It's not hard to imagine at all. If a black person in Virginia is the descendant of African slaves brought here in the and 1800s and so is referred to as an "African-American", why should it blow your mind or offend you that a black person from Utah whose family descended from slaves brought to Haiti in the 1800s is referred to as an "African-American"? It's the same extrapolation used every day. As you like to say, maybe "you're just nitpicking."

You could refer to me as an Irish-American if you want. Same thing. Except the part where my ancestors came to America willingly.

Oh no doubt I'm nit picking.

So how far back do we go as Irish Americans?

    Vikings? Normans?

But while I'm nit picking 🙂 her family came to America willingly too.

Well, my grandmother had the brogue, so not too far for me.

But yes, at some point it's strange. I don't need to go back to Stonehenge, and for the most part I don't care anyway.

Generally, though, and for obvious reasons, the people who cling to their identity most are the people who had it stolen from them, or were oppressed. The Irish are similar in this regard.

Haiti was part of the slave trade triangle. Which is why it would be absolutely accurate/allowable for someone of Haitian descent to refer to themselves as African American.

They also have about zero resources to draw from, so while I agree with you to some degree, it does go beyond that

Early man walked away as modern man took control. Their minds weren't all the same and to conquer was their goal. So He built his great empires and he slaughtered his own kind, and he died a confused man and killed himself in his own mind...

Why not? That's how you'd describe your ancestry - as Irish. You'd be an Irish-American living in Germany. If your family had gone straight from Ireland to Germany you'd be Irish-German. Just like there are lots of German Turks and Algerian French. Just like Mia Love is an American of African ancestry (also called an African-American) and living in Utah.

I don't know what the big deal is. Is it that you'd like African-Americans to forget about the whole African part and be just "Americans"? Well, they are just Americans. And when you want to expand on that, and describe their ancestry, you use the term African-American. Just like you do with Irish, German, Mexican, Italian, etc.

I hope we don't spend lots of time on stuff like this. Let's move on.

Heck's response was pretty much the same I'd give. I'm just not really sure I understand the problem with acknowledging your ancestry. I don't think Mayor Love (Awesome) goes around introducing herself as "African-American Mia Love" That would be strange. But if the ancestry topic came up, it's absolutely normal for her to acknowledge wherever it is her family hails from. Just as it would be totally normal for you to bring up "Irish" when discussing your children in your scenario above.
