If we take Weeden, are you expecting him to be the starter on day one? Do you expect him to learn the system in pre-season? Do you expect him to be a strong contributor to the offence right away? I don't. And therefore he is a project. One we can't afford with the first three picks in this draft.

  • As a Steeler fan, I'd think it would be awesome for you guys to select Weeden with the #22 pick overall. That's one more good player left on the boards for us to choose from. Even picking him at #37 wouldn't be a bad move from a Steeler's perspective.

From an objective standpoint, taking Weeden any higher than the 4th round seems to be a stupid move for any organization. The guy is 29, and whether or not he has wear and tear is irrelevant. The body does not heal and recover as fast in your 30's as it does in your 20's. Weeden still needs to learn your system, and expecting him to have a meaningful impact in 2012 would be stupid. At best he'll be ready by 2013, but your management staff won't have the luxury of letting a 1st or 2nd round QB learn the system for a year, if McCoy is struggling, which is what you'll really need to be successful long term.

As our GM says, you have to hit with you 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks or you set your franchise back a couple of years, unless you get lucky in the later rounds. You lost out on the top 2 QBs this year, it's better to put pieces in place and look to next year for your QB. If you get Weeden in the 4th and he pans out for you, then your team will be all the better for it.

  • As I said in another thread I would only be ok (not necessarily overjoyed by ever having a 29 year old rookie that early) if we made Blackmon our #4 selection. Having Blackmon for Weeden to throw to is the only way that Weeden would be successful his rookie season and transition well without a sophomore slump.

  • Wow... Steeler fan intelligencia... Who'd a thunk it? 😁

Good point on the healing. That plus being reasonably immobile is not a great combo...

On the Draft... our GM basically says the same thing. That you expect 1st Rnders to step in and start, and 2nd/ 3rd Rnders to eventually start. Doesn't quite go as far as to say a 3rd round miss is devastating, but hit/ miss is a continuum, not an absolute. E.g., a 3rd rounder DB who never starts, but proves to be invaluable to the nickel package.

  • Ok a mobile QB is nice, but is not a necessity. One of the greats of all time, Manning, isn't much of a runner, but he had poise in the pocket and timing with his receivers. Just sayin'. Wheeden has an arm and a quick release.

  • I still want Austin Davis in the 5th round....he will be the SECOND best QB in this draft....either Luck or Griffin will be a bust somewhat.

If Tannehill falls out of the top 20 (maybe out of the 1st round), will that allow us to wait until the 3rd round for Weeden?

Or if Tannehill falls ot us at 22, do we take him there?

  • I like Weeden but I dont understand 2 thing

    1. How is he "pro ready"? Just because hes old doesnt mean he is ready to step in right away. If anything that would hender him because he was out of the game for 5 years.

    2. Where did this "lead footed" talk come from. He ran a 4.9 which isnt very good, but that is enough speed to get out of the pocket. If you watch some tape on him, he spends a good deal of time on the move.

With that said I wouldnt touch him until the late 3rd or 4th round. I would rather spend our early picks on setting up for our future QB to succeed. I love his arm strength, accuracy, confidence, and pocket awareness. The problem is that he throws off his back foot and trusts his arm too much. Weeden doesnt handle pressure very well and will force balls into coverage when he feels the heat. He also didnt spend very much time under center.

If he was 23 I think Weeden would be a late 1st rounder, but because he would have such a good upside. Since hes 28 people think he has to start his first year, but I think if you give him a season to learn the system and fix his mechanics, I think he could be a very good player.

Tougher question, but I still have to say no... not fully recovered from Quinn-i-tis yet...

EDIT: Article raises interesting point about other interested teams getting scared, if the Fins/ his old Coach pass on him at #8... Could open the door for them to snag him in Rnd 2 or via a surprise trade-up to a late 1st...

