  • The timing of this couldn't be worse. Just as there is some excitement generating about this team with all the young potential stars, and now we gotta deal with this drama?

And if Banner is included in the ownership group, then we end up with a problem like we had with Carmen Policy. Now granted, Banner ran a very successful Eagles team, so he's a good team administrator. But Policy also was good in San Fran, but when he had the far reaching power he had in Cleveland, he basically hamstrung the team for years (we are still feeling the effects).

Personally though, I never thought Lerner was an issue. He threw money around at the request of the GM and Coach/GM, and that didn't work. We don't need an owner to be real visible or invested from day to day. We just need an owner that isn't a skinflint. And Lerner never has been.

  • My guess is, it isn't an outright purchase. That it will be a purchase of 30% of the team for controlling ownership.

I couldnt agree more when it comes to timing. Its not the ideal time of year for this kind of mega change. I like the way things are rollin right now. IMO with the way our F.O. is currently set up and shaping up the owner doesn't need to be hands on, just financially hands on. I think the organization as a whole, is in the best position its been in since our return. I just cringe at the thought of a shake up at this point when weve come so far in just a few short years.

  • Everything about this deal looks positive.

  • I am pretty sure this is just an investment group and not a selling of the entire team.

Haslam has been a minority investor in the Pittsburgh Steelers and in a 2010 profile told the team's Steelers.com Web site that he had been a Dallas Cowboys and then an Indianapolis Colts fan. But with Pittsburgh investment, Haslam said he had become ''1,000 percent a Steelers fan.''

Haslam and his wife donated $10 million to the University of Tennessee for scholarship and faculty programs.

    ---

Per the above the only real passion the guy has is for UT. If he was at one time a Cowboy/Colt/Steeler fan obviously he is only following his money.

I don't like the idea of an owner who has zero connection with the team, or no loyalty to an area. And I'd question if Haslam by himself has the $$$$$ to pull off a successful sale. I'd hazard a guess the sale price of the Browns would be Haslam's total net worth. The Cowboys fer sure are worth more than a billion, ditto the Giants.

At least Shottensteen has an Ohio connection. If Randy wants out- adios, but we could do worse. We get a Dan Snyder II in here I'd puke.

I understand that while Jim Haslam III may himself have "only" an 800 mill net worth, his family's net worth is like 3 billion. His father, the founder of his company is still alive and in his 80s so Jimmy Boy may be in line for an additional big inheritance.

30% would not be controlling interest by any means.

Recall that when Art Modell owned the Browns he actually only owned 52%...but that was enough to give him control. Bob Gries owned 43% and Al Lerner 5%.

Haslam has a minority interest in the Steelers. Why would he trade laterally? No, he wants to trade up to majority status.

The only other possibility that would constitute a minority interest is if it included the option to purchase a majority interest after a period of time, like 2=3-5 yrs.

  • a new owner does not necessarily equate to a better owner. careful what ya wish for.....if an owner with deep pockets and ties to cleveland isn't enough for you browns fans, what exactly are you looking for in an owner? someone of dan snyders ilk thats constantly fucking with the organization? a jerry jones that imposes his will on his football men?

many of you incorrectly think that a owner with a football IQ will somehow make us a winner. i dont need to list the reasons why thats an idiotic assumption. whats so wrong with lerner.....that he bought another team in a different country in a different sport....that you feel slighted because lerner isn't with the team 100% of the time, devoting his complete and undivided attention to this one aspect of his life so ya can feel like he's trying.....that he's learning along the way after inheriting the team rather than be a born and bred football guy?

so ya think there's so fucking many better owners, eh? nah....thats too easy. methinks some of you will never be happy regardless of who owns the team.....with nothing to bitch about, life would seem meaningless....

30% is what’s required by the NFL to have controlling interest and be considered the Owner of Record. I believe that’s what Rooney has.

If Lerner himself has 52% and he sells 30%, then he no longer has Controlling Interest.

Yes, you make all valid points. The only thing I will say is that, to date, Randy tried to hire the right people...Savage, Butch Davis, Crennell etc., but it just didn't work out.

And the Holmgren experience to date is not a success....and he may in fact be on the way out.

The other thing I will note is that I feel it is a fact that owning the Browns was thrust upon Randy when his dad died, it was not something he was looking or wanting to do: own an NFL team.

At least with Haslam, we will know that he will WANT to be an NFL owner. How good he will do remains to be seen. Will he be a Bob Kraft/Dan Rooney or a Dan Snyder/Jerry Jones

30% would be controlling interest IF no one else owned 30% or more. Lerner does not own 52%, I believe the family owns 100%. If he sold only 30% and retained 70% he would still be the controlling interest.

  • Not a Lerner fan, but also not thrilled with the Browns potentially being sold to a guy who stated he was a 1000% Steeler fan.

We need stability to see if what we have now is going to work. Not another blow it all up, install a new President and GM deal.

  • No way the Browns move again. We have a lease with the city until 2029, there's nowhere to move once The Los Angeles Jaguars become a reality and the Browns still bring in a ton of money. No way the owners ever let us leave in the next 20 years. Plus, once we start winning again our value will sky rocket. We are in the top half of teams as far as revenues go and we had sucked for 13 years. We aren't going anywhere.

Do you guys not get that his statement of being 1000% Steelers Fan was simply rhetoric for the fans who thought he wasn’t going to be good for the Steelers as he was a professed fan of two other organizations?

Just like a player who grew up a die hard Browns fan, goes and plays for another team, will become a fan of the team he’s on. Same for a Coach. Same for an owner.

Should he buy the Browns, he will become a Browns fan over a Steelers fan.

Exactly. He would be the biggest Browns can in the world the second he signs.

  • I like the sale, and I like it a lot.

  • He'll be a good owner. Passionate about football.

  • Here is a video of Haslam and his family talking about the death of his mother. Just to get some feel for the guy:
