Cleveland Browns Gm Tom Heckert Guarantees Browns Won't Trade Up To No. 3, Will Consider Trading Down "a Few Spots''

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Browns General Manager Tom Heckert guaranteed the Browns won't trade up to No. 3 to get their man, and will consider trading down in the draft, "but only a few spots,'' he told the Plain Dealer Monday.
He confirmed Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon and LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne are among about five players they really like at the top of the draft.
"We're most likely going to stay at No. 4 and we know we'll get a really good player there,'' he said. "But there's about five guys we really like, so we would consider trading down -- but probably only to five, six, seven or eight.''
He stressed "why not pick up some extra picks if you can get a guy you like a few spots back.''
There's been some talk that teams will need to trade up to No. 3 with Minnesota to land an elite player such as Blackmon or Claiborne, but the Browns would most likely be thrilled with either one and won't part with picks for either.
Some other quick hits from our exclusive 30-minute interview with Heckert:
• He confirmed the Browns pursued free agent wide receivers Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan, who both signed with the Redskins on the first day of free agency. Both players received huge contracts with the Redskins.
• He said he doesn't understand why folks are upset the Browns didn't sign more free agents. "There were three guys we really wanted (Frostee Rucker, Juqua Parker and Garcon) and we got two of them. Defensively, we targeted a couple of defensive linemen and we signed them. Offensively, it wasn't for lack of trying. Not many teams have signed a lot of free agents. We're building through the draft.''
• Heckert said he expects the Browns to be "signficantly better" after the draft, in which the Browns have three picks in the top 37.
• Heckert said it's not out of the realm of possibility the Browns will draft Claiborne at No. 4 despite the need for offensive weapons.
• He said it's likely that two of the first three picks will be offense, "but you never know who will be there at No. 22 and No. 37."
• He re-iterated that the Browns "are fine with Colt McCoy as our quarterback. We think he's going to be much better this season.'' He said questions about McCoy's arm strength are unfounded. He did not, however, rule out the Browns drafting a quarterback in the first round.
• He also did not rule out the Browns signing former Bengals running back Cedric Benson at some point this off-season. Not on the front burner, but possible.
• He said the Browns are at least contemplating the possibility of being without linebacker Scott Fujita for a few games if he gets penalized for paying teammates for big plays while with the Saints in 2009. "Of course, we hope nothing happens,'' he said.
* He said talk that players don't want to come here is "crazy. We had great talks with a lot of people and people think we are going in the right direction. It's really the exact opposite. The people we've talked to, it has nothing do with Cleveland. They want to play here. There's a reason why D'Qwell Jackson wanted to come back here. We signed Joe Thomas. Joe told us he wouldn't have signed back here if he didn't think we were going in the right direction. So I think there's a lot of positive things.''
* He said of Claiborne: "We don't think we're going to take a defensive guy, but it would tough to pass on him. He's a really, really good player.''
* On Claiborne's surgery to repair a torn left wrist ligament: "We knew all about it and he waited until after his workouts to do it. It's not a big deal. He'll be fine.''
* On USC tackle Matt Kalil: "We really don't know what Minnesota's going to do. If they (don't draft Kalil) we'd have to think about (taking) him too.''
* On talks here at the owners' meeting about trading the No. 4: "We've talked to a few people, but it's still way early.''
* He said he hasn't closed the door on re-signing guard Eric Steinbach, but nothing is immiment.
* He said defensive end Marcus Benard is recovered from his broken hand and ready to participate in offseason practices.

I hope heckert knows what he's doing. I will always love the browns but I'm losing faith

Not opposed to this- and I'm sure he would do fine at RT. Our oline would be set for a long time.
Kalil, Floyd/Hill and then a guy like Wilson in the 2nd.

He's just saying that cause its what he has to say. There is ZERO percent chance that we will draft a RT with the #4 pick. Its just really illogical to even think about.

Ditto... It's an "all options are on the table" doublespeak smokescreen as exemplified by:
• He re-iterated that the Browns "are fine with Colt McCoy as our quarterback. We think he's going to be much better this season.'' He said questions about McCoy's arm strength are unfounded. He did not, however, rule out the Browns drafting a quarterback in the first round.Colt will do well, but we may draft a QB high anyway...

What was new to me that I had not read/ thought about was the possible suspension of Fujita for his involvement in the NO bounty pool.

Exactly. Your actions speak louder that words Tom. If you were 100% happy with McCoy, there's no way in hell you would have made an offer with the Rams to try and get RGIII.
Only thing definite? We're not trading up. If any team (most likely the Rams) wants to jump up to #3 to take Blackmon or Richardson, we still have a couple of other players waiting for us @ #4 that we like just as much.