Hadn't seen much of him until the Combine. What's made you so high on him, Gip?

actually, I don't know. Perhaps, in reality it is BJ Coleman that I am just as high on. He was a transfer from Tennessee:

Griffin is likely to be considered a bust in 3 years, because he's being taken by one of the dumbest NFL owners, ever. Synder has bought the biggest name coaches and players, and consistently trades away his draft picks. Who is he going to get to complement Griffin through the draft before 2015? His foray's into free agency haven't improved his team previously, so what has changed that will turn that around for Griffin?

Indy's owner was successful with the Manning, so there's at least more hope for Luck in terms of not being a bust.

No thank you. He's too old and a project. We have so many immediate needs that we don't need Weeden unless he falls to us in the Third Round. We have two 1st round picks and one high second round. That has to be three impact players for three key needs/weaknesses (RB, WR and O-Line). Anything else would be crazy. Imagine what Richardson, Kendall Wright and Bobbie Massey could do for this team. The only question is the team's evaluation of Backmon, Claiborne and Richardson vs other backs, recievers and linemen. This is the draft that's going to cahnge this team. If Colt's a bust, we'll address QB next year.

He's 28. He doesn't have that much wear and tear on his body. He'll be more mature and possibly more poised starting than other rookies. If he lasts 5 - 10 years, that would be a decent NFL career. I'd wager the 37th pick on him. Holmgren stated he likes to draft a QB every year.

And that Clay Pigeon thing was freaking cool. He said it took 7 tries to hit it once, but after that he was nailing them. Pretty crazy stuff. Quick release and great timing.

He has had tommy johns surgery though. I know it was from a different sport, but its still his throwing arm.....just sayin

  • Haven't seen arm like that since Derek Anderson. If we draft him I will have to activate my old "Lumbergh" account.

  • uuuugggghhh.

pleez stop all this shit. can't we have a brownsboard blackout until 8pm thursday night?

  • If Weeden was the normal age of the guys coming out, this guy would be a top 10 pick. But frankly, he's not the solution unless he's the day 1 starter

  • Concerning Brandon Weeden: Roger Staubach began his professional career late and he's in the Hall of Fame. But I'd consider Kirk Cousins or Nick Foles better prospects.

  • 1) Those complaining about Brandon Weeden's age should remember Roger Staubach. The former OSU quarterback Brandon Weeden is 28 years old, but former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach was 27 before he joined the NFL. To read the full story click on the link below.

Like I said- that clay pigeon thing is standing there with no pass rush. Nice demo of doing what you do best. NFL defenses however, will make you do what you do WORST- which in Weeden's case, is try to repeat that while on the move. (Scouting report says he can't.)

  • this guy that can't apparently throw on the move beat luck, griffin, and tannehill.

    Wow, that's wrong.

Snyder hasn't been a dumb owner, he just had an idiot as a GM in Vinny Cerrato. Seriously, I could have done a better job than Vinny. Vinny's the guy who wanted to trade two firsts for Chad Johnson. Snyder is a young owner who wanted to see his team get better, he just had a worst personnel man in the history of the NFL telling him who to get - Haynesworthless, renting Jason Taylor for a year for second and sixth rounders, Adam Archuleta, releasing Ryan Clark, the list goes on and on. Vinny traded away the picks, not Snyder.

Now that we have two very good personnel men under Snyder in Shanahan and Allen, our free agent moves are smart (no outrageous contracts - lose $18M and still have a FA like we did? Genius. And the right players - not the most expensive ones) and our drafts are very good (Williams, Riley, Kerrigan, Jenkins, Hankerson, Helu, Royster, Gomes). We are down only one draft pick per year for next three drafts, and Shanahan has shown he can find steal in the later rounds, so we're not really going to miss those first rounders. Last year we started with 5 picks and ended with 12. Shanahan got picks for Haynesworthless and McNabb.

We brought in the right free agents again this offseason for Griffin, players who excel at YAC. With Merriweather and Jackson, we have two above average safeties who can flourish if they want to. We were able to re-sign Fletcher.

RG3 will be just fine in five years.
