The NFL showed us some love after the 07 season and gave us what? 5 primetime games? How'd that work out?
-
They are talking crap about the Browns, not the city, in what you were referencing, so why are you bringing city smack into it?
Cleveland has a 10.3% unemployment rate, pittsburgh has a 7%ish. Crime rates are high in both cities, but Cleveland's is higher on every report I've read.
Neither of these facts are actually RELEVANT to Football smack that ESPN is offending you with, but you're also just flat out wrong.
I'm sick of this crap, too. I live in Pittsburgh as a Brown's fan. Wanna know how fun that is? About as fun as finding a Brown's Board and seeing this kind of nonsense all over it...
I could NOT agree more. I'm done with the city vs city stuff. I'm as guilty as anyone contributing to the endless amount of bs but I'm only defending my city. I'm never the one bringing it up. I personally don't understand it AT ALL. It should never be about city vs city but rather Browns vs Steelers, Ravens, Bengals and the same can be said on every other respective board. I read and post on a board for each team but most of my posting happens on my primary Steelers board and here. I post more here because of all the city of Pittsburgh hate.

hell i can fly a helicopter and shoot the wing off a hornet from 30 yards. how bout you?

All announcers/anchors have their favorite teams, and contrary to the popular opinion of Browns fans 95% of the game announcers/anchors hate the Steelers. Pittsburgh had the 3rd best record in the AFC last year and all the prognosticators are predicting our emminent demise in 2012. The Bengals are the talk of our division and you'd think they were Super Bowl bound based on all the off-season love. There is also a solid core of announcers/anchors at ESPN who absolutely adore the Baltimore Ravens.
In the end it's all just talk. When the Browns start proving mettle on the field, believe me, your team will recieve alot more national love than the Steelers ever will.

Right, there is nothing wrong with the City of Pittsburgh.
But, a lot of Steeler fans are myopic.
They have no clue how lucky they are.
The City of Pittsburgh is no different than any of the other Great Lakes area cities: Buffalo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee (exclude Chicago because of its size).
The only difference is that they have had a fairly successful football team (and hockey) where the others have not.
But most of them don't understand that. They ignore the fact that the Steelers could just as easily have had the same fate as the Pirates (save the fact that the Steelers have been well owned and managed...that is the only difference...and revenue sharing and a salary cap helps).
Few of them acknowledge that by saying "we simply have a better front office and coaching". No, most say "we are better". No, you are not. You just had more luck.

A serious argument can be made the post- '99 Browns are as bad as some of the horrendous Bengal teams of the late 80s- 90s.
Has nothing to do with the city either. The Cavaliers were getting plenty of love when you-know-who used to play for them. Now? Not so much.

Well, as long as that frontrunner is from Boston or New York.

Indians in first place! Yet no ownership has been more maligned that the Dolans (and rightly so in my view). Not sure if they really had a plan, or if this is all smoke and mirrors. (by the way: note that the series between two first place teams: Texas and Cleveland got no air on ESPN. They were all about the last place Red Sox.)

I think the basis for the belief that the Steelers may be on the downslide is the age of many of their defensive starters....but the Steelers have shown in the past that they are able to replenish aging starters with capable younger players.
And though guys like Homotron decry my view on this, I still think the real test of the Steelers resiliency will come when the 75 year old Dick LeBeau retires.
He thinks that the Steelers won't miss a beat on the defense. I say that it is not routine that you can just replace Hall of Fame talent, be it on field or at the coaching level. I compare it to trying to replace Terry Bradshaw. How do you know you won't be putting Mark Malone or Bubby Brister in there? It took the Steelers 20 years to find a good QB after Bradshaw retires. Don't expect to go from having Terry Bradshaw to Ben Roethlisberger in the space of one off season.
And just because the Steelers went from Chuck Noll to Bill Cowher to Mike Tomlin doesn't mean the same will happen at DC. You could go from your version of replacing Blanton Collier with Nick Skorich.

When we win more than 5 games maybe we will get respect. When you lose as much as Cleveland has Nobody cares about them.

Exactly. We've sucked large ass since '99. Why on God's earth would anyone respect us?
Win, and we'll get respect. 4-5 wins = laughingstock.