We are "fine" with our QB.
Other things Tom Heckert is "fine" with:
Hamburger. (Prefers a porterhouse steak)
Chubby chicks. (Prefers smoking hot chicks)
Cheap cigars. (Prefers nice Cubanos)
A 2003 Chevy Impala. (Prefers an Escalade)
Two Buck Chuck. (Prefers a nice Cabernet)
Whacking off in the shower (Prefers intercourse)
Zombo
--You know you are in trouble with your girlfriend when she says "fine".

There is absolutely no evidence that the Browns are building through the draft. Where do you get this horseshit?
Because 9 of their 22 starters on offense and defense come from the last 2 drafts.
Please, tell how this draft, where we don't go after top players and instead take lower picks and trad down is any different from the last 12 years of horseshit drafts?
That isn't the question that you asked. The Browns ARE building through the draft. Now, whether or not the 3 little piggies, Holmgren/Heckert/Shurmur are building a house made of straw, sticks, or bricks is another question altogether.

9-23 in those 2 years, maybe all 9 shouldnt be starting.

Same fucking idiots every year thinking that draft picks should be pro bowlers right away or their busts.

and those 9 replaced 9 others that helped us to a staggering 5-11....

Do you mean or THEY'RE Busts? Or do you mean some people thnk that a player, if not a pro bowler right away, is their bosom, or titties? I dont have a bust, so I wouldn't even know how to consider another human being as "my bust".
Seriously, apologists like you are always the same. If someone like me critisizes a player, your response is always a full-out nuclear blast.
It's criticize not critisize.. just while we're on the topic of correct English..

Suggest a FA? You will come back and bitch that " HE ISN"T THE ANSWER... THIS IS NOT GOING TO MAKE US A SB team.
Look snapper head, I NEVER suggested that a new player must be an instant pro bowler. I don't even give a shit about the pro bowl, that entire institution is a popularity contest.
HOWEVER......you circle jerk "building-through-the-draft dickweeds think you won NO EXPLANATION, NO DEMONSTRABLE PROOF of your fellation of our IMPROVED TEAM.
Hey, where are the victories? Wins against divisional rivals? Playoff births? Hey, fuck all that, how about BUILDING not being = to 5 -11 followed by 4 - 12.
Dipshit, BUILDING MEANS......... each day things get bigger, better, closer to complete. That isn't happeneng here. The 2011 team sucked worse than the 2010 team. You have no argument against this. None at all. Only in Cleveland is having a worse record digested as improvement.
Sorry pal, you cannot offer one shred of evidence that says the Browns are building, in any, way, shape or form. All you can say is that a big part of our failure was all the new shit players we added.
SO in 2012, based on YOUR logic, we should go from 9 of 23 starters coming from teh draft @ 4 -12, to, maybe 14 of 23 coming from the draft, with our final record following the trend and being 3 - 13?
There is NO EVIDENCE we are building from teh draft, ONLY that Lerner is adding cheap players and keeping 23 million that he COULD have spent on players.
H&H will be both fired after another failed season. Hey, by all means trade down as far as we can.It has worked great so far
Ya cause you were so sure Heckert was going to be fired this year. Your such a fucking moron. Our defense improves leaps and bounds over the year before with ZERO offseason and the offense got slightly worse after moving to a much more complicated system with no offseason. I offer up evidence for why the Browns could be better next year and why the didn't regress like you claim. Your the asshole you runs around, dick in hand, spouting your stupid bullshit, switching back and forth on what you say you believe in every single season in order to show the Browns are regressing, while spouting out "hey if you don't think I'm right here $1000 dollar bet, lets give it to x to hold onto". Shit next season if we went 10-6 but the defense wasn't ranked as high you would say record doesn't matter
Your a moronic cancer on this board and most people would rather just have you gone than have to read your trash.

Isn't it the assumption that those 9 are starting because they are better than the guys they replaced?
e.g: Joe Haden in lieu of Eric Wright? Phil Taylor in lieu of Shaun Rogers
Of course, the opposite is possible: Owen Marecic in lieu of Vickers. Jason Pinkston in lieu of Eric Steinbach.

You can take almost any 240 to 280 lb guy that has played high school football right off the street and have an OLB that is at least the equivalent of scott fajita snag a college player in the later rounds that has the speed and ability to shed blockers and you will have a far better player, maybe if fujita gets suspended the idiots with mediocre white guy love blinders on in this regime would actually see just how useless and overmatched this guy consistently is out there often by lone WRs/RBs 50 lbs lighter...
Building through the draft is slow and it sucks but if (and its a big if with this regime) they do it right we will at least be a competitive team again...
