How Do You Feel About The Fa So Far?

Not to change the subject but how the hell do the Pats have 2 firsts and 2 seconds and the just signed Brandon Lloyd. I hate this shit so much it makes me sick.

Because the Pats are good. It must be nice.

I heard they signed Anthony Gonzalez too... Bradys gonna make him a star.

My expectations for FA was to bring in depth and role players at need positions and draft the "stars". The Browns are set up nicely to do just that.
Those that look at the 1st week of FA and make judgements about how the team will perform the following year have no clue how the NFL off-season works.
As teams sign big name FAs, cap casualties usually follow, leaving above average players looking for a place to play. The draft typically wreaks havoc on the veterns too.
I'd look for a couple more moves in FA (still depth players), a big time draft, then a couple more signings/releases. The truth is we have no idea who those players might be.
The off-season is still young. Step away from the ledge.

I entirely expect that we will be drafting offense with our first two picks this year. RB/WR or WR/RB. Make any aurgument you want but we are now desperately starved for playmakers with Hillis gone so regardless of how Heckert normally drafts we will be going RB or WR with the #4 overall pick or at least trading back and doing the same thing. The only way he doesn't is if There is a WR RB combo he really likes that he truely believes will fall back to #22 and #37 and just takes Claiborn. Other wise expect us to have either a Richardson/Wright or Hill or Jeffery combo or a Blackmon and Miller combo.

The bottom line is, and everyone knows it, is that we need a playmaking WR to go opposite the young and learning Greg Little. We also need a stud Runningback that can be a 3 down back, one that can be a legit weapon and can tote the rock, someone capable of being inside the top 10 for RBs next year. I personally like the Richardson/Wright combo. I think Blackmon/Miller would be nice as well but I feel that Cincy would take Miller at 17 if hes still there, plus if they don't take him 17 they will take him just before we draft at 22.
Richardson would be our best bet for a legit running game. Then at 22 you solidify the Oline or draft the best possible WR available and address the other at 37.
Is there any chance that the Bucs would drop down to the 22 and let us own the number 5 so that we could draft Blackmon/Richardson? It would be like the Atl trade from last year but I feel a trade like that would certainly help us.

I dont see the Bucs doing that. Either WR or RB or OT - One of them needs to come via FA and they need to be proven. Even if we draft solid picks, it will take time for them to become good - 2 seasons atleast to see if most of the draft picks we got are good.

I feel some teams are actively seeking ways to improve their teams and we are acting like we are the defending Super Bowl Champs willing to stand on our record.

There was a good article in the PD today on teams who've been active in free agency and how effective free agents have been in their success.
The Browns keep saying build through the draft but it's only one tool to build a team. It's easy to point out a consistently good team and say "look that's how you do it,build through the draft" but it's easier said than done if you are a perennial loser.
The Browns need to get the ball rolling, problem is our ball weighs about 5 tons compared to teams like the Steelers and Patriots whose weigh much less. Success breeds success and it's much easier for them to bring along new talent.
Four of the top six most active teams in free agency since 2006 were battered franchises who turned their fortunes around. Detroit,New Orleans,Houston,Arizona - granted the draft was very important as well but this is more than enough to debunk the cliche saying that every good team builds through the draft alone.
If anything it's evidence that a struggling franchise needs to be very active in free agency to turn things around.

I read the same article and you are only pointing out the instances in the article that support your side. You can name more teams who won building almost completely through the draft as teams who don't. Eagles last season are just the most recent in memory. We also have the Browns a few years ago, Redskins the past few years, Denver, are all teams that failed by just paying big bucks in FA. Teams that you mentioned that you claim pulled them selves out of the basement through FA. Detroit made the playoffs because of their good draft picks from picking high in the draft the past 5 years, ie Stanford, Megatron, and Suh. New Orleans got Bree's through FA but what other big names have they brought in besides Sharper? As of yet Spoles hasn't won them a superbowl. Houston just made the playoffs because of their beast MLB (draft) and by the ball hairs of their 5th round rookie QB (draft). Arizona... I forgot they were even good. A few years ago they got lucky signing a veteran QB who still had some gas in the tank that no one thought he had, but their only real weapon on the team now a days is Fitzgerald (draft). Last year they got Kolb (FA trade) and he has bombed so far.
Bad teams don't sign big names unless they have a really great climate like Miami or if they spend big buck like the Redskins. It also hasn't worked out for those two teams.
Yes FA plays an important part in building your team, but in a spot and repair kind of way, not a rebuild kind of way. You have a spot here, fill it up with a proven (ish) guy. Winning teams build most of their team in the draft and they continue to win by being able to resign their players. The players that left the Browns this year didn't leave cause they wanted out, they left because they were not offered anything to stay. The Browns are keeping the players they want and they are finding talent in the draft now.
Now consider this. 3 years ago when H&H took over what did we have in the way of true NFL starter/pro bowlers. A LT, RG, C, DT, MLB, K, K/P Returner. That is 3 of 11 offensive players, 2 of 11 defensive players, and 2 of 3 special team players. We made some FA moves to shore up spots for a few years adding a TE, OLB, and CB/FS (if Brown ends up switching to Safety this year). So we had 4 of 11 offensive players and 4 of 11 defensive players. After 2 years they have added starting WR, possible TE to replace the FA veteran in the future, QB? putting us at lets say 6 of 11 of Off, while we added a starting CB, SS, DT, DE and a OLB to replace Fujita putting us at around 8 or 11. We will have 3 big holes on defense and 5 holes of offense. We are not in a position to be pulling a big name to fill a spot and gun for a playoff run.
Our draft picks like Cleveland, they like the city and they are active in the community. They will resign if they are given an offer. Build that way and not with a bunch of over priced guys who only have 4 - 6 years left in them.