Based on what I know of the Steelers, I expect their offense to be much improved this year. I would expect a leap into the top 10 offenses (from 21st), especially if the draft picks pan out and provide Ben with some much needed protection.
The real test of LeBeau comes this year. He's lost some core components to the defense, and those that remain appear to have lost some steps with age. If the Steelers defense finishes in the top 10 this year, then LeBeau worked some kind of miracle or a re-established run-game came to the rescue. There are other great defensive minds in the NFL, and I'd wager the Steelers have a better than 50/50 chance of landing one when LeBeau retires. Regardless, their is a talent/experience drain on the Steelers defense that will continue through at least the 2013 season.
I think the Steelers need to adopt the GB/NE model to make the play-offs this year. If they don't then I expect the prognosticators to be correct about our demise. If Steelers do embrace that model our owner will be an unhappy camper. Defense may win championships, but the 2012 Steelers defense definately won't. Further, I think Pittsburgh will have the worst defense in the AFC North.
Besides, Dick Jauron is an excellent defensive coach and I won't be surprised if the Browns had one of the top defensive units in the league this year. Not to mention your seems to have some good talent collecting on its' defense. If Rucker and Parker can keep you from getting gashed in the run game, I don't see many teams scoring more than 16 points against you. I just don't see your offense scoring any points and that means I don't see many wins in store for the Browns in 2012.

The Browns CERTAINLY still have some major holes on their defense. They were line 31st against the run....and honestly, the way I see it, they will be relying on some lower pick rookies to help the situation, JimMickJack (James-Michael Johnson), and Gesundheit (Emmanuel Acho). They also have hole at FS and at CB, since Sheldon Brown is seriously diminished in his skills. Hopefully the guys you mention, Rucker and Parker can help along the D-line along with The Sausage King and Billy Winn to what the Browns have now there.
As for LeBeau, if anyone get get the most out of your Wrought Iron Curtain (one showing its age), it is LeBeau.

Who remains that has lost a step? The guys that lost a step are gone. Farrior and Aaron Smith. Aaron Smith played in spots this past season and never returned to form. James Farrior became a liability in pass coverage. They drafted Ziggy Hood and Cam Heyward to replace on the aging d-line and just drafted Hampton's eventual replacement. The biggest defensive question mark is going to be nose tackle but beyond that the team is as good as it's ever been. Curtis Brown and Cortez Allen are both primed to play a more expanded role and I don't believe for a second our line backing core will miss a beat without Farrior. Foote is still very solid and he knows the defense and we still have Stevenson Sylvester and we just drafted Spence. We also have our defensive coordinator replacement already on the team. Keith Butler our linebacker coach. The guy has turned down at least 3 defensive coordinator positions elsewhere because he's the heir apparent and the Steelers have told him as much. I'm not AT ALL worried about when Lebeau decides to hang them up. Butler has been under him for a long time and he's a special Coach in his own right, otherwise the Steelers wouldn't have assured him the job was his when Lebeau hangs them up. The Steelers reload in every single draft.
I also think you're bat sh.it crazy to suggest the Steelers will have the worst defense in the AFC North. The aging defense is as young as it's ever been with Aaron Smith and Farrior retiring. We also just drafted DeCastro and Adams and already saw substantial strides from Gilbert. I'm not super excited about Redman being the primary ball carrier but I'm also not worried. DeCastro is plug and play and Adams may crack the line up as a rookie. Colon could very well end up at guard and our line goes from marginal to very good over night. Our run game WILL be improved, not to mention the coordinator change to a guy that does what works all the time. The Steelers are going to make some substantial strides this season. Arians was a major hang up.
EDIT: And Dick Lebeau is the man BUT he's not the reason these players are good, they'd be good on other teams. I'd also love a explanation for the "wrought iron term". Frankly Gipper you don't know enough about the roster to even make this comment. The players that are now gone have been replaced with talent just as good at this stage or better. Aaron Smith is gone because he had lost it, Farrior the same. It's what the Steelers do, make the tough decisions and continue to improve. I'll be shocked if the defense isn't inside the top 10 this coming season, absolutely shocked.
2nd edit: If there is a defensive question mark it's at either safety position. If Clark or Polamalu go down we're going to have a tough time because there isn't much behind them. Unless Myron Rolle can prove that he's not focused on football and ready to prove his worth as a safety in the league. He certainly has the smarts and good size.

