Five games in and we've already conceded that the Browns will have the #1 pick?

No. I really think the team will be a handful for every opponent they meet this season. But we do need the injured...and the suspended back on the field. You can't have a Haden/Taylor/Jackson/Patterson/Massaquoi/Benjamin/JMJ etc. etc. sitting on their asses.
The young team will get better and better....and several opposing teams will pay the piper for it.
The only questionable factor: the coach. He can lose games all by himself with no help from anyone.

I apologize. This got put on the wrong thread.

Weeden has what it takes to be an NFL qb. No way we pick another qb in the first round. Weeden has all the measurables but just needs experience. He's the least of our problems.

I agree wholeheartedly. And he is gaining invaluable inexperience. Weeden, with his rocket and a year experience in the NFL, is going to outperform any rookie that is drafted next year.
The record of QBs whose defenses give up 40 points in a game is 0-15 this year.
He flicks it from the 30 yard line and it lands softly in his hands at the 12 ... that 58 yards in the air folks. A guy like Colt McCoy would have to hire Federal Express to get the ball that far.
We've got a QB. And a brilliant RB. Start holding teams to 20 points per game and the wins will start falling into place.

I dont think it would be fair to put the blame on Weedon if we end up picking 1st. The bottom line is, if your defense gives up 41 points your not winning very many ballgames. Peyton, Brady Rodgers or whoever else you wanna throw in there wouldnt win with a defense that plays like ours did today.
San Fran would have won and Chicago would have tied.
6.25% of the teams in the NFL would have won/tied this week if their defense gave up 41 points.
If you blame this on Weeden, you are stupid. If you blame this on anyone other than injuries/coaching...you are stupid.

Why do you make so many excuses for Weeden? This dude is on pace to throw close to 30 INT's and less than 20 TD's. inb4"he'sarookie"
I mean, I understand sitting back and not judging him, but it's like you're sold on him based on the fact that he's a better option than our other QB's, which is stupid.
Weeden singlehandedly takes points off the board with his bad decision making. He did not play well enough for us to win, our defense didn't either but still. Maybe I'm too hard on Weeden, but you're obviously not judging him on his play..

Pretty standard for a rookie QB. Did you think we were getting Joe Montana in his prime?

What is stupid? That he shouldn't be judged...that we have better options...or that you made that comment? I vote for the latter.

He did not avoid the mistakes that could have been avoided, yes. But look at the positives after just 5 games into his career.
At first I was not sure about him, but his ability to throw the ball has impressed me. All he has to do now is to learn to avoid the mistakes....in other words, he needs experience. And he is getting it. Like I said before, I think the last half of this season this Browns team could be a nightmare for its opponents who have playoff aspirations.

I am judging him on his play. But I'm not stupid enough to sit there and place the blame on him. Age notwithstanding, Weeden is a rookie QB. He is going to make rookie mistakes, and I can accept that. What I can't accept is stupid playcalling, awful personnel decisions, and bad scheming from a supposed "head coach". That is why this team has failed to win a game, not because of Weeden.
You are a typical Cleveland fan, through and through. When the team performs badly, it's "lets get a new QB".
In other words, you're a goddamned moron.
Colt singlehandedly took points off the board but being afraid to make a decision. Quinn took points off the board by throwing an awful ball. Anderson took points off the board by not being able to throw a checkdown, dump or screen accurately.
I'd take the QB who makes bad decisions over any of those, because his decision making will change with experience. Weeden will be our franchise QB, no matter what you want or think will happen.
You're mad because a rookie threw a shit loft ball to Gordon when he was being pressured? Yes, he will get flustered. It will happen. But once the speed of the game slows down, he has all of the physical tools to be a very good QB.
Terry Bradshaw, 1st overall pick in the 1970 draft, threw 24 interceptions as a rookie, the second most ever at that time. He only threw six TD's on the entire season, had a rating of 30.4, and won 5 games. And this was all splitting snaps with Terry Hanratty.
Jim Zorn threw 12 touchdowns and 27 interceptions in his rookie year, completing only 45% of his passes and posting a 2-12 record.
Troy Aikman, 1st overall pick in the 1989 draft, threw 9 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in his rookie season, had a QB rating of 55.7 and went 0-11 as a starter and had some of the most embarrassing performances in NFL history.
Peyton Manning, 1st overall pick in the 1998 draft, threw 28 interceptons in his rookie season and composed a 3-13 record.
3 of those QB's were first overall picks in their respective drafts and performed just as bad, if not worse, than Weeden.
C'mon man.

