Why Isn't Spiking The Ball Considered Intentional Grounding?
-
Dumb question, I know. It's just something I couldn't fully understand. Does it have something to do with them being in a certain formation to be a legal play? I know in Madden, the spike ball play is listed under special teams, wouldn't that mean they have to have their special teams unit on the field to run the play?

I think it's because the immediateness of it negates the claim that the qb is doing it to avoid a sack.
So, it is allowed because the intent is to simply and immediately stop the clock.

Exactly!
The official rule is:
"Intentional grounding will be called when a passer, facing an imminent loss of yardage due to pressure from the defense, throws a forward pass without a realistic chance of completion."