which means in the mainstream of FA big namers would rather go to buffalo than to come to cleveland. so any other facts are irrelevant.

So fucking sorry you won't look at any point of view other than your own. They even say if the fucking article you linked that most teams who are successful build through the draft. Your just picking and choosing parts for your own side dipshit.
-
HB,
FWIW I thought you made a good post.
IMO FA's are best suited to either:
- adding depth; or
- adding that "final piece of the puzzle".
Teams that stick to this discipline are more successful in FA. It's the teams that have continually swung for the FA fences... cough Washington cough... that are FA failures.
I think we have done, and are doing, the former fairly effectively. We are a good ways from the latter.
Buffalo is trying to do the latter for their D with Mario. Peyton is going to choose a team where he is that last offensive piece.
-
Four out of the six teams that have signed the most free agents were non relevant teams that are now relevant.
How is that only pointing out things that support my side, it's a pretty shocking fact when the new cliche for every freak is build through the draft.
Sure Green Bay is relevant and only signed 3 free agents in this time, let's release a Hall of Famer QB and have another HoF we drafted waiting to take his place then we can talk.
The last time the Browns have put anything on the field to be excited about was when? In 07 when we did what?
Signed Jamal Lewis,Steinbach,Derek Anderson,Jurevicius 06 and so on.
So if you are compliant with this fuckin ten year plan Holmgren has in store for us I hope you're excited about the shit that will most likely be put out on the field in the next few years because it's not looking too promising.
And oh yeah for this shit to work Heckert is going to need to hit on pretty much every pick, and sorry but Heckert hasn't done THAT great so far. Question marks are still out on a lot of these guys. TJ Ward for one.
And I'm not saying go Redskins or Philly and try to fix it in one year but what the fuck?
Go after guys like Eric Winston,Ben Grubbs,Carl Nicks,Jabari Evans,Robert Meachem...
How do they not inquire about at least one fucking receiver or o-lineman with a free agency loaded with talent after the garbage we had last year is ludicrous.
-
I, too, am very disappointed. Last year, I condemned H&H for fielding a team that didn't have quality starers at the receiver position. For the most part, the rest of the team's starters were possibly NFL caliber - but one weakness, WR, (coupled with Colt's inaccurate/weak arm) set the whole series of events in motion and resulted in a disasterous season. This year, we know we need an upgrade at QB, and we're still weak at receiver, now running back, and OL (at least two OL positions?). And we could stand some improvement at DB and saftey. It's too many positions to cover through the draft. Even if you do, 5 to 7 rookie starters?
So what H&H are telling us, is that for the second year in a row, they'll put out a team that will win 2 to 4 games. Whether they do or not is not the point, it's the strategy that is unacceptable! It's like they're not even trying to field a winning team. Browns, please hire me! I know very little about football but I guarantee that I wouldn't lose Hillis with some BS story about the CIA. Did anyone really think he was going to sign after that attempt at slander? And I wouldn't go after the big names, but I would sign another 4 players to start filling some holes. Short contracts are fine. We know we want to build through the draft. But some solid plug-ins could give us something to get excited about. This show is way too conservative for this league.
And they had better select Blackmon. Personally, I would select at least 5 offence players in the draft. Our D can hang in there for another season.

I would step away from the ledge, but the Browns have a pretty poor track record of doing what you are suggesting. I believe we may have picked up two players that way in the last two years.