I'm not a typical Browns fan, I'm just under the belief that Weeden is one of those terrible personnel decisions, most Browns fans actually like Weeden. He hasn't really had many positives against his shitload of negatives. I've told you many times I don't give a fuck about wins, we're a terrible team we might as well play that way. But Weeden continues to play terrible so I'm going to judge him on his play, not on what might happen if the game ever does slow down for him.
And the way today's league is dominated by the passing game you can't compare those stats to those 1st overall picks. And even if that did translate, they were at least young with time to get better. We should've never tried to fast-track a QB who is not NFL caliber yet and is one of the oldest players on our team. It's stupid, and you can compare Weeden to whoever you want, it doesn't fucking matter. He's a really, really bad QB and hasn't really gotten better and doesn't have the time to get better that the other QB's you mentioned had.
Terry Bradshaw as a rookie - 22
Peyton Manning as a rookie - 22
Jim Zorn - 23
Troy Aikman - 23
Go ahead and salivate at what could be, I'm gonna judge what I've seen so far. An old, bad-decision making QB who doesn't make easy throws consistently.
I don't know why you think you're so fucking smart, you're just this pompous asshole who thinks anyone that disagrees with you is somehow a lesser. All you do is post these condescending remarks.

You're right, those stats aren't comparable to today's game because back then they threw the ball 15-20 times a game max. So they should have twice as many INT's. Thanks for bringing that up.
If you're judging him on his play, we must be watching two different game tapes. With every post you make it sound like this guy couldn't even hold Joey Harrington's jock, when he's actually played decent. Not a world beater thus far, I'll admit. He's made mistakes. He's thrown costly interceptions, and has exhibited some poor decisions. But he's also shown why he was picked where he was picked. He has all the tools of being a very good QB, and if his only flaw is that he's making bad decisions in his rookie year...then I'll take it. Because soon the game slows down, whether or not you want to admit it.
So, yes, I will "salivate" over what could be, and you will continue to mistakenly judge what you've seen so far. I will continue to take my emotions and pride out of it when assessing a talent. I will do my research to back up any point or feeling I convey. And that's why, someday, I'll have a career in this business. And all you'll ever be is a fan.
I don't think I'm smart. I just know that I know more about this game than you do. I am sick and tired of losing, just like the rest of you. But what I'm even more sick and tired of is seeing every fan start calling for the backup QB by week 3.
If I come off as condescending, and you feel like a lesser...well, if the shoe fits...
-
Lol, cool story. One day you'll have a career in this business, write me a letter when you do. Do this research..Weeden is 1st in interceptions, last in QB rating, 29th in completion percentage..but I'll sit here content because you see something in him that NO ONE ELSE DOES..professionals included. He doesn't even have this plethora of tools that you say he does, he's big armed guy with a solid frame...what other tools does he have??? Lay them out please.
The reality is if you were being truly objective you'd at least be able to acknowledge that his production so far has made him the worst QB in the league this year. You're no professional scout, yet at least lol. His mechanics are still shaky, his terrible decision making has led to game losing interceptions in multiple games. His strength's were presented to us in the pre-draft process, saying that he is a very accurate passer, is very poised, and he understands route progression and separation..he hasn't even shown those consistently and his weaknesses are glaring at us. He's limited athletically, holds on to the ball too long, stares down his primary, and usually makes the wrong decision over the right one. He was a product of the quick-read offense at OSU like many other QB's who flop in the NFL.
I'm not calling for the backup, I haven't said Colt is the answer. I've just said that the Weeden pick has and will set us back. We had bigger needs than QB and Weeden won't be the answer either.
-
yeah. weeden was a wasted pick. like he was single-handedly going to take us to the promised land? GTFO. we had waaaayyy tooooo many holes to fill than pick another qb. although everyone thinks one way or the other on colt and his talent, at least he would have gotten us through the year with more (improved?) talent on the offense which would have shown us whether he's the guy or not.
yes weeden has the arm. but who gives a fuck when we were going to finish dead last in our division anyway? the FO should have been looking to fill the gaping holes and build depth behind proven starters and be looking ahead to the QBs coming out next year if colt had proven to be a dud.
like i said. a wasted pick.

If we're going to finish dead last in the division, why not groom the QB you picked as your franchise QB? Why waste time with a QB who you only want as a backup?
No QBs coming out in this draft will be better than Colt, and that's not saying much.

