Rg3 Not A Good Fit For The Browns?
-
The article is from Austin (aka the home of the University of Texas where Colt just happened to play at) so I'm going to suspect a bit of bias. Now I realize he was talking to legit scouts about this but the author's info seems to lean more towards hypothetical (year 3 is when QB's really start to figure it out. Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't this be his second year in this system?) belief in Colt. I'm sure he heard a lot more positive input on RG3 but he seemed more intent on building Colt up. Now I would love to go on a large tangent about the culture of UT fans and Texans in general but I've been drinking and really don't feel like trying to type all of that shit on my phone. Needless to say anything from Austin regarding a former UT player, especially one as decorated as Colt, will never be a truly unbiased opinion. RG3 could cure cancer, find big foot, the chupacabra, and walk on water and Colt would still be viewed in a more favorable light. If this article came from any where else I would be willing to give it some credence, but not from Austin, especially when they're comparing someone to their favorite son.

Oh and one more thing Holgrem also coached Brett Farve. You know the guy known as a gunslinger. Farve had a huge arm and back in his hayday could move around a bit (although not nearly as good as RG3.) Farve also had no problem throwing downfield in the WCO. Considering Holmgrem had the most success with a QB with a big arm and the ability to throw the ball downfield with the flick of the wrist, I just don't see how RG3 wouldn't fit/benefit this offense.

I don't think he will be a bust just think money can be spent much wiser...instead of spending all this money on 1 QB like the Colts did and watch them implode because they didn't balance out the checkbook on the rest of the players let's build a strong foundation.
What 20 million will probably get you
RG3 M. Wallace & Dqwell 5 wins
or
P. Garcon - FA
T. Richardson
K. Wright
C. Lofton - FA
J. Gaither -FA
L. David
9 wins
I'll take the later

RG3 is not coming to Cleveland.
Wherever he goes, he'll never be more than mediocre.

He is what he is. Not sure why that's so hard for a faction of Browns fans to realize.
Aaron Rodgers at 25 years old threw for 25 TDs and 4000 yards after playing at California for just two seasons and sitting behind Brett Farve for three seasons.
But then again, Rodgers is a championship caliber QB while Browns fans aim to be slighty above average with a quarterback who hasn't won in the division in two years.

So NFL QBs peak at age 26? I'm not saying that McCoy will ever be as good as Rodgers, but Rodgers got 3 years to learn the system under one of the best QBs of all time. McCoy got like 5 games and was then thrown to the wolves. The Packers supporting cast is also 10 times better than the Browns. You could not have picked a worse comparison. Rodgers wouldn't be able to throw for 25 TDs and 4000 yards with the Browns offense. No one could.
For someone that loves RG3, you don't even provide any relevant facts to support your opinion..

bringbackbrownie that post just made way too much sense but it doesnt really matter. People have seen what RG3 did in COLLEGE (apples to oranges), and hear what some scouters say about him (although QBs are a 50/50 gamble). You're wrong and if we had RG3 this year in place of Colt it wouldnt have mattered if he had 0 talent around him. It wouldnt have mattered if there was no Oline. It wouldnt have mattered if he had a brand new style of offense to use but no time to practice it. We wouldve been in the playoffs because.....well....he did big things in college I guess?

Give me a break. No one is claiming that RG3 would have had us in the playoffs. But as pointed out, professional football evaluations rate him highly, and posters on here are excited about the potential that they hear about. Someone a few posts back said they wouldn't want to do it the way the colts did - you wouldn't want to contend for a decade and win a SB?
As for Colt - his weaknesses are easy to see. He isn't accurate, he can't throw downfield, and his decision-making on the field is suspect. With a better line/RB/WRs - of course he'd be better. But it's easy to see now what his limitations are, and it's clear he'll never be an elite QB. Why so many people on here DON'T want a QB with a chance to be elite (hey even if RG3's chances are 50%, that's 50% better than Colt) is a mystery to me. And for those that actually think Colt will/can win a lot of games - why is that... well... he did big things in college I guess?

His accuracy and decision making could very well look a lot worse then it is because of the lack of protection. He constantly had people in his face and had to rush many throws and also made some poor decisions at times because of it. He is also a SECOND year QB. All young QB's make questionable decisions. It is part of there development as a QB. Nothing abnormal about that.

In fairness many times where he had people in his face was because he failed to recongnize where pressure was coming pre-snap (QB is responsible for callin the protection adjustments). As well some of the rushed throws were from perceived pressure instead of actual pressure. It's not like CLE was giving up QB pressure, hits, and sacks to just 4 man rushes. Certainly the right side of the OL struggled at times, but it wasn't all them, and it wasn't all McCoy. It was somewhere in the middle.

Right, his stats will improve and he'll make less mistakes if all the components around him are upgraded (by how much? I'm not sure, if I had to guess: still slightly below league average). But if you don't see limitations, then you're not paying attention. Even when given time, his ability to throw downfield with any accuracy is negligible.
I'm not so sure that his decision making will improve that much. He doesn't look much different than Charlie Frye to me (and why should he? they were both picked in the same round if I remember correctly).
My main point is that Colt lacks the skills to become an elite QB. This is not a major revelation, because no NFL teams thought that he did (which is why he was a 3rd rounder)! In two years, I haven't seen anything to suggest he's the next Tom Brady or Joe Montana (i.e. later round picks that DID become elite). Do you genuinely believe that he CAN become elite? We have 2 first round picks this year. If ever there was a time to gamble on a first round QB, this is a good year.

