I'm Happy I Don't Go To School In Texas

hey jerkoff when will you be protesting the NCAA for sanctions against Penn state?
I'm sorry this isn't the normal "Obama sucks" post on here
it looks like you followed their curriculum, no critical thinking skills

You want to talk about bad wording...
You want to talk about bad wording...
bad wording by the Washington Post writer, right? To me the arguement the GOP in Texas has is with "outcome based" education - "Knowledge-Based Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student's fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority. "
so what is"outcome based" education? that can be challenged right? My link
the writer Strauss is probably right in assuming that it isnt only the Texas GOP, but a bigger movement in the country- namely the home schooled.
And I guess that comes from the general mistrust that group has with the typically left leaning public education sector.
But in typical leftist elite fashion, complete with a Colbert link- and (strangely) University of Virginia cognitive scientist Daniel Willingham- who argues that it (critical thinking) cannot be taught , Strauss goes on to
try and shame the original source of where critical thinking is formed- without even knowing it it seems.... The home.

Just wondering....
What in particular upsets those of you who are upset?
is it just the fact that you like the sound of the term critical thinking?
Or is it that you think outcome based education is a good discovery?
does anyone believe that patriotism etc should not be part of the curriculum?
I minored in secondary ed but OBE wasn't popular then.

I think the whole "outcome based education " thing was needed to help the school system "herd" the students into categories of backwards needs. What I mean is that
a student is defined by scores to best find his aptitudes then teach from there. Sounds good to a point. But the problem is with a student who comes to school lacking in some skills
like social behavior, usually learned at home. But because that part of the students life might have been lacking or worse-no stability at home, the schools had to take up the slack and become
daycare centers. And a HUGE waste of time, talent and resources. The good student loses out. So then, my question is- why are home schools denigrated?

Hooker, home schools are put down because they take away from the hierarchy of union education.
My opinion is that they would be hard to regulate, when and if regulation is necessary.
I might hear that by the time it was obvious the kids werent reaching the required levels of education at home it may be too late.
But I do think that home schooling can be and often is a successful method.
On the other hand I think social interaction in public school can be valuable as well.
Of course in neither situation would I want johnny to get an a because he can wipe his butt.

When I went to school (a long time ago) in High School they had what they called OWE which stands for Occupational Working Experience. It was for the kids who didn't do good in Math, Science, English, etc., and most of whom had a bad family life or were just plain rebellious. The kids came to school, went to homeroom, maybe did one or two classes in Social Studies or History, then went to work at a job. The got max credits for working, and could then graduate from High School. A lot of those kids turned out to be hard working and have had good lives from the few I still keep in contact with.

I went to public schools all my life as well. Im not knocking it, because as I said, you are who you bring. I also had to endure a year in the Mpls inner city school system at a school
seemingly OVERRUN with behavior problems. And at the risk of dating myself, lets just say it was in the 70s. So I can only imagine that it has gotten worse?
My sister in law in Indiana home schooled her 4 kids and typically were also interactive with local schools at every level for sports, academic and arts competitions.
So I dont believe for a moment that the as a whole, the home school way is bad at all. after all it boils down to the dedication of the the teacher?

I took advantage of that as well. It got me through..... I just want better for my kids, it seems life is cyclical.

I realize that wasn't the most unbiased link, it was just the first one I found. It linked to the first hand resource and quoted it so it was good enough in my opinion.
I can tell you what I don't like about it later

Exactly.
I would like to add, that the leftist agenda toward anti-Christianity, anti-family values from parent to child, pro gay/special anti-status quo agenda, etc etc...
is why they insist that they have a complete hostage audience. They hate home schooling because you can bet that most all the time, the leftist agenda
isn't being taught to kids there. Leftsts hate not being able to control the message.
BTW, When I have brought up "critical thinking" in the past, who was it that denied it existed? Some identical offshoot of Heck's .. with a different screen name?
Critical thinking isn't a bad thing. But leftists will use it to try to influence kids against the beliefs taught to them by their parents. That's a disgrace.
Critical thinking itself, is more like indepth evaluation of stances. For instance, if you figure that sugar maple trees are good because you like maple syrup...
and then you park under one in the spring, and you get droplets of sap all over your new car, you probly need to take both aspects of the issue into consideration
when deciding where to park your car. That's as simple as I can explain it.....
-
Because one generation should never look critically on and expand upon the views of the past generation....
That would be crazy
-
Are you really that dense? Nobody is saying that.
I am talking about leftists in schools teaching kids to only
question what the leftists are against.
IE, you will NOT find lefist teachers in the publc schools
calling for kids to question Obamao.
But they sure as hell will have them question Romney.
And every other subject they don't like.
That's propaganda being called "critical thinking".
I know, you should research that. A lot.

I'm sure they've shown you a clip or two on Fox that may support you statement, but I don't really see any evidence of that or ever did in school on a large scale.
If conservative values are god did it, then yeah, they are questioning conservative values.
When I read their education proposal I don't really see any of what you just said. I see a lot of bad ideas and attempts to have children not think for themselves.

Like banning the teaching of creationism even as a theory?

A scientific theory is more than just "I think this might have happened" It requires research, studies, experiments, data, peer review, etc.
The heart of creationism is "god did it". That by itself umis not very scientific and can't be tested. Then throw is separation of church and state.
It's not worth the time to have a lecture where some creationist picks through the parts of evolution that we aren't 100% sure about yet and then ignores the overwhelming evidence towards it.
Plus you learn about religion in world history. If you think one origin story sounds particularly good then read up more about it. But at its heart it isn't scientific and shouldn't be taught in a science class.
