Outsider's Take On Weeden
-
From a Steeler's fans perspective, drafting Weeden #22 was brilliant. It ensured we landed DeCastro, the best Guard in this years draft at a position of need for us. Had you selected Rielly, Detriot may have taken DeCastro. Then again, we still had Hightower on the board to select. Did I mention, Weeden's biggest weakness is against the zone blitz? Guess we can still consider Cleveland as a speed bump for awhile.
Objectively, I know you Brownie's want to believe in your front office staff right now, but I think they really mucked up yesterday. You really didn't trade much away for Richardson, but I just didn't see the nescessity to move up one spot. I don't think Minnesota had anybody willing to trade or they could've commanded more from you. I also don't think your front office knew what to do if they didn't get Richardson (it would've been okay to take Blackmon).
Weeden was a serious over-reach at #22. He would've been there at #37 you know. Go down the list of teams that need QB's between #22 and #37 and tell me who threatened to take Weeden? My guess is your front office panicked when Tennessee took Kendall Wright, as that was your pick. So now, your front office, already showing signs of paranoia trading up one spot to get Richardson, lost their "next" guy and took their second round pick in the first round.
Now what? Why are you trying to unload Colt McCoy? He doesn't have a big salary. As I said previously, if you select a QB in the first round there's now an expectation that he begins the season as starter. Even worse than selecting Weeden with #22 you are rushing him into action just because he's a first rounder. Keep McCoy, develop Weeden.
Anyways, your front office looks like a deer caught in the headlights, who don't seem to have a plan if "their" guy is claimed by another team. But anyways, congrats on Richardson, he does look like a solid pick.

You gotta be pretty damn STUPID to think a professional sports team goes into a draft just looking at one player with each pick. Sure Wright might have been there 1st choice but your a MORON if you think they didnt have a plan B plan C etc.....

The guys picked ahead of him at #1 and #2 are going to have the same issues. It's isn't realistic to think there won't be a learning curve.
The point is we aren't going to win the SB this year, so this is his learning year....and he is better than a seasoned McCoy right out of the gate, so we are going to win more games with Weeden at the helm.
I firmly believe Weeden makes our existing receivers better, so while we still need to look for help at receiver, I don't think the need is as great as perceived. Picking Weeden improved 2 positions on the field.
It is obvious that this regime does not see mccoy as the guy but this whole masquerade of weeden or any QB making our shitty WRs better is a joke..
Our WRs lack desperately needed take off speed and our Oline lacks the strength to block anything so the end result will be the same for either QB on passing downs and that result is scrambling for their lives looking for an open target that does not exist, the only real question to me is can the 28 year old weeden pick himself up off the ground play after play because tuffness is what it currently takes to QB this titantic mess.....
Richardson if he is going to be any help better magically be able to blow his own holes open because the current oline damn well cant...
Not feeling good about round 1 or the approaching season at all...

wait gips....can you hear it?

so this is holmgren's 3rd year of either some evaluation or QB learning year? when is it going to be you better produce a + .500 year?????

"Watching the wobbly passes from QB Colt McCoy followed by the crisp, tight spirals from rookie Brandon Weeden makes it immediately apparent why the Browns drafted the latter in the first round and are planning on starting him."
Fuck yeah, a real QB ?
I love your heart noodles, but it's not your time!
I will wait until there are bullets in the barrel and not blanks before making any judgment.
See, we still don't know if this guy is really BW3, or DA2. (go ahead, say it...or C3PO or R2D2)

I agree, DA killed it in camp every year.
I am optimistic because he is smart (Something DA was never accused of) and has a big arm (Colt can only dream of passes that Weeden has made in college).

not to mention accurate. He is DA with a brain and accuracy. I'm so stoked for this season, shit on the steeler fan and his nonsense garbage.

Weeden is not DA.
Weeden has drive to win, work ethic, really good mobility, maturity, touch on his throws, leadership, charisma, is very, very smart, sense of humor....
DA had none.
DA was a sasquatch. A stupid sasquatch, already.

Halfsane is a fool. Sure Weeden looked good in a VERY down big 12 conference this year with one of, if not THE BEST receivers to throw to. Weeden is known for making horrible mistakes under pressure....I cant wait for this 2 win season to be over with so I can hear all the excuses about how Weeden should be givin another chance. I applaud miktoxic for keeping track of all the current Weeden lovers who will hate him here in a couple of months because he didnt take us to the playoffs. Fuckin people never give anyone a chance. M@kers M@rk.

and those who evoke weeden's great college career....really? you want to compare the QB's career #'s? that would be quite foolish indeed. while mccoy had the likes of the great jordan shipley (HA!) to throw to, weeden had the likes of justin blackmon. nuff said.
Yes lets fire Holmgren and start all over again and follow the model this teams had since 1999.
hey it was all ok when everyone wanted our past regimes out of town. what makes this different? because you believe what the guy says? so if we don't break .500 this year everything is peachy-keen? sorry to say this but you'll be lucky to see 5 wins this season. then we'll see how everyone feels about our fantastic front office.
i believe in continuity too. i just don't believe in holmgren or shurmur.
hey man i hope we show great improvement this year and if it's weeden and richardson that take us over the top i'll be screaming hallelujah while eating the biggest shit pie in the world. but IF the team continues to falter someone ultimately has to be blamed, whoever it is. that's the bottom line. it happens everyday in biz. what's different here?
i'm willing to give the guy 2 more years. that's three more than he gave mangini. who knows he may be setting the team up for success. but he better hope weeden pans out cuz he kinda went 'all-in' with that move.

i ain't talkin GMs bills. heckert is just fine. i just wish he could have had something written in his contract that he didn't have to listen to the walrus huff and puff at every turn and kinda twist his wrists in a certain direction.
heckert has had plenty of fine drafts with out the likes of some big blubber chin squat clapping for a sardine right next to him.
-
i wasn't aware anyone asked for a steeler fans perspective. opinions based on things you think, not know.
thanks for the time....but no one really cares.

If the Steelers would have taken Weeden, they would have been calling him the next Bradshaw. Pittsburgh fans always overvalue their players. I had one seriously try to tell me that Kordell Stewart was better than Vick and McNabb.

Yes Holmgren has said stupid shit before, but he hired Heckert in the first place.
-
i had mad respect for heckert's drafts the last 2 seasons. that respect dropped about 40% after this year's draft.

no because we coulda got a running back @22 or later, we picked a QB when we needed a RT (who the steelers picked right after us) and did squadoosh to address everyone's 'number one' need....WR.
yes i was willing to give mccoy another shot this year with those additions we should have made. if he didn't pan out then get him the fuck out. i don't have a crush on any player like some do. i'm just realistic.
talk to ya in november.

We needed a strong armed QB, we got one. We needed a RT, we got the number one rated true RT. We needed a runningback, we got one. We needed speed on the WR corps, we got it. We needed depth on the DL, we got it.
I don't agree with trading up to get Richardson, and maybe Weeden could have been had later, but that didn't happen. We still filled the positions of need. Arguing about when we could have gotten them in relation to where we did is immaterial, we still got what we needed.
By all accounts, Little had a great offseason and looks completely different. With a full offseason under his belt, he could become a legitimate #1.
I'm sure that's the reasoning behind not adding a WR early on in the draft.
Heckert hasn't done us wrong yet in the draft, just because we didn't draft Blackmon or Claiborne because you wanted them doesn't mean he fucked us over.
