This guy has stated that he is "a Steeler fan 1000%"

Who would want this guy as our owner? (except the kool-aid drinkers here) Are there are no Cleveland people who want the team?

This is owner that has no ties to Cleveland. If the team makes money, he will be fine.

Last year he didn't care about the Browns. Now he is going to own them.

Anyone that thinks this is a positive thing just doesn't understand.

Well, I am not sure that Jim Haslam III is any bigger/better a businessman than Randy Lerner. He, like Randy took over operation of a company that his Dad built.

Also, if wealth is a criteria, the Top 5 wealthiest people in Ohio are in order:

Leslie Wexner, Clayton Mathile, Randy Lerner, Norma Lerner, Nancy Lerner. Combining the Lerner family would give you the #1 overall wealthiest family and are multi-billionaires (and FYI, it IS the Lerner family that owns the Browns, not Randy alone. Randy just runs it for the family).

Jim Haslam III is "only" the 14th wealthiest person in Tennessee, with about an 800 mill. net worth.

The good thing is that in the NFL with the salary cap, shared revenues etc. the worth of the ownership is basically irrelevent. The Steelers are the current Rooney families only business, and they seem to run that organization fairly well. I suspect that other than their team ownership the Rooney's net worth pales compared to Lerner or even Haslam.

Where money counts is: Baseball. It would be far better for Lerner to buy the Indians from the Dolans and put his wealth behind that team instead of the current skinflints that own it.

Only thing is I am not sure how much Randy cares about baseball.

Zombo may be right, Randy may want to put his Browns money into his soccer team.

Who knows. If he sells the Browns Randy can go fuck off and do whatever he wants.

Donald Trump was born into wealth too, it's not how much money you have, it is what you do with it.

Lerner has done nothing. He sold everything and/or took a nominal position with everything his dad gave him. He has owned an NFL franchise and has somehow gone a decade without making the playoffs while making some mediocre coaches very rich. He bought a gay-ass soccer team, and it appears his passion is with the eurofags and not the football team he grew up rooting for.

He's the little preppy dweeb in high school you want to bitch slap.

Jimmy Haslem looks like he has balls.

And I bought a great porno mag at one of those Flying J things once.

OK, well, you may very well be correct. Perhaps we shall see.

And no, for whomever asked, Haslam would have no interest in moving to team. To where? Knoxville? Hardly. The NFL will never again allow the Browns to be moved. At least, not in our lifetimes.

I would bet you that he is a 1000% fan of wherever his money is. I heard he was a Cowboy fan, but when the Art Rooney sons and brothers decided to get out of football in favor of their racing and casino operations, Dan and Art II needed to bring in an investor to help pay off his brothers, and that is when they brought in Haslam apparently to take on a minority piece of the action and cash out those other Rooneys.

Now, it seems that Haslam has gotten a taste of the NFL action and likes it and has decided that he would like to be the Big Dog in the room, not just a puppy. So when he heard about the ambivalence of Randy toward his ownership of the Browns he apparently decided to pounce and try to buy the Browns.

Let's hope Lerner sells them to someone else.

Haslam has been a minority investor in the Pittsburgh Steelers and in a 2010 profile told the team's Steelers.com Web site that he had been a Dallas Cowboys and then an Indianapolis Colts fan. But with Pittsburgh investment, Haslam said he had become ''1,000 percent a Steelers fan.''

Haslam and his wife donated $10 million to the University of Tennessee for scholarship and faculty programs.

                ---

Per the above the only real passion the guy has is for UT. If he was at one time a Cowboy/Colt/Steeler fan obviously he is only following his money.

Also, apparently one of the other possible investors is form Eagles President Joe Banner would also be part of the ownership group:

                  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Banner

If that were the case, Banner would almost certainly replace Holmgren. Heckert would probably stay because of close connections with Banner.

So, now also apparently this could be an ownership group with Jay Schottenstein of Columbus also being part of the group.

                    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Schottenstein

query: is it "Shot en stine" or "Shot en steen"?

Or, in the words of Gene Wilder "is it doo doo".

I am also hearing that the Schottenstein's may be making a rival bid for the team....not that they are part of the Haslam group.

Randy may be trying to put the team up for bids. I guess that is smart.

Lerner, Haslam, Schottenstein all have far more net worth than Rooney.....so obviously having $$$ does not correlate to NFL success. The Green Bay Packers are owned not by one wealthy person, but by thousands of working class people.

This should make Rich and Ghoulie happy, since they always did think Lerner was the problem.

I don't like the idea of an owner who has zero connection with the team, or no loyalty to an area. And I'd question if Haslam by himself has the $$$$$ to pull off a successful sale. I'd hazard a guess the sale price of the Browns would be Haslam's total net worth. The Cowboys fer sure are worth more than a billion, ditto the Giants.

At least Shottensteen has an Ohio connection. If Randy wants out- adios, but we could do worse. We get a Dan Snyder II in here I'd puke.

The timing of this couldn't be worse. Just as there is some excitement generating about this team with all the young potential stars, and now we gotta deal with this drama?

And if Banner is included in the ownership group, then we end up with a problem like we had with Carmen Policy. Now granted, Banner ran a very successful Eagles team, so he's a good team administrator. But Policy also was good in San Fran, but when he had the far reaching power he had in Cleveland, he basically hamstrung the team for years (we are still feeling the effects).

Personally though, I never thought Lerner was an issue. He threw money around at the request of the GM and Coach/GM, and that didn't work. We don't need an owner to be real visible or invested from day to day. We just need an owner that isn't a skinflint. And Lerner never has been.

My guess is, it isn't an outright purchase. That it will be a purchase of 30% of the team for controlling ownership.

I couldnt agree more when it comes to timing. Its not the ideal time of year for this kind of mega change. I like the way things are rollin right now. IMO with the way our F.O. is currently set up and shaping up the owner doesn't need to be hands on, just financially hands on. I think the organization as a whole, is in the best position its been in since our return. I just cringe at the thought of a shake up at this point when weve come so far in just a few short years.

!!!!hopefully i'll be alive when it happens!!!!

I am pretty sure this is just an investment group and not a selling of the entire team.

Per the above the only real passion the guy has is for UT. If he was at one time a Cowboy/Colt/Steeler fan obviously he is only following his money.

I understand that while Jim Haslam III may himself have "only" an 800 mill net worth, his family's net worth is like 3 billion. His father, the founder of his company is still alive and in his 80s so Jimmy Boy may be in line for an additional big inheritance.