Did you not just say most fans like Weeden? So it would stand to reason that many people also see the same thing in him that I do. You've already contradicted yourself, not off to a strong start.
Professionals don't see the upside in Brandon Weeden?
Ron Jaworski- "This guy's going to be a player someday. He's not right now"
Mike Mayock- "This guy can make all the throws. People are concerned about his age at 28 years old, but you draft him because you expect him to compete this year."
Marshall Faulk- ”I like what I saw from Brandon Weeden. They, the Cleveland Browns, should feel good about his maturation and what he is doing in the offense…He’s finding and buying time for guys. I mean, he made some throws tonight that surprised me. He’s going to make mistakes, like that interception, but they’ve found their quarterback in Brandon Weeden, it’s just going to take some time.”
Mel Kiper- "For weeks we've seen Weeden as a great fit for the Browns at No. 37 overall. The problem is Weeden is the last QB in the draft after RG3 that most front office folks believe can start games early if called on. The Browns really want to find competition for Colt McCoy. If they don't get Weeden here, they risk losing him. They know they can still get a good player early in Round 2. I think you secure the QB here."
(By the way, that quote was from Mel Kiper's pre draft mock for Cleveland. Richardson at 4 and Weeden at 22. But taking Weeden that early was a dumb, rushed, wasted decision...right Mik?)
Michael Irving- ”Tell the Cleveland Browns fans, they’ve got something coming. They got Weeden, young Greg Little, young Trent Richardson. The nucleus of this young football team is about the same age. In a couple years, this will be a good football team, led by this young quarterback we saw tonight, Brandon Weeden. I guarantee you that.”
Deion Sanders- “Statistically, 25 for 52 is not good on stats. But watching the game, this guy Weeden really showed some promise. He threw one pick-six, but to keep the ball out of Ed Reed’s hand for an entire game, with 52 throws, that says a lot.”
John Clayton- "Weeden has a good arm and decent grasp of Pat Shurmur's offense. It helps him that Shurmur did a good job two years ago in St. Louis with Sam Bradford. But it's going to be a tough year for the Browns and Weeden because the receiving corps is so young."
John Clayton- "If the new ownership gives Weeden the chance to grow in Shurmur's offense, Weeden may be the quarterback this franchise has been seeking since it came back as an expansion team in 1999."
But, yeah, you're right...no "professionals" think Weeden will be any good.
I have acknowledged that his play has not been desirable multiple times. You're either too thick, too blind, or too proud to realize it.
Once again, the things that he hasn't shown consistently are the things that rookie QB's in the NFL struggle with. I'm not here to convince you of anything. You can choose to believe that Weeden is terrible his entire career here, I honestly couldn't care less. If you want Cam Newton/RG3 numbers...look elsewhere. This isn't Madden.

I don't need you to believe me. You're going to think Matt Barkley is the next best thing since sliced bread because you heard someone say it on ESPN.
Just as good as Mark Sanchez, John David Booty, and Matt Leinart.
-
or pick a guy from kansas state next year who has just as good an arm, more mobile and 6 years younger. someone just as good as weeden (probably a lot better).
is that too forward thinking for you?

Geno Smith has a higher ceiling than Weeden and is better right now.
Geno is likely going to be the 1st pick, and if we have the #1 overall we should spend it on him.

You can choose to believe that Weeden is terrible his entire career here, I honestly couldn't care less. If you want Cam Newton/RG3 numbers...look elsewhere. This isn't Madden.
The fact that you just went around the TNF roundtable says a lot.Did you not just say most fans like Weeden?

Mel Kiper is wrong about players all the time, why the fuck would you use him when his credibility is far from solid?
And Browns fans like Weeden for all the wrong reasons. They like him because he looks better than what we've had, he can throw for yards, he has a huge arm. And then they think Shurmur is the reason Weeden is struggling. We've seen a lot more of the bad than we have the good, he needs to get more consistent...soon. He has to show improvement before the season is over. I don't want Madden stats, I just don't want the worst QB in the league, which is what Weeden is right now. And I don't see how you can completely disregard his age when he's nowhere near far enough along as you'd like him to be. Last week in the beginning of the game, I was like 'wow he just made two really good throws.' The one to Cameron for the 1st down, and the bomb to Gordon...then he fell apart. I'm not 100% against Weeden, if he does well I will be happy, I want the Browns to be good. But so far Weeden hasn't done much to impress me. It's not because I'm stupid it's because I'm watching this game and I don't see a 1st round QB

or pick a guy from kansas state next year who has just as good an arm, more mobile and 6 years younger. someone just as good as weeden (probably a lot better).
is that too forward thinking for you?

You asked for a "professional's" point of view regarding Weeden, and that's what you got. What, just because they didn't agree with you, now they are considered not credible?
I didn't realize we drafted Weeden in order to impress you. I must have missed that note somewhere.
There's nothing left to say.
Weeden is tied for first in interceptions with Matt Cassel. You are right. He's ahead of the likes of Tony Romo, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jay Cutler, who all round out the top 5.
Weeden also has anywhere from 30-50 more attempts than the rest of those in the top 5. Drew Brees is 6th in interceptions, I guess the Saints should get rid of him.
It also has nothing to do with the fact that Cleveland receivers couldn't catch a cold. Greg Little leads the league with 5 drops already. Trent Richardson has 3
Those tied with Little in drops are:
Victor Cruz with 37 catches, 438 yards and 5 TDS.
Jimmy Graham with 25 catches, 252 yards and 3 TDS.
Jason Witten with 21 receptions, 188 yards and 1 TD.
Greg Little 11 receptions 151 yards and 1 TD.
When you have receivers that drop half as much as they catch, it's going to be tough for a rookie QB to find a rhythm.
If you throw away Weeden's rookie debut game against Philly, his numbers aren't bad.
292.5 yards per game. 59.9% completion percentage 5 TD's, 5 INT's and a rating of 81.2
In stats, outliers skew statistics. Weeden's first game was an outliers in every sense of the word.
And in regards to his age, if we get 7-9 years of a franchise QB, what's the difference?
