Plan If Shurmur Can't Hack It.

  • My thinking is that Haslam drops Holmgren before he totally blows up the front office. Maybe the following year if Shurmer still just doesn't "get it". I just don't see him turning it all over at once. But then again...i'm not him.

  • it's pretty obvious the last time I talked to Jay and Nick they said they wouldn't mind taking the reigns...of course Haslam probably wouldn't mind Peyton taking over in a few years.

Talking about Ohio Ties what about about Bill Cowher?

As far as I know he has passed up numerous opportunities to coach but has said nyet to all of them. The window for him actually coming back is closing. Figure it out: John Madden never came back. Nor did several others.

Gruden might see himself as the new Madden: coach 10 years, win a SB, retire, do TV the rest of your life. Maybe instead of "Madden Games", all the kids will be playing "Gruden Games".

Or, maybe Cowher will be like Dick Vermeil. Stay out of coaching for nearly 15 years then get back into it. It has been about half that time now, hasn't it? How long has Cowher been "retired"? Maybe he likes his TV gig.

Obviously this season will be a big one for Pat Shurmur. After all, he is really conducting an audition for new owner Jimmy Haslam. Now, I believe that this season will be a "bumper" season for Shurmur. He is coaching a team with 15 rookies on the roster. I wonder if that is some kind of record for any NFL team post 1950?

If Shurmur is to be kept I think he has to show Bill Walsh like capabilities by year 3.

If Haslam decides to be generous he may give Shurmur a pass this year....but next year is a 'must win' year.

If, however, Shurmur falters, I believe there could be a plan in place for his replacement.

That replacement would be a guy with ties to NE Ohio, the Browns, and the SEC.

That would be one Mr. Nick Saban.

Clearly all evidence is that the college game is way too easy for Saban. I don't know if Alabama is enjoying better living through chemistry, but his Alabama team's are way too good. And I don't think it is because the sunshine of Alabama grows football players like it grows cotton. Saban has clearly outgrown the college game. He is a former NFL DC and HC. If anyone could approach him to come back into the NFL it may be Haslam. Though Saban was born I believe n WVa, he spent most or much of his younger years in NE Ohio. I believe he is a Kent State graduate. Plus, he was the Browns DC under Belichick here.

If he is bored with the college game, and I can't see how he is not almost already there, then the Browns could end up being a natural fit for him.

Plus he'd get to reunite with Richardsen. I would love to see Saban here. He HAS to better then Schurmur.

He is a Kent grad, coached at Kent, Toledo, Ohio State and the Browns

Saban would be the logical first choice & most qualified if Shurmur flops. But don't forget there's a couple of other guys out there with Ohio ties. Gruden if he wants to give up his cushy ESPN gig, Bob Stoops, and yes Jim Tressell- the Penn State mess makes Jim look like a virtual Saint in comparison.

Why is it that Ohio State fans are so quick to point fingers at other schools for messing up? USC, Penn State, Miami. There is no way you can compare what happened in Happy Valley to what happened at OSU. Not because of magnitude, but because they were completely different circumstances.

As far as Tressel coaching the Browns, I'd rather he stays at his current job. Gruden may be a good choice, but a part of me feels he has always been a bit overrated. Cowher, too much Steeler history there. Saban already tried the NCAA and won't be back anytime soon. If Shurmur gets replaced, don't be surprised if it's by another first time head coach.

He has been less effective than Mangini in all these areas.

how great would it be if Jimmy H dumped Holmy this year and re-hired The Mangenius the next?

great to me at least. 😉

and if Eric had success in his second go-around, it would make Holmgren look so bad it may even challenge his legacy. !!

    mmmmm, a delectably satisfying thought.

to be completely honest though, i wish the guy no ill will so extreme--i just never liked the hire.

    or the results.

?? Tressell was covering up kids selling trinkets. Penn State swept gross criminal activity under the rug- for 10 years. Get back to me when Terrell Pryor gets life in prison for selling memorabilia.

If you want to excuse Paterno because he was senile, be my guest.

  • to realize an ENTIRE ERA of their school history was fueled by an ambition to molest as the driving motivation to win. !! wtf!! uniMAGINABLE to be a die hard pn st fan!! FILTHY!! those poor buggers!!

think they knew?...were there chances?.....did they enable??

the Browns have been quite disappointing more often than not since they came back...but at least Browns fans have never had to endure ANYTHING close to the embarrassment they suffered. WOW...

