Plan If Shurmur Can't Hack It.

The Browns Board

  • Obviously this season will be a big one for Pat Shurmur. After all, he is really conducting an audition for new owner Jimmy Haslam. Now, I believe that this season will be a "bumper" season for Shurmur. He is coaching a team with 15 rookies on the roster. I wonder if that is some kind of record for any NFL team post 1950?

If Shurmur is to be kept I think he has to show Bill Walsh like capabilities by year 3.

If Haslam decides to be generous he may give Shurmur a pass this year....but next year is a 'must win' year.

If, however, Shurmur falters, I believe there could be a plan in place for his replacement.

That replacement would be a guy with ties to NE Ohio, the Browns, and the SEC.

That would be one Mr. Nick Saban.

Clearly all evidence is that the college game is way too easy for Saban. I don't know if Alabama is enjoying better living through chemistry, but his Alabama team's are way too good. And I don't think it is because the sunshine of Alabama grows football players like it grows cotton. Saban has clearly outgrown the college game. He is a former NFL DC and HC. If anyone could approach him to come back into the NFL it may be Haslam. Though Saban was born I believe n WVa, he spent most or much of his younger years in NE Ohio. I believe he is a Kent State graduate. Plus, he was the Browns DC under Belichick here.

If he is bored with the college game, and I can't see how he is not almost already there, then the Browns could end up being a natural fit for him.

He is a Kent grad, coached at Kent, Toledo, Ohio State and the Browns

  • It sounds nice but his time with the dolphins was not good. I don't think he'd want to come back to the NFL when he's creating a darn good legacy as a college head coach. Some guys just can't transition from college to NFL coaching.

I think the legacy is that he is wasting his talents if he stays in the college game much more. And I hear what you say about transitioning, but, since he has done it once I believe his transition would go much smoother the next time around. Look at Pete Carroll who has been there done that before Saban.

Also, Saban should get out now before the scandal hits him like it hit Carroll.....and you best believe that there is plenty in the closets if revealed that would be "scandalous".

  • That sounds great, and I'm totally down for that, but I don't see any way in hell we get him out of bama.

He's a great coach, but also note where he's had most of his success. You have to be turrible to have mediocre or bad teams at bummer and lsux. Definitely not diminishing the man's accomplishments, but I think it's worth noting.

  • Talking about Ohio Ties what about about Bill Cowher?

As far as I know he has passed up numerous opportunities to coach but has said nyet to all of them. The window for him actually coming back is closing. Figure it out: John Madden never came back. Nor did several others.

Gruden might see himself as the new Madden: coach 10 years, win a SB, retire, do TV the rest of your life. Maybe instead of "Madden Games", all the kids will be playing "Gruden Games".

Or, maybe Cowher will be like Dick Vermeil. Stay out of coaching for nearly 15 years then get back into it. It has been about half that time now, hasn't it? How long has Cowher been "retired"? Maybe he likes his TV gig.

  • Hah that's an interesting idea.

Gruden 2020 video game. I guess a point will come where kids do not know who madden is/was.

  • My thinking is that Haslam drops Holmgren before he totally blows up the front office. Maybe the following year if Shurmer still just doesn't "get it". I just don't see him turning it all over at once. But then again...i'm not him.

  • it's pretty obvious the last time I talked to Jay and Nick they said they wouldn't mind taking the reigns...of course Haslam probably wouldn't mind Peyton taking over in a few years.

    Cowher retired in Jan. 2007

Why is it that Ohio State fans are so quick to point fingers at other schools for messing up? USC, Penn State, Miami. There is no way you can compare what happened in Happy Valley to what happened at OSU. Not because of magnitude, but because they were completely different circumstances.

As far as Tressel coaching the Browns, I'd rather he stays at his current job. Gruden may be a good choice, but a part of me feels he has always been a bit overrated. Cowher, too much Steeler history there. Saban already tried the NCAA and won't be back anytime soon. If Shurmur gets replaced, don't be surprised if it's by another first time head coach.

He has been less effective than Mangini in all these areas.

how great would it be if Jimmy H dumped Holmy this year and re-hired The Mangenius the next?

great to me at least. 😉

and if Eric had success in his second go-around, it would make Holmgren look so bad it may even challenge his legacy. !!

    mmmmm, a delectably satisfying thought.

to be completely honest though, i wish the guy no ill will so extreme--i just never liked the hire.

    or the results.

?? Tressell was covering up kids selling trinkets. Penn State swept gross criminal activity under the rug- for 10 years. Get back to me when Terrell Pryor gets life in prison for selling memorabilia.

If you want to excuse Paterno because he was senile, be my guest.

  • to realize an ENTIRE ERA of their school history was fueled by an ambition to molest as the driving motivation to win. !! wtf!! uniMAGINABLE to be a die hard pn st fan!! FILTHY!! those poor buggers!!

think they knew?...were there chances?.....did they enable??

the Browns have been quite disappointing more often than not since they came back...but at least Browns fans have never had to endure ANYTHING close to the embarrassment they suffered. WOW...

    EF! that barnacle school. !

  • Here is the problem. He already tried to make the jump from top college coach to NFL coach and he failed. He went back for a few reasons. More control, easier scouting, better hours, and more money. Why would he jump back to the NFL, to coach for one of the worst teams in the NFL no less, when he knows he will be on a very hot seat performing a job he knows is harder and one that doesn't give him as much prestige.

Because of the professional challenge the NFL would present to him. To make up for his failure with the Dolphins. To show that he can take an NFL team to the highest heights as well as a college team.

He has already won 3 college football national championships. What more does he have to prove? Will any more trophies of that sort mean that much more to him?

Plus, unlike say a Paterno/Hayes/Schembechler/Bryant/even Urban Meyer and Jim Tressel, none of whom spent a day coaching in the NFL..Saban was weaned on the NFL. He was an assistant coach, a DC and HC.

It is the only challenge left to him as a football coach as far as I am concerned.

I am bored seeing him coach the college game. How can he not be bored.

He needs to see the gleam, man. There is no gleam like the one coming off the Lombardi Trophy.

  • No doubt Saban will be inducted into college football hall of fame after his impressive career in the college ranks.

His two years as head coach of the Dolphins, however, was mediocre at 15-17. His comfort level seemed a point

of conflict in the pro game as his integrity took a big hit in the manner he left the Dolphins for Tuscaloosa.

I sense he is another in the long line of college coaches unable to successfully transistion to the pro game.

Haslam may put him on the list but I really don't see a good fit with the Browns.