Terrible article... that is all.
Terrible article... that is all.
Why? Simply because it disagrees with you? You must either be RGIII's agent or family member because you are a one trick pony evidenced by your screen name.

I love how some fans "know" he'll be no good, or "know" he'll never be drafted by us ... despite the fact that real football people think he is aces.
Likewise there are fans who "know" he will be outstanding. I don't think anyone "knows" a damn thing.
From what I've seen he's terrific, and every scouting report out there raves about his passing accuracy, arm strength and release. Wish I was as smart as these fans who already know he will bust.
That said, I am not opposed to taking him at #4...but I am not in favor of giving up either the Browns other first round pick or 2d round pick to go up to get him. If he does turn out to be a bust...I don't want him to be a 2 first round pick bust, when 1 is enough....and the Browns have to many other needs to fill.

McCoy doesn't have the cannon. Big deal. Neither does Brees. But Brees ended up with a ton of talent around him.
Colt will be the starter regardless of bringing RGIII for not.
The Browns can change their won loss record with this draft.
But not if they trade up, and not by just drafting RGIII.

#15-DREW BREES Purdue University Boilermakers 5:11.7-221
ANALYSIS
Positives... Touch passer with the ability to read and diagnose defensive coverages...Confident leader who knows how to take command in the huddle...Very tough and mobile moving around in the pocket...Has a quick setup and is very effective throwing on the move...Throws across his body with great consistency...Hits receivers in stride and improvises his throws in order to make a completion...Puts good zip behind the short and mid-range passes...Shows good judgement and keen field vision...Has a take-charge attitude and is very cool under pressure...Hits receivers in motion with impressive velocity...Has superb pocket presence and uses all of his offensive weapons in order to move the chains...Has solid body mechanics and quickness moving away from center... Elusive scrambler with the body control to avoid the rush. Negatives... Plays in the spread offense, taking the bulk of his snaps from the shotgun... Tends to side-arm his passes going deep...Lacks accuracy and touch on his long throws... Seems more comfortable in the short/intermediate passing attack...Does not possess the ideal height you look for in a pro passer, though his ability to scan the field helps him compensate in this area...Will improvise and run when the passing lanes are clogged, but tends to run through defenders rather than trying to avoid them to prevent unnecessary punishment.

True. However, Colt hasn't had the chance to lead this team with what terrific abilities he does have....
with all the pieces in place. And the Browns NEED to get those pieces in place. The idea that we must have
RGIII, even with a trade up, is ridiculous to me.
If the Browns do draft him, they will know what they are doing, and I'll be delighted just for that.
I'm not against RGIII. I just want some major weaknesses filled with immediate impact players.... for the Browns to be able to compete
in their division. But if RGIII is probly' going to become a great All-pro player... the Browns will have a great idea about it.
We'll see. Seneca Wallace is the guy I think needs to replaced... that what RGIII would do his first year...

you don't know shit. people get so enamored with one player or their position that they forget about the other ten guys on the field with him.
show me where RG3 has done anything comparable to aaron rodgers. the one highlight they keep showing of RG3 at baylor is him in a wide open backfield with no one near him throwing the ball to the receiver in the end zone who also had no one around him. does that sound like NFL caliber competition?
you waltz in here and spout shit about browns fans only wanting mediocre players. did the browns fans draft colt mccoy dumbshit? no. it was people in the FO who thought he was a steal at the number we drafted him at. he hasn't been all that spectacular, but look at what he's been through in his first couple of years. injury, a new coach, a new system, a lame running game, no flippin wide receivers at all, and taking a pounding on any given sunday in arguably one of the best divisions in the NFL. all this while aaron rodgers was buying donuts for team meetings and keeping the bench warm. did you even see the packers wide receivers play this year? their #4 is better than our #1.
and if i'm not mistaken didn't both mccoy and RG3 play in the same whack ass conference? so mccoy lit up all the records at texas, but sucks compared to RG3 who lit up the numbers for the baylor bears. have you seen that conference lately. texas ain't shit a&m is moving.....who the fuck has baylor played? TCU? they fell off this year too. so let's go draft somebody with less accomplishments in the same crappy conference, oh and let's draft his wide receiver too.
we can be the baylor browns. GTFO!

You need to calm down and separate your attachment to an individual player and look at the broad picture. A picture that displays an average quarterback who will be 26 years old and hasn't won in the division... ever.
You can make all the excuses and emotional rants you want, but ultimately, the only player on the field who touches the ball every play is the quarterback. So mediocre play from a team is indicative of mediocre quarterbacks.
These are the facts.

So which conference should we look for "actual" QB prospects? The Pac 12? Well their defensive numbers are right in line with the Big 12. The Big 10? All they are offering is Kirk Cousins and attempting to take credit for an ACC prospect in Russell Wilson. The SEC offers no QB prospects this year. The Big 12 and Pac 12 offer the most QB talent this year and next. Bitch about the defense all you want but the SEC is the only conference that can boast of elite defenses and they have no QB prospects this year. Either way if we take a QB this year they will have played against inferior defensive talent. Its not just the Big 12, its every conference besides the SEC.