    EF! that barnacle school. !

  • Here is the problem. He already tried to make the jump from top college coach to NFL coach and he failed. He went back for a few reasons. More control, easier scouting, better hours, and more money. Why would he jump back to the NFL, to coach for one of the worst teams in the NFL no less, when he knows he will be on a very hot seat performing a job he knows is harder and one that doesn't give him as much prestige.

Because of the professional challenge the NFL would present to him. To make up for his failure with the Dolphins. To show that he can take an NFL team to the highest heights as well as a college team.

He has already won 3 college football national championships. What more does he have to prove? Will any more trophies of that sort mean that much more to him?

Plus, unlike say a Paterno/Hayes/Schembechler/Bryant/even Urban Meyer and Jim Tressel, none of whom spent a day coaching in the NFL..Saban was weaned on the NFL. He was an assistant coach, a DC and HC.

It is the only challenge left to him as a football coach as far as I am concerned.

I am bored seeing him coach the college game. How can he not be bored.

He needs to see the gleam, man. There is no gleam like the one coming off the Lombardi Trophy.

  • No doubt Saban will be inducted into college football hall of fame after his impressive career in the college ranks.

His two years as head coach of the Dolphins, however, was mediocre at 15-17. His comfort level seemed a point

of conflict in the pro game as his integrity took a big hit in the manner he left the Dolphins for Tuscaloosa.

I sense he is another in the long line of college coaches unable to successfully transistion to the pro game.

Haslam may put him on the list but I really don't see a good fit with the Browns.

  • saban is a great coach BUT he hasn't been 'caught' yet. somewhere within all those SEC titles and the michigan state tenure has got to be some violation ready to peak it's nasty little head out the closet (why hasn't the NCAA been up the ass of the SEC like it has every other major conference....you gotta ask yourself that question first......homeboys in office?). and to think he'd have the guts to leave alabama to come here, i don't think so. besides would you want somebody here that would coach a year and then bolt to go to a better team/opportunity?

the dude is shady. just ask the dolphin fans.

IF shurmur does go i think haslem might just promote from within. maybe giving the job to jauron. you know, the steeler's way, the business way of doing things.

Yes, I agree. That 200K that Cam Newton's old man wanted for his kid to go to MSU was merely the going rate. Someday that bubble will bust. (That is why the trouble OSU got into over trinkets is so laughable).

On Jauron though...he is too old I think at this point unless they made him an interim coach.

If it is just absolutely clear that Shurmur is way in over his head....and he may be, a change could be made to an interim.

Dude, it's one thing to be jealous that we pound (sec that is) y'alls face in football, but it's entirely off base to incenuate that we are given some sort of treatment. Just about every sec school has been sanctioned in the last 15 or so years. I'm not saying our collective noses are clean, but we "cheat" for better players and are apparently better at it.

Just admit we are the better conference this decade and move on.

We? Who are we? There ain't no "we" in a conference. Conferences are for scheduling purposes only....not for rooting purposes.

Alabama can beat the fuck out of Michigan all day every day for all I care. I am an Ohio State fan. The rest of the Big Ten teams can get stompanadoed all day long.

Rooting for a conference is the dumbest ass thing I have ever heard.

Maybe you went to one of those schools, but you didn't attend the "conference".

You root for that school if you wish.

That is as stupid as saying "I am an AFC North fan". Do you see how fucking dumb that is? That would require you to root for the Steelers, Ravens, and Bengals.

Fuck them. And fuck all the other Big Ten schools. And if I were a fan of any SEC school I would say fuck the rest of the SEC. I mean, I went to Akron U. Should I root for the other MAC schools? No.

  • There is a we, as in WE, the sec, keep beating the hell out of everyone else. Be bitter or claim to not understand it, but if wisconsin pounded the hell out of bummer or auburn, y'all would get the chuckles, just like I do when the big 10 gets shitbricked by the sec (i won't even go into the mac).

And no, it's not the same as the pros, although I do get your point.

did you also get a big chuckle when the Steelers won their superbowls? They are in the same "conference" as the Browns you know ...

  • Holmgren was on air today saying pats his guy and they'll work through troubled seasons. Whether holmgren still has a job is the question. If he does pat does, I think.