I don't know....or care about your roster. I do know that it was stated all over ESPN that Pittsburgh had the highest average age in the league when it came to defensive starters. That 7 of them were over 30. (maybe these included Smith and Farrior, I don't know).
I am only going by what I heard.
You are free to list the Steelers defensive depth chart, giving ages of the starters if you want to clear up this "misunderstanding". It is not one of my creation.
-
Nevermind. As usual I have to gather the facts.
Steelers official website lists its defensive starters. I did not see ages, but it did give "years of experience":
NT Casey Hampton 12 years
LDE Ziggy Hood 4 years
RDE Bret Keisel 11 years
LOLB Woodley 6 years
LILB Sylvester Stevenson 3 years
RILB Lawrence 6 years
ROLB James Harrison 9 years
FS Ryan Clark 11 years
SS Troy Polamalu 10 years
RCB Ike Taylor 10 years
LCB Anthony Madison 6 years
Even without Smith and Farrior there appear to be 6 starters over 30.
Obviously many players can certainly play well well into their 30s, and certainly several of these may. And just as obvious, it is entirely possible that some of these will replaced as first team on the depth chart by younger players (you mentioned Cameron Heyward)
Just don't say that age isn't a potential issue.
-
Browns defensive starters and ages:
DE Juqua Parker 33/Frostee Rucker 28 (not sure who is supposed to start)
DE Jabaal Sheard 22
DT Ahtyba Rubin 25
DT Phil Taylor 24
OLB Chris Gocong 28
MLB D'Qwell Jackson 28
OLB Scott Fujita 33 (many do not expect him to be the starter)
FS Usama Young 27
SS TJ Ward 25
CB Joe Haden 23
CB Sheldon Brown 33
If Rucker starts, as expected, and Fujita is replaced, as expected...and required for at least the first 3 games, then only Sheldon Brown..who might actually end up being the nickel back...or move to FS would be the only starter on the Browns defense over 30. (and even he could end up being replaced by Buster Skrine or Dmitri Patterson...both much younger)

Yes indeed there- ESPN hype machine destroyed the coverage of the Masters this year, with their Tiger pom poms.
ESPN is great for sports highlights. The downside is they hype up individuals over teams constantly. "Manning vs. Brady," "Rivers vs. Big Ben," etc.

I seriously don't see what difference it makes from a age stand point if they're still producing on the field. The only positions on our team where there isn't a clear cut heir apparent for each position is at FS/SS. The other positions have been back loaded with youth through the draft.
Harrison, Taylor, Clark, Polamalu, Keisel and Hampton are all over 30.
Harrison - Worilds was drafted to play behind him and or Woodley in case of injury. Timmons can also be bumped outside also.
Taylor - Curtis Brown and Cortez Allen broke the typical Steeler standard by contributing as rookies in our difficult secondary scheme/playbook. Keenan Lewis also stepped up. I expect Brown to start opposite Taylor this season or at the very least back up Keenan Lewis.
Clark - back up problem
Polamalu - back up problem
Keisel - Ziggy Hood and Cam Heyward
Hampton - Alameda Ta'amu (draft day steal, he looks ready to go right now)
It's not like these starters don't have players waiting in the wings. It's what the Steelers do and they do it well, that aging defense still finished well inside the top 10 last season and I'd consider last season a down year.

Just for the sake of argument how many of those players would start for the Steelers right now? Joe Haden and with Hampton coming off an injury possibly Phil Taylor who was drafted in the first round. I liked Taylor for us in the first round but he obviously didn't fall that far. Beyond those two not one other player would crack our starting line up unless our starter is injured.

Here are the starting defensive lineups and ages for both the Ravens and Bengals:
RAVENS:
LDE Pernell McPhee 23
NT Terrence Cody 23
RDT Haloti Ngata 28
LOLB Paul Kruger 26
LILB Ray Lewis 37
RILB Jameel McClain 26
ROLB Courtney Upshaw 21 replacing Suggs
LCB Lardarius Webb 26
SS Bernard Pollard 27
FS Ed Reed 33
RCB Jimmy Smith 23
BENGALS:
LDE Robert Geathers 28
NT Domata Peko 27
RDT Geno Atkins 24
RDE Michael Johnson 25
SLB Manny Lawson 27
MLB Rey Maualuga 25
WLB Thomas Howard 28
LCB Nate Clements 32
SS Taylor Mays 24
FS Reggie Nelson 28
RCB Leon Hall 27
Only Lewis and Reed are over 30 on the Ravens D. Of course, those two are potential Hall of Famers and are still seen as the heart and soul of the Ravens defense...expecially with Suggs gone.
Only Clements is over 30 on the Bengals.
So, if age is a factor, then I think Endymion is right to be concerned about where in the pecking order of AFCN defenses the Steelers may stand.

Sheard, Rubin and Taylor are I believe as good as the players you have. At least, I like their future better.
None of our LBs would. (that is an obvious weak spot on the Browns D, and a strength for the Steelers)
Haden and TJ Ward would...if Ward were slotted at FS, not SS. (but he is a SS)
I perceive Ike Taylor and Sheldon Brown to be a wash. Both are fairly old and warn.
