need these kind of vets.

Guy is consistent as hell and would turn Sheard loose.

    Zombo

I wouldn't be opposed to this either but who would move to RE? Mathis has played LE his whole career and Sheard already plays LE for us. I'm not sure how difficult it is to switch to the other side..

Honestly money wise it is doable. I can't find the exact figure but off the top of my head I remember us having between 25-30 mil under the cap. We have a ton of cap space signing Williams and Jackson could happen if they wanted it to. Adding a quality CB and quality WR additionally might be out of reach but it really depends on what people are willing to pay Meachum and Manningham of the world.

Gotta lower your expectations, kiddo. Here's some real world numbers. Williams will get an $80 million contract- take it to the bank- pun intended. We'll have to overpay like hell to persuade him to leave Super Bowl contender Houston, something Heckert is extremely unlikely to do. Franchise money for a wr receiver is $9.5 million so forget about Jackson, headcase problems aside. So you've already blown all the cap on two players.

Not only that, once you have those two guys on board- it creates a ripple effect on salary demands from guys you already have on the team. Exhibit "A" would be the Browns picking up FA Raymond Clayborn from the Patriots for big bucks way back when. And you can't blame them. So we bring in Williams- Sheard has as many sacks- he's gonna say- "Well I'm playing as good as Mario, so now I want Mario money too."

Another WR? Well Manningham is going to think he's worth Anquan Boldin money, which is around $8.5 million a year, not counting signing bonus. Adding a CB the caliber of Jonathan Joseph (5 year deal, $48.5 million) about $12 million up front = tilt. Your scenario might work if you're playing Madden, won't work for the Browns. Doubly, because with a 4-12 record, we're going to have to overpay anyone we get.

Look no farther than the current Super Bowl teams, maybe only a couple of superstars- but a bunch of solid players and great coaching.

Sheard is more comfortable at LE, but with Mathis at LE I think he would learn to excel at RE. Talent is talent, and he's got it.

    Zombo

I agree Sheard could probably play either position he wanted to. But why move him to RE for a few seasons at most with Mathis? Once Mathis leaves the Sheard is going to want to move back. Sheard is the future, let him play where he is more comfortable.

about 18 mil as we sit now was last i heard after gocong got paid. sure we could do it, to the detriment of the rest of the squad.

  • I'd rather pay big money to one player that would finish out a very good unit (defensive line) than pay the same amount of money to players like we have recently. Scott Fujita, Chris Gocong, Sheldon Brown, Evan Moore, etc. We could have the best defensive line in football with Williams. Then draft a DB that can hopefully upgrade over Brown or Adams or a linebacker that will upgrade Fujita.

I'd rather pay big money to one player that would finish out a very good unit (defensive line) than pay the same amount of money to players like we have recently. Scott Fujita, Chris Gocong, Sheldon Brown, Evan Moore, etc. We could have the best defensive line in football with Williams. Then draft a DB that can hopefully upgrade over Brown or Adams or a linebacker that will upgrade Fujita.

we won't sign williams but we will draft all three positions that you mentioned.

Those are by no means my expectations. That is just what I would try and do. And I would get rid of as much dead weight I needed to to get it done.

Also there is way in hell Manningham commands Boldin money. He has never had a Boldin type of year. His best year probably isn't as good as Boldins worst year.
